ECENTER MAKERSPACE SUPPORTS 3DPRINTING FACE SHIELD INITIATIVEWhen the UNH campus shut down in March, theECenter didn't expect to turn our Makerspace's 3Dprinters on for the rest of the semester, but whenthe Portsmouth Naval Shipyard asked UNH to help3D print head bands for full face shields for localmedical professionals, we jumped at the chanceto help. We fired up three of our 3D printers, plusa personal 3D printer and got to work, printingnearly constantly for weeks.The ECenter is part of a team of departments fromall around UNH contributing to this effort with3D printing. The head bands (pictured above onthe left) are collected by the Shipyard, cleaned,assembled, and distributed to health care facilitiesaround New England. In addition to the headbands, we've been printing "ear savers," picturedabove on the right. Ear savers connect to theelastic bands that usually go around the ears withsome face masks. Instead of bothering the earswith constant wearing, the ear savers take thepressure off the elastic and fit around the back ofthe head.working as long as they're needed to help ourhealthcare workers who are giving so much to helpthe rest of us," said Heather MacNeill, MakerspaceAdvisor and project manager.The project started winding down in late summer,but since mid-March, the ECenter has contributedover 500 headbands and over 1100 ear savers.The printing efforts were made possible bythe Patten Family Foundation, which funds theMakerspace's equipment and materials, such asthe PLA used for 3D printing.
