clinched another world 

championship title. 

The West Melton rider 

wrapped up the FIM Junior 

Enduro GP World Championships 

title, his second 

consecutive world enduro 

crown, in Portugal last week, a 

thrilling bookend to the FIM 

125cc Youth Enduro GP World 

Championships title he won 

last year. 

It has been a stellar season for 

Macdonald – he had also been 

home in New Zealand briefly

PEOPLE LIVING near a forested 

area in Darfield will be told by fire 

chiefs tomorrow how to get out if 

a blaze breaks out over summer. 

McHughs Forest Park has been 

identified by Fire and Emergency 

New Zealand as a potential hazard 

due to its close proximity to 

residential properties and businesses 

and the abundance of fuels 

which come from these. 

Darfield deputy chief fire officer 

Ken Muscroft said the Lake Ohau 

fire last month, which destroyed 

48 buildings and burnt through 

5040ha of land, underpinned why 

a meeting is necessary. 

“We haven’t had any [fires] 

there [the forest park] yet, that’s 

the main thing. We’re getting 

prepared in case. 

“I think if you look at Lake 

Ohau you get a good idea [why],” 

he said. 

He does not know if the forest, 

which he said is near a large number 

of houses, could experience 

a blaze like Lake Ohau but it is 

important people are prepared if 

the worst happens.

MORE PEOPLE have moved 

to the district from other parts 

of New Zealand than anywhere 

else in the country this year. 

Selwyn Business Group member 

and Harcourts Rolleston 

manager Richard Tait says good 

employment opportunities and 

affordable housing in the district 

may be reasons for this. 

Statistics New Zealand’s latest 

data on internal migration gain 

as of the end of June, shows 2100 

people have moved to the district 

this year. 

Tait said the district and 

Canterbury as a whole have 

bounced back from the impacts 

of Covid-19 faster than other 

parts of New Zealand, making it 

a desirable place to move to and 

work in. 

“In real estate, if you look at 

what you were doing and what 

you missed out on, we’ve recovered, 

eh. Most businesses, from 

what I can see, have recovered 

and now are moving forward, 

that would be a fair assessment 

but I can’t speak for everyone, 

that would just be within our 

[business] group.” 

He said some of the most 

common New Zealand locations 

people are moving to the 

district from are Auckland and 

Hamilton. 

“I think everyone’s had a look 

at their lives after Covid and 

thought well, you know what,

TOXIC ALGAE IN RIVER 

A health warning has been 

issued for Selwyn River after 

potentially toxic algae benthic 

cyanobacteria was found in 

the river at Glentunnel. People 

and animals, particularly dogs, 

should avoid the area of the river 

until the health warning has 

been lifted. There are also other 

access points along the river that 

may have benthic cyanobacteria 

present. People are advised to 

treat every area of low-flowing 

river cautiously. 

PLAN CONSULTATION 

Submissions for the proposed 

Selwyn District Plan close on 

December 11. When finalised, 

the proposed plan will set out 

the rules for what people can 

and can’t do in the district. Some 

of the topics people can give 

feedback on include what sort of 

building they want to see in the 

district, what kind of businesses 

can operate, how indigenous 

biodiversity and cultural and 

historical heritage are protected, 

and natural hazard risks and 

protection.

Championship decided 

in final enduro round

Macdonald was only back in 

the country at that time because 

of international chaos caused by 

Covid-19, but it meant he was 

able to race the full Kiwi series for 

the first time since 2017. 

The Sherco rider’s build-up for 

the 2020 world championships 

began immediately. 

“Once the borders reopened 

and racing rescheduled, 

I was on a plane and 

back to England. The 

team had a race bike 

in England and I 

was straight into the 

final British sprint 

championship rounds 

managing three of the 

four outright wins and 

taking the E2 British 

sprint title,” he said. 

“To change things up a 

bit and push the fitness, I took on 

the big boys Graeme Jarvis and 

Billy Bolt in the British extreme 

championship round, a bit of fun 

and I was happy to jump on the 

podium with them.” 

The 21-year-old has clearly 

followed in the wheel-tracks of 

such Kiwi enduro legends as 

Stefan Merriman, Chris Birch 

and Paul Whibley, packing up his 

helmet a boots and headed offshore 

to seek fame and fortune

This year was only his third 

season in Europe, but he had 

already set tongues wagging 

on his debut in the youth class

completed the top five for 2019. 

This year it was his own Sherco 

team-mate, French rider Théo 

Espinasse, who threatened 

him most, but Macdonald

High winds increase fire risk

cover the McHughs Forest Park 

fire plan. 

The plan was created by the 

district council, FENZ police 

and other organisations to 

protect people in case of a forest 

fire. 

The meeting will cover 

evacuation zones and what to do 

if a fire breaks out. 

The risk of fire in the forest 

is greatly increased during 

periods of high wind, 

particularly a strong nor’west 

that could blow embers from a 

fire into Darfield. 

Said Malvern Ward district 

councilor Jenny Gallagher: 

“We’ve got to prepare people 

if there is an event and that 

plantation goes up in flames, 

especially if it’s a nor’west wind, 

because there’s a lot of properties 

on the east side of that plantation 

that would be affected. 

“It’s just in my mind, the 

council are being very proactive 

and preparing people for events 

which, hopefully, will never 

happen.”

LINCOLN Convenience Store 

owners Holly and Murray have 

had two cars crash through their 

store in the last few years. 

It has come as a big relief for 

the couple that bollards have 

now been installed to protect 

their store and others in the 

Gerald St block of shops. 

The 10 bollards, which cost 

$8000, were jointly funded. 

The block of shops’ landlord 

John Giltrap put $4000 of his 

own money towards them 

and the other $4000 came 

from the Lincoln Community 

Committee’s discretionary 

response fund. 

Murray said the first crash 

happened about three years ago 

when a man in a four-wheeldrive 

hit the gutter outside of the 

store, got a fright and stepped 

on the accelerator instead of the 

break. 

No one was hurt but said Murray: 

“He buried his four-wheeldrive 

right up in the back of 

the shop. He could have wound 

down the window and we could 

have served him. 

