As a convention, we try to use the verb “to design” in this text exclusively with the connotation of “designerly design”; however, we cannot avoid using the noun “design” – somewhat ambiguously – in both contexts, for the activity of or the result of engineering and for the result of designing as well as for the discipline of “design” (as opposed to engineering or the humanities). 4 Due to space limitation, we have not elaborated upon non-technical disciplines who are responsible for creating those components of a socio-technical solution that are not technical (like social/organisational policies, protocols, and procedures).
