Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed
November is here! Typically, November is the beginning of the holiday
season. For most people it is the busiest time of the year. From family
gatherings and feasts to shopping for the holidays and so much more! For
many business owners, it is a time to start wrapping up year end inventory
counting and thinking ahead to the new year.
This past year has been one for the record books! We have seen things not
only as a Chamber, but as a Nation, that we have never seen or
experienced before. It has been a scary time for many. For some, it has
been a time of loss and devastation. For others, a time of reflection and
hope for better days. We as a town have lost a few businesses and gained a
few as well.
With all of the ups and downs that have come, we want to assure you that
we are working diligently to figure out how to navigate in these
unprecedented times in a way that will help support our members and
their businesses, as well as our little community of Lake Placid. Should
you have any requests or special needs, please do not hesitate to reach out
to us. We have been working to promote shop local, eat local, and drink
local. We are doing our best to build awareness in our community about all
of the local businesses that are available to patronize.
The Greater Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce is grateful for all of our
members. We are thankful that you have chosen to let us promote your
businesses and blessed to live in this wonderful town.
Happy November from your Greater Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce.

This Month our Board member highlights Vicki
Spires.
Ms. Spires is our newly elected President of the
Board. She has been on the board for around 20
years only taking a break for a year around
2013/2014. She also sits on the Nu Hope and
Highlands County Health Facility Board’s. She is the
VP/Area Manager at MidFlorida Credit Union in
Lake Placid.
Vicki has lived in Highlands County for 49 years. She
and her husband Jeff have two beautiful children who
have blessed them with 3 grandchildren whom they
enjoy spending time with. Camping, ATV/UTV riding,
NASCAR, and Gator Football are a few of the things
that you might find Vicki doing during her down time.
Vicki is a valuable asset to the Chamber Board. Her
input and unwavering dedication is much
appreciated. We are very thankful for her many years
of service, and we look forward to many more years of
working together with her for the good of Lake Placid,
and it’s businesses’.
Every month we will hide a symbol of a WiFi connection. Which symbolizes the connection between the
Chamber and it’s members. Look for the hidden symbol throughout the newsletter each month and when you
find it, send us an email at information@lpfla.com and tell us where it is (Page and general vicinity on the
page.) If correct, you will be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate to one of our member businesses. Prizes
will vary from month to month.
Entry emails must contain the edition of newsletter that the symbol was found in (Month) and the finders name
along with the best way to contact that person. Drawings will be held on the last Monday of every month.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Jennifer Bush with Barbara Powell
This month’s member spotlight is shining on Barbara Cooper Powell,
MBA., an agent with Aflac.
Barbara moved to the area in 2012 from Wauchula to be closer to her
Mother.
Barbara is a people person, and when getting her master’s degree in
2008, was told that because of that, she should work in sales. She has
a background in healthcare and was wanting to make a change that
would afford her to manage her own time and be able to spend more
time with her 3 grandchildren.
She has been with Aflac since January of 2016. When asked what
makes Aflac different from other area businesses or what she would
want people to know about Aflac. Barbara stated “Aflac is more than
the cute little gecko commercials. They have been around for a long
time and they pay claims without a lot of hassle. They don’t coordinate
benefits and they sell to businesses as well as to individuals, and for the
most part it is inexpensive.”
Fortunately, the pandemic has not been hugely impactful to her
business, because she is able to do business over the phone and webex.
Barbara can be reached at 863.840.2865 or by email at
barbara_powell@us.aflac.com for your insurance needs.
October 16 th was Bosses day!
On Friday, October 16 th we celebrated Boss’s Day at the Chamber! Nicole, and
many of the Volunteers surprised Jennifer with a cake, flowers, and a few cards.
If you Google the definition of a Boss, this is what you get: As a noun: A person
who is in charge of a worker, group, or organization. As a verb the definition is
To give (Someone) orders in a domineering manner. But to describe our “Boss”
at the Chamber, we like the form of the word used as an adjective. Excellent,
Outstanding.
Jennifer leads by example. She is always willing to go the extra mile to make
everyone feel special, and her heart for this community and its businesses is
larger than life. We may be a little bit partial, but we are mighty proud of our
boss on Boss’s Day and every day in between.
MURAL TIDBITS
Tea at Southwinds
The very first mural in Lake Placid, Tea
at Southwinds is a beautiful mural
that depicts three ladies having
afternoon tea at Litl Loj resort, later
named Southwinds.
Litl Loj was owned by Dr. Melvil
Dewey, who was the creator of the
Dewey Decimal system. It was a
popular destination for many notable
people such as Winston Churchill,
Henry Ford, and Howard Hughes to
come and relax in Florida’s sunshine.
Tea at Southwinds was based on a
postcard that was found at the Lake
Placid Historical Society.
The mural was dedicated on May 15,
1993 and was painted by Thomas
Freeman. It is located on the Caladium
Arts & Crafts Cooperative building, at
132 East Interlake Boulevard and
South Pine Avenue. It is sixty feet wide
and thirty feet high.
Stop by and see this, our first beautiful
mural today.