“It made an absolute mess and 

it was scary,” he said

The second incident last year 

was when a car was left in gear 

and travelled forward through 

the shop’s entrance. The damage 

was not as bad this time but he 

said both crashes forced the store 

to close for a few days, leading to 

loss of income. 

Murray said it was lucky that 

no one in the shop was injured 

on both occasions and a relief 

that no one at the block of shops 

will be in future thanks to the 

bollards. 

“We’re just so pleased to have 

them because it’s dangerous for 

us. 

“It’s safety, of course, for us 

and people who work here and 

for our customers,” he said. 

Said Holly: “That’s a lot of 

relief. In both of the accidents, 

we were so lucky no one got 

hit.” 

Giltrap said he wasn’t willing 

to wait for another crash to happen 

and this is why he decided to 

help pay half of the cost for the 

bollards. 

“There’s been two near misses, 

it was time to put a protection 

in.”

ONE OF New Zealand’s 

best-known cricketers will be 

immortalised at the new Selwyn 

Sports Centre. 

The wooden floor sports 

hall – half of the court space 

at the centre at Foster Park – 

will be named the John F. Reid 

Courts. 

Reid played 19 tests and 25 

one-day internationals between 

1979 and 1986. He still holds 

the record as the fastest New 

Zealander to score 1000 runs in 

test cricket, set in 1985. 

His career test batting average 

of 46 ranks him amongst the top 

10 players in New Zealand test 

cricket history. 

After a stint as Auckland 

Cricket chief executive, he 

moved to Selwyn in 1996 

working for New Zealand 

Cricket as cricket operations 

manager and high performance 

manager. 

Through these roles he led the 

establishment of NZC’s national 

high performance centre at 

Lincoln University, which 

included the development of 

the international standard Bert 

Sutcliffe Oval. 

Reid has been the district 

council’s major projects 

property manager since 2015, 

overseeing some significant 

building projects. 

The four sprung wood courts 

in the hall are due to be laid 

in the next fortnight as the 

centre marks another milestone 

towards opening to the public in 

time for the 2021 winter sport 

season. 

Mayor Sam Broughton said 

the naming will acknowledge 

both Reid’s work as a champion 

for the courts and community 

sport in Selwyn, and his huge 

contribution to sport across the 

country.

in senior roles at Sport New 


Sports centre to honour cricketer 

RECOGNITION: Half of the court space at the Selwyn 

Sports Centre at Foster Park will be named the John F. 

Reid Courts, after the former New Zealand cricketer. 

Zealand (previously SPARC) 

supporting community 

sport delivery nationally 

and establishing a national 

programme to identify and 

develop talented young athletes. 

A champion of community 

sport, Reid was an inaugural 

trustee of the Selwyn Sports 

Trust and advocated to the 

district council on the need for a 

sport and recreation centre that 

prioritised use by community 

level providers within the 

district. 

“We’re lucky to have one 

of the country’s best sports 

administrators working with a 

passion for the people of Selwyn 

on projects that will serve the 

community for a long time,” 

said Broughton. 

“John has led the 

implementation phase of 

developing Foster Park and 

continues to provide the 

leadership to deliver the 

Selwyn Sports Centre, ensuring 

the district gains a facility 

that will serve the whole 

community.”

Drinking 

water meets 

standards 

THE DISTRICT’S drinking water 

has received a clean bill of health 

for complying with drinking 

water standards under the Health 

Act. 

This comes after last year 

about 3000 Doyleston and Leeston 

residents were issued a boil 

water notice after high levels of 

E coli were found in one towns’ 

water supply. 

Now, the district’s water supplies 

have been found to complying 

with national drinking water 

standards in all areas assessed in 

the Ministry of Health’s annual 

compliance report for 2019/20. 

The report, has been presented 

to the district council and shows 

nitrate levels are below the 

maximum allowable levels and 

that all the council’s supplies 

were fully compliant for bacteria 

in both the treatment plants and 

reticulation. 

The areas considered in the 

report included bacteriological, 

protozoa and chemical compliance. 

For protozoa compliance, eight 

schemes were not compliant for 

the full year. These were schemes 

that were being upgraded during 

the year or that will be upgraded 

in this financial year.

$20m allocated 

for new east 

Rolleston school 

A NEW primary school that 

will be built in east Rolleston 

has received $20 million in 

Government funding. 

It will accommodate 400 pupils. 

Education Minister Chris 

Hipkins announced this and 

other school building projects on 

Friday. 

They are part of a $164 million 

package announced on Thursday. 

Said Hipkins: “More and more 

families are choosing to move to 

Rolleston post the earthquakes. 

It’s one of the fastest growing 

areas in the country. 

“Five million [dollars] will 

also be used to fund short-term 

classrooms at schools in the 

South Island facing severe 

pressure from rapid roll growth,” 

he said. 

The funding will go towards a 

total of 28 classrooms in schools 

in Canterbury, Otago, Nelson 

and Tasman, with a total of 616 

student places. 

The other $7 million will 

deliver permanent roll growth 

classrooms at Prebbleton School, 

Waimea College in Nelson, St 

Martins School in Christchurch, 

and Grants Braes School in 

Dunedin. 

“Families rightly expect their 

children to be able to learn in 

warm, dry and comfortable,” said 

Hipkins. 


ABOUT 18 years ago Glenn 

Anderson left a corporate 

position with Nestle for a 

hands-on role as a supermarket 

manager. 

He and his wife Tracy Anderson 

haven’t looked back since 

and are now the new owners of 

New World in Rolleston. 

They started in their new role 

about five weeks ago. They have 

previously managed supermarkets 

in Nelson, Waimate and 

Christchurch. 

Glenn said some of the things 

that have kept him in the supermarket 

industry for so many 

years are the people he gets 

to serve and the teams he has 

worked with. 

“It’s your team that you really 

enjoy and your costumers as 

well. So it’s a combination of 

both of those.” 

Rolleston residents have been 

friendly and good to deal with. 

“It’s amazing how many of the 

customers have come up to me 

and introduced themselves. 

