Key Aspects of Radiographic PracticeGENERAL CONSIDERATIONS FORTHE CONDUCT OF RADIOGRAPHICEXAMINATIONSPatient Considerations■■■■■■Always introduce yourself to the patient and state your profession.Explain the procedure and the patient’s role.Rehearse any breathing manoeuvres (or similar) if the patient has alimited ability to cooperate.Check if the patient has complied with any preparation instructions(e.g. have they removed relevant clothing or jewellery?).Ask if the patient has any questions or concerns.After the examination inform the patient what they should do nextand check they understand the advice given.Procedural Considerations■■■■■Always prepare the X-ray room for the procedure prior to thepatient entering the room.Follow departmental protocols for the examination, e.g. the focusreceptor distance (FRD), normally 110 cm unless otherwise stated.If using computed radiography:1 do not take multiple projections on one receptor/plate as thiswill confuse image processing algorithms;2 use the smallest receptor size consistent with size of the bodypart to maximize resolution.Always collimate to the area of interest as excessive field sizesreduce image quality and increase patient dose.It is best practice to apply anatomical side markers at the timeof the examination and not to use electronic markers when postprocessing the image.14
