Radiographic ProjectionsABDOMEN – ANTERO-POSTERIORSUPINEPosition of Patient and Image Receptor■■■■The patient lies supine on the imaging table, with the mediansagittal plane at right-angles and coincident with the midline of thetable.The pelvis is adjusted so that the anterior superior iliac spines areequidistant from the tabletop.The image receptor is placed longitudinally in the Bucky tray andpositioned so that the symphysis pubis is included on the lowerpart of the image receptor, bearing in mind that the oblique rayswill project the symphysis pubis downwards.The centre of the image receptor will be approximately at the levelof a point located 1 cm below the line joining the iliac crests. Thiswill ensure that the symphysis pubis is included on the image.Direction and Centring of X-ray Beam■■The vertical central ray is directed to the centre of the imagingreceptor.Using a short exposure time, the exposure is made on arrestedrespiration.Essential Image Characteristics■■The area of interest must include from the diaphragm to symphysispubis and the lateral properitoneal fat stripes.The bowel pattern should be demonstrated with minimal unsharpness.Additional Considerations■■The ‘pregnancy rule’ should be observed unless it has been decidedto ignore it in the case of an emergency.Gonad shielding can be used, but not when there is a possibilitythat important radiological signs may be hidden.40
