TEACHER OF DISCIPLINEThe goal St. Norbert had in mind in instituting his order was to uniteto the practices of piety and penance with the duties of the care ofsouls. Of both forms of religious life, the contemplative and theactive, Norbert was an exemplary model. He spent hours in prayer anda considerable amount of time ministering to the needs of others. Hispractice of penance was severe beyond expression. To these acts ofpersonal sanctification he joined the work of an apostolic life.Norbert’s mode of life at Prémontré gave the impression that he wasless the founder of an order than one wishful to bring the canonicalorder of life back to its primitive fervor. He urged that the shepherdsof souls should labor at their personal sanctification, thus securing forthemselves the esteem so necessary for the success of their labors, aswell as the fulfillment of the duties of their sacred ministry. He feltthat these goals could best be fulfilled by clerics living together incommon, under a common rule, and according to the evangelical vowsof poverty, chastity, and obedience.The rule of St. Augustineanswered admirably to Norbert’srequirements. In answer to theprayers of his brethren, St. Augustineappeared to him. Extendinghis right hand, he offered acopy of his rule and said:“I am Augustine, Bishop ofHippo, this is the rule I havewritten. If your brethren fightthe good fight under its guidance,they will be able to appearwithout fear at the tribunal ofdivine justice on the last day.”