“It’s a really, really friendly, 

good community store,” he said. 

Tracy said taking over the 

ownership of the Rolleston store,

which employees about 200 people, 

will be a challenge but she is 

excited about it. 

“We were looking forward to 

the challenge of a bigger store 

so, for us, we’re obviously a 

husband and wife team so we 

complement each other quite 

nicely. 

“For us, it was a business challenge 

but also, it was a wee bit 

about coming back to our roots,” 

she said. 

There have been many memorable 

moments during Glenn’s 

time managing supermarkets 

but a few stand out. 

Said Glenn: “We had a nude 

man walking through the shop 

one time, so we had to try and 

get him under control a little bit.

Back in the sulky and winner’s circle

IT’S BEEN more than a decade 

since Jo Herbert saluted the 

judge, but her winning drive 

behind Blue Chip Delight at 

Motukarara Raceway on Sunday 

showed she hasn’t lost any of her 

talent. 

Blue Chip Delight made a solid 

start to sit midfield before Herbert 

asked him to improve threewide 

down the back straight 

to sit outside leader Eastwood 

Isabella. 

They hit the lead at the top of 

the straight and didn’t relinquish 

their advantage, holding out the 

fast-finishing The Kaik to win by 

a neck, with a further head back 

to Bettor Believe It in third. 

Herbert was delighted to get 

the win after such a long hiatus. 

“It felt really good, it’s been a 

long time between drinks,” she 

said. 

“I was pleased with the horse, 

he went well.” 

A pioneer for female drivers 

in New Zealand, Herbert won 

193 races in the cart before she 

was forced to step away from the 

game 10 years ago to look after 

her son Brooklyn. 

“At the time it was in the toohard 

basket, he wasn’t that well,” 

Herbert said. 

“It got too hard, so I just focused 

on him. He is 13 now so he 

is quite good at self-managing.”

Herbert returned to the industry 

last year after the urging 

of trainer Stephen Boyd and she 

landed her ideal job with current 

employers Colin and Julie De- 

Filippi, for whom she drove Blue 

Chip Delight on Sunday, earlier 

this year. 

“I was initially influenced by 

Stephen Boyd in getting me out 

there, that definitely helped,” 

Herbert said. 

“I now work for Colin and 

Julie, you couldn’t ask for nicer 

people. 

“When I was pregnant he 

ended up training my trotter. I 

kept working him right up until 

I was 30 weeks pregnant and 

then sent him to Colin. He has 

always been like my father in 

harness racing.” 

When Herbert heard the De- 

Filippi’s were looking for another 

worker, she said she was quick to 

get on the phone, even though 

she was on the other side of the 

world at the time. 

“When I heard he was looking 

for someone I was straight on 

the phone from Spain. We went 

over there for five weeks back in 

February,” she said. 

“We were quite lucky because 

two days after we got home 

Barcelona was in lockdown. We 

timed perfectly.” 

Herbert’s win on Sunday has 

brought her just six wins shy of 

200 driving career wins, a mark 

she would have tried to attain 10 

years ago had she known she was 

so close. 

“At the time when I stopped 

I hadn’t actually looked at that 

(career win tally),” Herbert said. 

“It was more that I had to do it 

(give up driving) because of my 

son. 

“If I had known back then that 

I was that close I wouldn’t have 

given it up quite so soon.” 

Herbert said DeFilippi has 

been trying to get her back in the 

cart for some time, but she has 

been happy working behind the 

scenes. 

“He has been trying to, but I 

have been quite happy just gearing 

up, it hasn’t fazed me,” she 

said. 

But with three horses in the 

field of the Country Feasts Pace 

(2170m) on Sunday, DeFilippi 

was able to twist Herbert’s arm 

into taking the drive behind 

Blue Chip Delight, and they were 

both rewarded. 

“It was great to get the win, but 

I am just happy to be working 

for him,” Herbert said.

RESIDENTS ARE urged to be 

smart with their water use this 

summer to avoid restrictions. 

District council infrastructure 

group manager Murray Washington 

said after a drier winter 

than usual, the National Institute 

of Water and Atmospheric 

Research is predicting a hot, dry 

summer. 

He said now is the time to get 

into good habits to ensure there 

is no need for restrictions. 

“Water supplies are often 

placed under pressure during 

summer as many people 

decide to water their lawns 

and gardens at the same time. 

So we’re encouraging people 

to think about their water use. 

If everyone plays their part 

we should be able to avoid 

restrictions and provide water 

at a good pressure all summer 

long,” he said. 

The district council is 

recommending people limit 

watering to after 9pm, to keep it 

away from peak usage times and 

ensure the sun doesn’t quickly 

evaporate the water, which will 

reduce the effectiveness of the 

water use. 

LIAM CUNNAH was the 

driving force behind social 

workers becoming a permanent 

part of the military. 

Now, the Glentunnel resident 

has been named New Zealand 

Defence Force civilian of the 

year. 

Cunnah provides professional 

clinical social work services to 

personnel at Burnham Military 

Camp as well as their family 

and, in his spare time, the wider 

Canterbury community. 

He was part of a trial to introduce 

social workers to the NZDF 

four years ago – a trial which led 

to them becoming permanent 

employees. Cunnah said the 

importance of providing this 

service to personnel could not be 

under-estimated. 

“We live in an ever-changing 

and unpredictable world which 

can place significant pressures 

on soldiers and their families. 

“As the types of issues become 

more complex in their presentation, 

a more holistic approach to 

wellness support and management 

is required, and this is 

where social work comes into its 

own,” he said.

social work service has been 

supported and enhanced by the 

exceptional work of my fellow 

colleagues within the Burnham 

integrated wellness team,” he 

said. 

Last year, Cunnah undertook 

postgraduate study in family 

therapy, as well as having studied 

Gottman couples therapy 

this year. 

“I chose to do this as it was a 

need that I identified around the 

ever-changing relationship challenges 

faced by soldiers and their 

dependents. 

“As social workers we are 

innately driven by our desire 

to promote and enhance the 

self-determination and empowerment 

of both our clients and 

often the wider organisations 

that we are employed by,” he 

said. 

