Conservation International and like-minded
organisations do what they can to protect,
and learn more about them. We took photos
to share with Conservation International who
are also tagging and tracking some of them in
Cenderawasih Bay. Like human fingerprints,
whale sharks have a unique pattern of spots
allowing individual sharks to be identified.
Fortunately in New Zealand they are protected
in our waters. Let’s hope they will be around
for many more generations to enjoy. This
Sadly these beautiful animals are endangered
around the world. They grow very
slowly reaching maturity when around 30
years of age, and live to be 60-100 years
old. They reproduce only slowly.
In some areas they are still being hunted
with their fins used for soup. Others
are caught in nets, or hit by boats.
