Key Aspects of Radiographic PracticeANATOMICAL TERMINOLOGYThe human body is a complicated structure. Errors in radiographicpositioning or diagnosis can easily occur unless practitioners havea common set of rules that are used to describe the body and itsmovements. All the basic terminology descriptions below refer to thepatient in the standard reference position, known as the anatomicalposition (see opposite).Patient Aspect■■■■Anterior aspect is that seen when viewing the patient from thefront.Posterior (dorsal) aspect is that seen when viewing the patient fromthe back.Lateral aspect refers to any view of the patient from the side.The side of the head would therefore be the lateral aspect of thecranium.Medial aspect refers to the side of a body part closest to themidline, e.g. the inner side of a limb is the medial aspect of thatlimb.Planes of the BodyThree planes of the body are used extensively for descriptions ofpositioning both in plain X-ray imaging as well as other cross-sectionalimaging techniques. The planes described are mutually at right-anglesto each other.■ Median sagittal plane (MSP) divides the body into right andleft halves. Any plane parallel to this, but dividing the body intounequal right and left portions, is simply known as a sagittal planeor parasagittal plane.■ Coronal plane divides the body into an anterior part and a posteriorpart.■ Transverse or axial plane divides the body into a superior part andan inferior part.2
