AMERICAN GRASSFEDTHE LABEL:VALUE AREAS:EnvironmentPublic HealthAnimal WelfareVERIFICATIONFREQUENCY:Annually 2OUR RATING:55The American Grassfed (AG) label is comprehensive in its approach to animal welfare, andaddresses everything from diet to living conditions, to antibiotic and hormone use. Farmsare not only held to strict standards regarding the health of the animals, but also regardingthe health of the environment, including soil, wildlife, and ecosystem health. Consumers areassured that animals under the American Grassfed program were born and raised in theUnited States. Farms that participate in this label are audited regularly by a third party toensure that they are following the rules and doing what is best for their animals.FARMERS MUST:FARMERS MUST NOT:• Feed their animals grass, legumesand brassicas, browse, cereal graincrops, and harvested forages. 3• Allow existing wildlife and theirhabitat to coexist with animals on thefarm. 4• Create a written pasturemanagement plan that promotesbiological diversity, natural resources,and healthy soil. 5• Not remove their animals frompasture unless there is bad weatheror some other threat to theirwellbeing. 6• Create a written herd health planthat is updated every two years, orparticipate in another third partyverifcation program that requiresregular farm visits. 7• Treat sick or injured animals torelieve their symptoms using AGapproved medications. 8• Use electric cattle prods unless it isabsolutely neccesary to prevent injuryto the handler. 9• Treat any animal with items on theprohibited substance list including:growth promoters, feather meal,animal biproducts, milk replacer thatcontains prohibited substances, orantibiotics. 10PESTICIDE USE:Pesticides are not allowed under thislabel, unless they are being used to treatproblem plants that couldn't be removedusing holistic methods, livestock havebeen removed from the area, farmershave collaborated with IPM programto create an effective plan, and afterpesticide applications, there is a 30 daysdelay before reintroducing animals. 11Food Labels 1018