Cunnah also supports the 

wider Canterbury community 

in his own time by providing 

clinical input as a board member 

for Salisbury Street Foundation, 

a rehabilitation centre that aims 

to reintegrate serious offenders 

back into the community. 

His citation said his dedication 

to the work he did within the 

community demonstrated he 

was an outstanding ambassador 

for the NZDF.

A CRICKET oval and new

COPPER WIRING has 

been targeted by thieves on 

construction sites in Rolleston. 

Senior Sergeant Dean Harker 

said over show weekend between 

1m and 2m of copper electricity 

wiring was taken from 16 properties. 

The houses targeted were in 

Ridgeway Ave, Wittington Drive 

and Chesney Drive. 

Harker said police believe the 

incidents were linked and were 

likely carried out by one person. 

He said copper wiring was also 

stolen in similar burglaries in 

Lincoln last year. 

“It [copper wiring] has a monetary 

value. The value of the wire 

itself is not overly large,” he said. 

He estimated the resale value of 

the amount of wiring stolen from 

each property is about $50 but 

said it costs much more to have it 

installed.

is that opportunity for people to 

actually target those sort of areas. 

With all that building it’s just an 

opportunity for dishonest people 

to steal stuff.” 

Harker recommended people 

building houses should install 

security cameras on construction 

sites. He said police are currently 

investigating if any footage was 

taken of the burglaries over the 

long weekend.

Surinder Tandon is a 

textile engineer with 

a passion for weaving 

together communities 

of all cultures and 

backgrounds. 

Originally from New 

Delhi, Tandon and his wife 

Archna moved to New 

Zealand in 1988. He had 

just completed his PhD 

in textile engineering and 

landed a job at the Wool 

Research Organisation of 

New Zealand in Lincoln. 

“They were doing a lot of 

interesting work in textile 

engineering and fabric 

product development,” he 

said. 

Combined with his love 

for cricket, he thought it 

offered was the perfect

the club’s CultureFest to 

life for Canterbury residents.

various ethnic groups can 

showcase their music, 

dance and food, he says.

A SERIES of drop-in 

sessions to support people 

into work, and employers 

with staffing needs, is 

kicking off across the 

district. 

Held at public libraries 

in Leeston, Lincoln, 

Rolleston and Darfield, 

employment zone clinics 

are sessions where people 

can access one-to-one 

support around job 

seeking, redundancy, staff 

retention and recruitment. 

The sessions, presented 

by Sarah Parker, work 

broker for the Ministry of 

Social Development, aim 

to provide more support 

for local communities, 

assisting people into sustainable 

employment, and 

providing a personal and 

quick service tailored to 

their needs. 

“Employment is still 

going strong in the community 

and businesses are 

really open to supports 

from MSD,’” said Parker. 

“By being on the ground 

in the community, I’m 

able to tailor services to 

the person or business 

on a one to one basis, 

assisting with their needs 

directly. We’ve received 

really positive feedback 

by people surprised when 

they discover the amount 

of supports which are 

available to businesses,” 

she said.

group” he formed with 

other Indian migrants in 

the early 1990s. 

Tandon’s passion for culture 

and community grew, 

and he went on to represent 

the Indian community 

on the Christchurch 

Multicultural Council, and 

has been its president for 

the last ten years. 

“I grew a lot of passion 

for serving ethnic communities,” 

he said. 

“Not just Indian communities, 

but all communities, 

including migrants 

and refugees.” 

Christchurch has over 

180 ethnicities and has 

become very diverse, he 

said. 

“I realised that the 

needs of all migrants are 

the same for settlement, 

such as culture, language 

barriers, employment 

challenges and 

homesickness, of course.”

employers and job seekers 

are fully aware of the funding 

and services currently 

on offer to support them. 

“The drop-in sessions 

provide an opportunity 

for people to meet with us 

to discuss their needs, and

Sporting champion to be honoured 

at Selwyn Sports Centre 

One of New Zealand’s leading sportsmen and sporting administrators will be recognised at the 

Selwyn Sports Centre. 

The wooden floor sports hall at the Selwyn Sports Centre at Foster Park will be named the John F. 

Reid Courts. 

The four sprung wood courts in the hall are due to be laid in the next fortnight as the centre marks 

another milestone towards opening to the public in time for the 2021 winter sport season. 

Mayor Sam Broughton says the naming will acknowledge Mr Reid’s work as a champion for the 

courts and community sport in Selwyn, and his huge contribution to sport across the country. 

Originally from Auckland, Mr Reid represented New Zealand at cricket in 19 Test Matches and 25 

One Day Internationals. He holds the record as the fastest New Zealander to score 1000 runs in 

test cricket, and his career test batting average is among the top 10 players in New Zealand’s test 

cricket history. 

He went on to be Chief Executive for Auckland Cricket before moving to Selwyn in 1996 to be 

New Zealand Cricket’s High Performance Manager and Operations Manager. 

In these roles he led the establishment of the Cricket National High Performance Centre at Lincoln 

University, including the development of an international standard playing facility – the Bert 

Sutcliffe Oval. 

Mr Reid spent nine years in senior roles at Sport New Zealand (previously SPARC), supporting 

community sport delivery nationally and establishing a national programme to identify and 

develop talented young athletes. 

A champion of community sport, Mr Reid was an inaugural trustee of the Selwyn Sports Trust 

and advocated to the Selwyn District Council on the need for a sport and recreation centre that 

prioritised use by community level providers within the district. 

Mr Reid has been the Council’s Major Projects Property Manager since 2015, overseeing some 

significant building projects, Council Group Manager Property Douglas Marshall says. 

“We’re lucky to have one of the country’s best sports administrators working with a passion for 

the people of Selwyn on projects that will serve the community for a long time. John has led 

the implementation phase of developing Foster Park and continues to provide the leadership to 

deliver the Selwyn Sports Centre.” 

Council and Lincoln University supporting 

businesses from the land 

Lincoln University’s Centre of Excellence and the Council have teamed up to put on a special event 

supporting Selwyn’s food, wine and agritourism businesses. 

