William Trubridge to go for new deep diving record
William Trubridge has
announced he will again
attempt to break his own world
record for freediving in constant
weight, free immersion, no fins.
( williamtrubridge.com )
The record attempt will take
place at Dean’s Blue Hole
during a time window between
December 6th - 14th.
Freediving strong
Participation in Freediving is growing apace, Joy
Keene reported at NZUA’s AGM earlier this year.
She presented two charts shown here, the second
of which shows the breath holding records in New
Zealand.
William first began serious
training for the sport in 2003. In
2005 he was the first freediver
to dive at Dean’s Blue Hole, now
recognised as the world’s premier
freediving venue, and site of the
annual Vertical Blue event. There
he broke his first world record in
the discipline of CNF (Constant
Weight No Fins) in April 2007,
reaching 81m.
Since then he has broken this
record multiple times. In 2010
he was first to descend to 100m
during Project Hector, an event
to highlight the plight of New
Zealand’s critically endangered
Hector’s and Maui’s Dolphins.
William also holds the world record
in Free Immersion, with 124m set
at Vertical Blue in May 2016.
Tauranga U18’s win Underwater Hockey championship
October was a big month for New Zealand
underwater hockey, with the U18 Interzone
Championship and the 2020 New Zealand
Interclub Championships.
For the first time in 20 years, Tauranga players
won the U18’s – the trophy has always been won
previously by teams from Auckland or Wellington.
The Interclub Championships also saw fierce
competition with 33 teams and 350 athletes
taking part in 120 matches.
The National Rock Lobster
Management Group (NRLMG)
is seeking feedback on proposed
changes to minimum legal size
(MLS) of crayfish in the area
CRA3 which extends from the
North Island’s East Cape, south to
the Wairoa River.
Currently, commercial fishers
there are allowed to catch 52mm
male crayfish over the springsummer
period whereas recreational
fishers have a minimum
legal size of 54mm for males
year-round. This has long been
viewed as inequitable by local
recreational fisherman.
The NRLMG are currently seeking
U18 Interzone Championship
Results:
1st Premier Grade – Team Sobek from Crocodylus
Underwater Hockey Club (Wellington)
2nd Premier Grade – Team Supernova from Nova
Underwater Hockey Club (Auckland)
3rd Premier Grade – Team Furno from Phoenix
Underwater Hockey Club (Wellington)
Proposed changes to CRA3 minimum legal size crays
public support and consultation
to put forward to the ministry.
NZUA has representation on the
NRLMG to provide the recreational
interest perspective.
