Pat Lam wants to see a repeat dose of physicality 

when his side welcome Northampton Saints to 

Ashton Gate on Friday night (7.45pm KO, live on BT 

Sport 1 HD).

The Director of Rugby praised his side for fronting up in the 

round two bonus-point victory over Worcester Warriors and 

insists more of the same is required against Saints. 

“It was a good win (against Worcester). We’ve recognised the 

good stuff we did, and we’ve also seen the things we could have 

done better, but ultimately, we were very physical, and we got 

stuck in and came home strong. 

“We started well, came home strong, got the five points, job 

done. We move on now and it’s another short turnaround, 

another six-day turnaround, and a lot of the focus off the field 

has been around getting detail and making sure we’ve got our 

clarity right and ensuring that we’ve got a full tank, ready for 

Saints at home again on Friday night. 

“Northampton are a dangerous team, however it’s all about 

making sure that we control the ball, and when we don’t have 

the ball, ensure that our physicality levels are up with the last 

two games, if not better, to ensure we put as much pressure as 

we can on their attacking game, because it’s dangerous if we 

allow them to play.” 

“This week is all about recovery and getting detail right, so a lot 

of time in the barn, a lot of important meetings to make sure 

that we build on what we did last week, improve and be good to 

go on Friday.”

Joe Joyce says the Bears will have to be at their 

best when they take on Northampton Saints at 

Ashton Gate on Friday night.

Pat Lam’s side head into round three off the back of a bonuspoint 

victory over Worcester Warriors, but Joyce says they’ll 

need to raise their game again this time out. 

“Saints are a dangerous side, if they get into their attacking 

game and into their flow, we know they can hurt us,” said Joyce. 

“It’s about us trying to put pressure on them with team defence, 

and we’ve had a real focus, at the end of last season and the 

start of this season, on making sure we start well. So, we need to 

do that this weekend and deliver an 80-minute performance. 

“We need to be on the same physical level as we have been in 

the past two weeks, but we know we’ll need to raise our level 

again this week. 

“We did some really good things against Worcester but the 

middle part of the game, we went a bit flat, so we need an 

80-minute performance because we know that Saints can cause 

us some problems.

Christmas Presence campaign supporting isolated 

and vulnerable neighbours 

As part of their annual #ChristmasPresence campaign, Bristol 

Bears Community Foundation is once again partnering with 

the local BS3 community and their dedicated Covid community 

response. 

With more than 300 isolated and underprivileged families and 

individuals in BS3, the shadow of Ashton Gate Stadium and the 

Bears’ own neighbourhood, the Community Foundation has 

partnered with the BS3 Community Response - a grassroots 

community response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

As part of their festive plans the BS3 Community Response have 

launched their ‘Pass the Parcel’ appeal. With this year being hard 

on so many, the local mutual aid group BS3 Community Covid-19 

Response group Admin team, BS3 Community Development and 

BS3 Community Larder are working together to organise the 

biggest gift donation scheme the BS3 area has seen to date – 

with children from local schools, as well as local shelters and the 

tenants at Help Bristol’s Homeless accommodation being given 

gits to show they are both ‘seen and loved’ this Christmas. 

The Foundation’s #ChristmasPresence lead, Kris Tavender said: 

“This is a really tangible opportunity for us as individuals to 

make a difference to another individuals life. 

“Whether making an online purchase through the campaigns 

Wishlist or making a monetary donation, this is an chance to 

really show some love to our nearest neighbours. Our fans are 

so compassionate and generous in so many ways, and we really 

implore them to do what they can to help others who are less 

fortunate.”

SIVA 

Siva Naulago is out to follow in the footsteps of a 

long line of legendary Pacific Island-born players 

to have graced the Bristol Bears shirt, after finally 

completing his cross-code switch from Hull FC. 

The Covid-enforced suspension of the 2019/20 Gallagher 

Premiership season delayed Naulago’s arrival in the West 

Country while the 28-year-old speedster completed the 2019/20 

Super League season. 

But following Hull’s semi-final exit at the hands of Wigan 

Warriors, the Fijian-born try-machine, who scored 17 Super 

League tries in just 26 appearances, arrived at Bears HQ keen to 

make up for lost time in his new surroundings. 

“It’s good to be here and I really like the environment; the 

facilities are world class and the players have been welcoming,” 

he said. 

“We’re in these strange times and now I’ve finished in rugby 

league, I’m really looking forward to this season and the 

challenge of learning more and getting better. 

“I want to work hard and push myself to try and earn a place in 

the first team and hopefully I can kick on from there. I’ve got 

quite a few things I need to cover off with Pat (Lam) and Conor 

(McPhillips), because I’m new to the environment and hopefully I 

can get better and be performing in front of the fans very soon. 

“It’s going to be challenging for me for to break into such a 

world class team, but I take that as a challenge and hopefully I 

can run on the field with my new teammates soon.” 

Naulago arrives in Bristol fully aware of the club’s rich Pacific 

Island history and with his heart set on emulating the success of 

the players who have gone before him, and those he now calls 

teammates. With fellow Fijian-born players, Semi Radradra and 

Nathan Hughes, and a host of Samoan and Tongan stars in the 

Bears’ dressing room, settling into his new surroundings has 

something of a homely feel. 

“It’s like being back at home, around your neighbours and 

certainly makes settling in easier,” said Naulago.

“I know that here at Bristol, there is a big history with the Island 

boys throughout the years, but for me, when I come here, it’s like 

I’ve known the lads here for ages, and that’s how Island boys are. 

But I’m here to do a job and I’m looking forward to it.” 

Naulago’s passage to Ashton Gate is a remarkable one, having 

moved to the British Isles from Fiji aged just 18 to join the armed 

forces. He soon became a mortarman in the first battalion of the 

Yorkshire Regiment, before being stationed in Cyprus for two 

years and making a brief trip to Afghanistan. He put his military 

responsibilities on hold to pursue his rugby career and has been 

granted an extended leave by the Army, allowing him to take up 

his contract at Bristol Bears – and he’s determined to grasp the 

opportunity with both hands. 

“The culture that Pat presented to me in the interview, it’s so 

welcoming and it drives you to want to represent the Bristol 

Bears – it’s not only on the field, but off the field as well as we 

try and inspire the community through rugby success. It all 

pushed me to want to join the Bears. 

“I want to challenge myself every day and improve. I’m new to 

the environment so I want to always improve myself and build 

towards a first game at Ashton Gate. 

“I can’t wait to get started.”

Academy youngsters feature in 

Bears ‘A’ friendly 

A young Bristol Bears ‘A’, featuring eight 

of last season’s U18 side, faced Ealing 

Trailfinders on Saturday evening, in the 

first-ever fixture staged at the club’s new 

High Performance Centre. 

With a number of Academy youngsters 

playing their first games of senior rugby, 

the fixture - played on the Lansdown 

pitch - provided an important milestone 

in their development. 

Toby Fricker try and a penalty from Tom 

Wilstead completed the scoring for Bears 

‘A’, while a Levi Davis double led the way 

for Ealing. 

Senior Academy manager Gethin Watts 

said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for 

our young players to test themselves 

against a quality Ealing outfit. For some 

of these guys, it’s their first taste of 

senior rugby, so we were pleased to see 

how well they performed.