Food producers, artisans, cafés and restaurants are all invited to the event at Lincoln University from 

4–6pm on Wednesday 2 December, which will see researchers from the university present on ideas to help 

build capacity and upskill, along with opportunities to grow and strengthen networks between businesses. 

The event will include presentations on research from members of Lincoln University’s Centre of 

Excellence – Sustainable Tourism for Regions, Landscapes and People, including ‘Identifying and 

communicating Selwyn’s food story’ and ‘Getting local produce on local menus’. 

It will also double as an opportunity for people to meet and connect with other similar businesses. The 

aim is to help build a network of food and beverage businesses, Council Group Manager Community 

Services and Facilities Denise Kidd says. 

“We know agriculture and agritourism are a huge part of Selwyn’s economy and we have some great 

innovative and quality produce here. By getting those businesses together with restaurants, cafés and 

others we’re hoping to encourage people to work together and take advantage of the opportunities we 

have from the land.”

The Proposed District Plan – 

considering starting a new 

home business? 

The Proposed District Plan includes some new proposed rules that may 

affect people starting a new business from home. 

Under the proposed plan running a business from home continues 

to be a permitted activity in both rural and residential areas, but 

some rules around when you may need a resource consent are 

proposed to change. 

The main change is around the size your business premises can 

be before you need to apply for a resource consent. New home 

businesses will not need a resource consent if there are no more 

than two staff who live off-site and the maximum floor area used for 

the business is under 100m 2 in a rural zone, or 40m 2 if you’re in a 

residential zone. 

In residentially-zoned areas, the proposed rules would mean 

business activity involving customer visits and/or deliveries, could 

only occur between 7.30am–7pm and all business goods would 

need to be stored indoors. In the current District Plan business 

activity involving visits by customers and clients, is limited to 

between 7am–10pm on any day. 

In rurally-zoned areas, business activity involving customer visits and/ 

or deliveries, could occur between 7am–7pm. In the current District 

Plan there are no limits on hours of the operation in the Rural Zone. 

The changes being proposed are aimed at ensuring that home 

businesses don’t potentially adversely affect the look and feel of 

residential or rural areas. The changes are also aimed at striking a 

better balance between making it easy to set up a home business 

and encouraging bigger businesses to locate in the district’s 

commercial and business centres. 

It is important to note that these changes would only apply to those 

starting a new home business and will not have effect until the 

proposed plan is operational, which is expected to happen by the 

end of 2022. If you currently run a business from home, you will not 

be affected by the proposed change of rules.

It might not sound it at first, but the Selwyn Youth Council is a life-changing opportunity, Youth Council 

member Inaki Cepeda says. 

Applications for the 2021/22 Selwyn Youth Council are open for young people between 12 and 24 years 

of age who live in Selwyn. 

The Youth Council is made up of 12 members who are passionate about making a positive difference 

for young people in Selwyn. 

Inaki, who is part of this year’s Youth Council, says he did not know a lot about the Youth Council when 

a member first suggested to him that he should apply, but he was glad that he did. 

“It has been a really cool, life-changing experience. I’ve had so much fun, met so many people from 

different townships, made so many friends and learnt new life skills. Everyone should try it. It may not 

sound cool from an ad or an article, but it’s such a cool experience.” 

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic restricting some of the things the Youth Council could do this year there 

have still been lots of highlights, such as helping out with BOOST Bubble, posting encouragement and 

activities to support young people during the lockdown – posts which reached close to 24,000 accounts. 

Inaki has also helped with the Youth Council’s Passion Podcast series, interviewing Selwyn residents 

about their passions and with a BOOST Halloween event supporting the Burnham Military Camp family 

Halloween party. 

Youth Council members have also presented to 

Council on issues affecting youth, and hosted 

the ‘What do YOUth think’ surveys which 

this year gave young people in Selwyn the 

opportunity to help design the youth space for 

the Rolleston Town Centre. 

Mayor Sam Broughton says the Youth Council 

makes a valuable difference. “The Youth Council 

has been an active part of making Selwyn a 

great place to live. Anyone who wants to be 

part of that and help make cool things happen 

and support other young people should put 

their name forward for consideration.”

Exhibition showcases 

district’s artists

Arts Heart Exhibition 

sprung to life earlier this 

month at the Rolleston 

Community Centre. 

It was attended by 280 

people who visited from all 

over Selwyn and Canterbury. 

On display were 250 

pieces of art made by artists 

from the district. 

The exhibition – supported 

by the district council’s 

Creative Communities 

Fund – was open to artists 

of any style and age. 

It has hosted Canterbury 

artist Henry Turner’s art 

since he was 12, musical 

instruments made out of 

cake tins and the Selwyn 

Embroiderer’s group.

next year, Selwyn Arts 

Heart chairwoman Wendy 

Rockhouse said she will 

apply for the creative communities 

fund again to 

help cover the venue hire 

and advertising expenses, 

as she does every year. 

“Without their funding, 

we couldn’t run an exhibition.

money making exhibitions, 

they’re held to give emerging 

artists the opportunity 

to participate in an exhibition,”

A DELICATE little 

moth endemic to Japan 

is the azalea leaf miner 

(Caloptilia azaleella). 

Found almost worldwide 

where its azalea host 

is found, this brown 

and yellow moth has a 

wingspan of 10-13mm.

Look out for 

Metro changes 

Next week, Metro passengers will see 

some timetable changes and different buses 

on some routes. 

New public transport contracts coming 

into effect on Sunday 29 November bring 

with them a host of benefits. Passengers in 

the western and eastern suburbs will enjoy 

increased frequency on Route 3 (previously 

the Purple Line), while new electric and low 

emission vehicles are gradually coming into 

service across the network in the coming 

months. 

Buses may look different 

The change in contracts sees many 

services change to a different operator. The 

consequence for passengers is that different 

buses will be used on many routes from 

Sunday 29 November. 

