ELEVEN of Defence’s best players from the
national carnival represented Defence against an
ACT under 19’s team on November 21.
While the cream of available ADF talent was on
hand and already warmed up for the challenge, they
were never expected to beat the ACT young guns.
However, they did turn in a respectable performance,
especially in the middle order, with POs Mark
Ham and Luke Grimmond hitting very entertaining
65 and 60 runs each.
Set a target of 349 to win, the ADF side decided
at the outset that their only mission was to bat out
their full 50 overs and give the youngsters a decent
hitout in the lead up to their own carnival.
However, the quick wicket began to show some
promise for the batsmen early on, giving the ADF
side a glimmer of hope.
With several balls dispatched to the boundary
and an odd one even topping the fence, the game
got quite exciting.
“It was a fantastic experience to hit out against a
team of basically full-time cricketers – all of whom
were less than half my age,” PO Mark Ham said.
“In the end, I think we gave the ACT boys a
decent game and we achieved our goal to bat out
the 50 – and put more than 200 runs on the board.
“But 350 was a bit beyond us today.”
Final score was ACT U19s 5-348 defeated
ASCA XI 7-213 in a full 100-over game.
