A CDF Leadership Forum recently
held at the Command and Staff
College in Canberra brought about
90 ORs from all three Services
together to focus on retention and
leadership issues.
Comprised of corporals to WO1s
and their equivalents, mixed-service
syndicate groups brainstormed topics
ranging from retention to leadership
culture before returning to
present their findings to the assembled
group.
RSM-A WO Stephen Ward said
the intent of the two-day forum was
to seek points of view on relevant
and topical subjects important to
Defence from junior leaders of the
three Services.
“Subjects for this year’s forum
focused on how the Defence Force’s
leadership culture can more positively
impact upon retention of the right
people, whether the ADF prepares
individuals for their role as leaders
and how the ADF can address the
retention and recruitment of more
women,” he said.
A participant in the forum, Cpl
Shaun Webb, DPTC, said while he
initially felt he was being dirked for
something onerous, he eventually
came to value the opportunity he
was given.
STOPPING a vehicle for a random
breath test is fairly routine for most
police, but when that vehicle is a
1943 Greyhound armoured reconnaissance
vehicle, it’s a somewhat
gutsy move.
This happened to Tpr Stephen
Davis, Australian Federation Guard
member and avid militaria collector,
on a trip from Canberra to Cooma
recently.
Tpr Davis has been collecting
militaria since he was a young kid
and the Greyhound is part of that
collection.
“It has a bit of history,” he said.
“It served in Italy with the Americans
who gave it to the Italians as a gift
after the war. It was later imported
into Australia by a collector. I bought
“Actually, I was expecting to be
talked at for two days, but we were
split into syndicates, left to discuss
the three topics and come up with
our own thoughts and ideas,” he
said.
“On the topic of leadership and
training, for example, the Navy and
RAAF guys said they don’t do subject
courses like we do and they
seemed quite keen to have their
it from a bloke in Sydney for $40,000
a while back.”
Tpr Davis is a member of the
Australian Armoured Vehicles
Association and the Australian
Military Vehicle Collectors Society.
He said he was on a run from
Canberra to Cooma with four mates
when he was stopped by NSW
Police.
“They said it was a random
breath test but they just wanted to
check it out and take a few pictures,”
he said.
Other interesting items in his collection
include a never-fired .303 rifle
made at Lithgow after the war, and
an M3A1 White Scout Car, bought
from a collector at Nowra for $8000
in 2003.
Tpr Davis is a qualified driver and
crew commander on M113s.
ORs talk leadership
Services adopt that kind of training.
“Another thing that was widely
agreed upon in relation to retention
was that families should be included
in Service benefits – childcare for
example.
“I also found it interesting to see
how things are looked at from a bigger-picture
point of view – there are
people out there in the Army prepared
to test and adjust for problems
and issues we see at the ground
level. And leadership probably is
one of those big issues.”
Cpl Webb said he understood
that effecting change in an organisation
as big as Defence could take a
long time and that, as an individual,
his opinion could easily be overlooked.
But, he did feel that the
forum offered him a voice in a context
where it may eventually have
some impact.
“More importantly, though, I
think that a forum like this could
cause change on its own,” he said.
“I actually came away from this
with a changed attitude towards a
lot of things – especially leadership
– and I think if everyone who
attended took a little bit away from
the forum and change a few things
around them because of it, it could
have a real ripple effect from the
ground up.”