If you are used to seeing a Red Bus 

branded vehicle on your route, it may now 

be a Go Bus branded vehicle instead, and 

vice versa. Your bus might also be in the new 

teal livery as it continues to roll out across 

the network.

Environment Canterbury senior manager 

public transport Stewart Gibbon says this 

is the second of three stages of timetable 

changes. 

“We’ve phased the changes to reduce the 

impact on our customers,” says Gibbon. 

“The majority of changes being made this 

month are necessary to implement the new 

operator contracts and to ensure compliance 

with changes to the Employment Relations 

Act.” 

Gibbon advises passengers to check now if 

their timetable or operator is changing on 29 

November, and plan ahead. 

“Our Journey Planner tool allows you to 

forward plan – you can plan your trip for 29 

November onwards to see if the timetable 

changes impact your usual journey,” he says.

SELWYN NETBALL Centre 

has agreed to split their Saturday 

competition between the existing 

headquarters at Lincoln and the 

new Selwyn Sports Centre in 

Rolleston. 

After lengthy discussions between 

clubs and the district council, Selwyn 

Netball Centre president Andrea 

James confirmed they would utilise 

the $22 million indoor facility at Foster 

Park, which is due to be opened 

next April. 

Some players had reservations, 

from a social perspective, about 

grades not being held throughout 

Saturday. 

“A lot of people go down there 

for the whole day, coach different 

teams, watch their children, maybe 

umpire . . . that would be gone if 

they all go indoors at different times 

on different days,” Selwyn netball 

stalwart Lyn Miles said. 

“They (the council) couldn’t give 

any one sport a whole day.” 

James outlined the rationale for 

playing the Saturday competition 

between two venues, although the 

detail on how it would be run is still 

being finalised. 

“This should result in more teams 

being able to experience games 

indoors and a shorter playing day,” 

she said. 

The year one to year four 

programme is confirmed for the 

new centre.

This can be indicative of the 

final selling price when a retailer 

buys a few bottles or a case; however, 

lower-priced offerings are 

often purchased on promotional 

deals. 

Buying five cases, a layer (14 

cases), a half pallet (28 cases), a 

pallet (56 cases) and so on will 

make a significant impact on the 

cost price. 

Consequently, I’ve seen all the

Try adding fruit to your main course 

PRODUCE CAN sweeten your 

traditional creations and add an 

element of surprise. 

Stone fruit or berries are not 

normal ingredients you would 

add to a main course but try these 

easy recipes using blueberries and 

peaches for a tasty change. 

Blueberry, Chicken and 

Mustard Pasta 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

500g skinned and boned chicken 

breasts 

salt and pepper to taste 

2 tbsp olive oil 

1½ cups pasta of your choice 

1 small onion, diced 

1 cup blueberries 

Dressing: 250g creme fraiche or 

light sour cream 

1-2 tbsp Dijon-style mustard 

2 tbsp milk, lemon juice 

Directions 

If the chicken breasts are large, 

cut in half lengthwise. Season. 

Heat half the oil in a frying pan. 

Saute until lightly coloured. 

Cover and cook for 12-15min, 

turning occasionally. Remove 

and cool slightly. 

Meanwhile, cook the pasta 

according to the packet instructions. 

Saute the onion in the remaining 

oil, until softened. Combine 

ingredients for dressing. 

Place blueberries in a large 

bowl. 

Using two forks, flake the 

chicken. Place in the bowl with 

the blueberries. Add the drained 

pasta and onions. Gently toss. 

Stir in the dressing. Serve warm 

or at room temperature. Great 

garnished with fresh herbs. 

Corn, Coconut and 

Coriander fritters with 

Peach Salsa 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

Fritters: 

2 cups whole kernel corn 

2 eggs, separated 

½ cup coconut milk 

½ cup coriander leaves, finely 

chopped 

salt and pepper to taste 

3 tbsp self-rising flour 

1-2 tbsp rice bran oil 

Peach Salsa: 

2 ripe peaches, halved, stoned, 

peeled and thinly sliced 

1 tbsp lemon juice 

2 tbsp finely chopped rocket 

pinch sugar 

½ tsp chilli paste 

Directions 

FLAVOURS: 

(Left) – Pasta 

with mustard 

and blueberries. 

(Above) – Corn 

fritters with 

peach salsa. 

Blanch and drain the corn. 

Cool. Combine with the egg 

yolks, coconut milk, coriander, 

salt, pepper and flour. 

Heat the oil in a large nonstick 

frying pan. Take heaped tablespoons 

of the corn mixture and 

place in the pan. You will need to 

work in batches. 

Cook on low heat until bubbles 

appear on the top. Flip over 

and continue cooking until the 

undersides are golden. Keep 

warm in the oven while cooking 

the remainder. You should have 

12 fritters. 

Meanwhile, combine the ingredients 

for the salsa. 

To serve, place one fritter in 

the centre of each of four serving 

plates. Top with a little salsa. Top 

with another fritter, more salsa 

and a final fritter. You will have 

four stacks. 

Great drizzled with a sweet 

chilli sauce.

Contributors are Christchurch women Lorelei Jenner and Jenny Wilson and local 

Jane Downes. Jasmine Keir’s studio is in Keri Keri and Debra Powell is from the 

rural Waikato hamlet of Te Pahu. 

Lorelei Jenner paintings are somewhere between abstract and landscape. The 

images can be both familiar and interpretive, while at the same time mysterious, 

atmospheric and other worldly. 

Debra Powell’s alias in the pottery studio is ‘Little Betty’, her ceramic work has 

strong narrative themes, exploring relationships between people and nature, 

playing with convention and infusing the result with a gentle humour. 

Oxidised copper artist Jasmine Keir endeavours to create and understand the 

pure alchemy of the colours achievable using a vast variety of natural ingredients 

to react and colour her copper panels. 

Jenny Wilson has recreated a series of white porcelain moths these light 

mysterious creatures are pinned in reference to museum specimens; others rest 

on circles – an ancient Chinese symbol of the cycles of life, and of the cosmos. 

Jane Downes’ delicate themes are fabricated in steel. “A joyful look at the 

symbiotic relationship between bees and flowers and an observation of nature’s 

sacred geometry and spontaneity.”

