CANON REGULARPope Calixtus II recognized that Norbert could do much good by hisitinerant preaching but he considered that greater good would be doneby founding a religious order, whose members would inherit his apostolicspirit and zeal. In this order the active and contemplative lifecould be merged.Together Norbert and BishopBartholomew of Laon visitedseveral places in the diocese forthe purpose of selectingsuitable ground on which toerect a monastery. None of themhad any attraction for Norbertuntil they arrived at the valleyof Prémontré, which was situatedin the forest near Couey.In an open space stood a chapeldedicated to St. John theBaptist. Norbert expressed awish to spend the night there inprayer. The following morning,Norbert stated that not only wasit the place of God’s choice, butthat in a vision, he had seen abody of men clothed in white.After returning to Laon, Norbertspoke of his ideas, whichresulted in seven of hisfollowers offering themselvesas disciples. As soon as thenecessary arrangements weremade, Norbert and his followersreceived the white habit fromthe hands of the Bishop, whichtradition held was indicated toSt. Norbert in a vision by theVirgin Mary. This reception ofthe habit took place in the earlypart of 1120.Saint Norbert himself fostereddevotion to Mary in his disciplesand among other things wishedthem to consider the color oftheir habit an external mark oftheir internal piety.