MY PRIDE AND JOY 

Vintage cars at Hororata 

The annual Hororata Highland Games 

had a new attraction this year with the 

addition of a selection of vintage cars on 

display led by two rare vintage Scottish cars 

in keeping with the Scottish theme of the 

event. 

“We got a couple of the oldest cars in the 

country. It’s an important part of the early 

fabric of early motoring in New Zealand, 

and these cars played a large part in the 

development of the country as well,” said 

rally organiser, Malcolm McGibbon, from 

the Canterbury branch of the Vintage Car 

Club. 

The Bonnie May of Argyll hales from 

Alexandria in Scotland. Owned by Tom 

and Jenny Stephens from Rolleston the 

car was rebuilt from the remains of two 

cars that Tom sourced from Drummond 

in Southland in 1965 and Wigram in 

Christchurch in 1971. 

Of his first purchase, Tom said: “The 

mechanicals were completely dismantled 

and scattered around the farm. The chassis, 

wheels and axles had been used as a farm 

trailer around the farm for many years. The 

wheels had steel bands welded to the rims 

but time had taken its toll and only the hubs 

were usable. We recovered an immaculate 

brass petrol tank and gearbox and engine 

completely stripped with many parts 

missing. There was no steering or radiator.” 

Once in possession of sufficient original 

parts, Tom restored the 1905 Argyll with 

the help of friends over a period of 10 years 

adding radiators and other parts to his 

collection from a clearance sale in the 1980s. 

The Argyll has travelled 5,000 miles since its 

first rally in 1987. 

The Bennetts Family’s 1912 Albian was 

also at the show. “1912 was the last year that 

the Glasgow-based Albian Motor Company 

made vehicles, before specializing in 

gearboxes. They were very popular during 

World War 1 as they were relatively simple 

to fix,” said owner, Don Bennetts from 

Christchurch. 

This particular Albian was owned by 

beer and spirit merchants. It was then lost 

for a while and turned up at a car sale yard 

just before World War 1. Apparently, it was 

traded in for a bike, which the person used 

to ride to Burnham to join the army. 

Don says a market gardener in Governors 

Bay bought the car and used it to take fruit 

and vegetables to market. At some point the 

car got away on the hill and crashed, ending 

up in two pieces. The front half was used as 

a saw bench and the back half as a trailer. 

Members of Don’s family gathered up 

the bits and started to restore it, and luckily 

managing to find the missing radiator. By 

1957 it was back on the road and has been 

in the Bennetts family ever since.

Toyota Hilux helps home renovation 

WE’VE BEEN busy at the Kiddie 

household. 

There’s new timber on the 

house, new windows are going in, 

there’s fresh paint, and in readiness 

for a the painters to give the 

fences a tidy-up I’ve had to trim 

back a succession of shrubs and 

small trees. 

That on top of some landscaping 

work I needed to do after a 

drain was repaired. Throughout 

all of these enhancements I’ve put 

two new Toyota Hiluxes to good 

use. I took the foliage to green 

waste processing, building debris 

to the transfer station, and I’ve 

also been to the garden centre to 

uplift two loads of pebbles to finish 

the landscaping. 

That’s the versatility today’s 

double cab pick-up/utility offers, 

it is the quintessential vehicle for 

the everyday role, yet doubles as 

a versatile carry-all when tasks 

need to be completed, not to 

mention it’s towing ability and 

payload capacity – 3500kg and 

around one-tonne respectively. 

This evaluation focuses on 

the SR specification Hilux, I had 

two double cab variants in a 

row – one a cab-chassis with an 

aluminium flat deck, the other 

was a standard wellside. 

Toyota has done considerable 

work on the Hilux, there’s been 

an extensive change of look, it is 

bolder and more aggressive on 

the outside, while major interior 

changes incorporate new display 

graphics and the addition of a 

larger touch screen in the centre 

of the dashboard proper. 

Mechanically, the mainstream 

turbo diesel engine has had a big 

boost in power, thanks to a larger 

turbocharger. Toyota now claims 

150kW and 500Nm a 15 per cent 

increase for power and 11 per 

cent increase in torque. 

Of course, you can still buy the 

Hilux with petrol power if you so 

wish, but that option is limited 

to two entry-point Workmate 

models, both with just twowheel-drive. 

The other 16 variants are all 

diesel-powered, but you do have 

the choice of manual transmission 

in some of those, along with 

just 2WD options. 

Both variants I drove were 

four-wheel-drive capable and 

fitted with a six-speed automatic 

gearbox. 

While the Hilux is destined for 

a working role, what Toyota have 

done on the inside is to keep it 

family-friendly, there are all the

features and there is as much 

comfort as you can expect for 

something built over a ladder 

chassis and load-bearing suspension. 

There are many car-like features 

fitted to the Hilux and, of course, 

the Toyota suite of SafetySense 

technologies contribute to a 

five-star Australasian New Car 

Assessment Program rating. 

I can also safely say the new Hilux 

is smoother, while the power 

is boosted remarkably, it hasn’t 

lost its finesse, the engine throbs 

away in typical diesel fashion, 

but it isn’t loud and doesn’t seem 

stressed when building towards 

the top part of the rev band. 

Interaction between the engine 

and gearbox is fluid, shifts are 

clean and smooth. Drive, of 

course, is normally channelled 

rearwards, electric switching will 

engage the front axles in both low 

and high ratio depending on the 

driver’s preference. 

It must also be mentioned 

that the SR Hilux gets all of the 

four-wheel-drive trickery that is 

demanded in the working role. I 

only used it for a short evaluation 

purpose, and there are no surprises 

there, even without deeptreaded 

tyres the Hilux ute will 

scale humps and mounds without 

fear of getting stuck nor becoming 

grounded thanks to 286mm 

of clearance underneath. 

On that subject little has 

changed in terms of suspension,

the rear axle is still located by leaf 

springs, while a civilised independent 

wishbone system is fitted 

up front. 

My loads didn’t measure up to 

anything that would challenge 

the payload rating of the two 

utes, but I can report both laden 

and unladen the ride is perfectly 

acceptable, so for those who 

need to travel long distances 

recreationally it’s good to know 

the family will be well looked 

after, even those seated in the 

back will find there is satisfactory 

rake on the seats. 

I took both SR variants on a 

high country run through the 

Malvern Hills, with the boost in 

engine outputs the Hilux feels 

free and doesn’t require much 

energy from the driver to keep 

relaxed motion, and if you need 

that mid-range boost for a highway 

overtake, it fairly scampers 

when the accelerator is given a 

nudge. 

Toyota also claims an 11 per 

cent decrease in fuel usage, the 

Hilux in SR form is rated with 

a combined cycle average of 

7.9-litres per 100km. At 100km/h 

the engine isloping over at just 

1800rpm, returning a 7l/100km 

instantaneous figure, resulting in 

around 9l/100km for both models 

when I took them back to the 

dealership. 

One of the most notable 

features about SR specification is 

that it arrives with steel wheels. 

This is something Toyota has 

done with Hilux for a few years 

now, if you want alloy wheels 

you’d need to upgrade. I’m a big 

believer in steel, they are stronger 

and lighter and don’t detract 

much from the aggressive look 

of the new model. However, it is 

something buyers might consider. 

I’m due to drive two SR5 

variants soon, and that is the high 

grade specification rounding out 

the series at $58,990. If SR-only 

form is preferable you’ll save 

around $9000, and with the cabchassis 

model listing at $48,490 

there are a wealth of considerations. 

It’s always been that way 

with Hilux, there is a ute for 

every purpose and that’s why 

it’s so popular, there are choices 

that easily fill the working or 

recreational role.

Demand for properties in Canterbury 

is currently very strong although, the 

number of listed properties for sale 

is significantly below what we would 

normally expect leading into summer. 

After several years of steady but slowish 

growth, Canterbury real estate may now 

be in catch-up mode, as low interest rates 

and returning Kiwis spur on a market 

seen to offer some of the best value and 

lifestyle opportunities in New Zealand.

James Twiss says sales have been “really 

strong” in the past few months with 

demand from expats, investors in the 

North Island, first-home buyers and locals 

looking to upgrade or change pace. 

“It’s very much a correction or catch-up 

on what has been a steady yet cautious 

market over the last two to three years,” 

James says. “Time will tell if it’s a boom 

or not. However, there are several factors 

that suggest more gains could be on the 

way.” These include the new motorway 

systems north and south of Christchurch, 

which are opening up a much larger area 

to commuting and convenient lifestyle 

living, and swathes of new housing, 

which are creating modern, desirable 

communities that in turn generate 

further interest. Nearby beaches, forests, 

mountains and ski fields add to the 

appeal. 

James also states that even before 

low interest rates are considered, buyer 

confidence has been supported by good 

affordability compared to other parts of 

the country, a growing population and the 

peace of mind of post-quake builds. 

“The Selwyn and Waimakariri Districts 

have always offered good, secure real 

estate. We’re seeing the region continue 

to develop and offer more to its residents, 

and with that some really exciting and 

valuable opportunities.” 

Canterbury is expanding

The Southern Motorway extension 

streamlines the trip between Rolleston 

and Christchurch, while the Northern 

Corridor lessens the distance from 

Christchurch to Kaiapoi and Rangiora. 

“The access to jobs makes these areas 

extremely good value. New developments 

are being snapped up and there are 

numerous subdivisions being worked 

on throughout the area,” James says. “As 

developments bring the city closer, the 

stage is being set for ongoing growth in 

popular lifestyle areas and new, familyfriendly 

neighbourhoods.” 

Support for lending 

Interest rates have been reduced to 

record lows and aren’t expected to rise for 

years. Meanwhile, Loan to Value Ratio 

(LVR) restrictions have been dropped 

from 80 per cent to 70 per cent. 

Mortgage payments are now often lower 

than rents. This bodes well for investors. 

For people who are ready to buy, the 

Reserve Bank of New Zealand is ready to 

help. 

There is also an anticipated funding 

boost in the pipeline as homeowners with 

fixed interest rates see their terms expire 

in the next couple of years and move to a 

lower interest rate, freeing up a significant 

chunk of money they can potentially 

reinvest. As James indicated, this is one 

factor that counts against waiting.

Picture this: against a backdrop of the Southern 

Alps, surrounded by the rural farmlands of Lincoln, 

your architecturally designed dream home can 

sit on solid, fertile land that’s perfect for leading a 

self-sufficient life. Verdeco Park is a community-inwaiting, 

ready for anyone who wants lifestyle block 

without the commitment of 15-20 acres. 

What’s the big deal? 

It’s not just about living the dream. Families are 

looking for space to custom-build their ideal lifestyle, 

and many are doing it with help. Janelle Pritchard, 

Marketing Manager for Verdeco Park, says: “There 

are plenty of multi-generational homes going in. In 

some cases, older parents are helping young families 

to fund the build and then living in a second flat on 

the property. They then have company as they grow 

older. The bonus here, is that changes earmarked in 

the Selwyn District Council plan mean these flats can 

soon be rented out, creating a revenue stream for the

85% of buyers in Verdeco Park are from the Selwyn 

area, and are usually those who are onto their 3rd or 

4th homes. There are also some overseas returnees,

What to look out for 

Whether you’re using a home build company on 

a smaller lifestyle section or using an architect and 

private builder for your custom dream home, there 

are things you still need to consider. Most important 

are the services available to your boundary—power, 

water, and waste. Lifestyle blocks typically have a 

longer distance from house to boundary as well, so 

you may need to budget for eco pumps to remove 

your waste. In Verdeco Park, you’ll also get broadband 

whereas other developments might only offer the 

copper network. If you’re making the jump, you’ll 

already have a good idea of what you want, just 

make sure you check what’s already there and what 

you still need. And be sure to keep adequate budget 

for landscaping—there will likely be rules around 

completion that you need to follow—and adhere to 

fencing requirements. And if you’re just not sure how 

to go about it all, using a building broker like My
