Ahhhh December! Cooler weather, holiday celebrations and the ending of
another year.
This year we have experienced many firsts and faced many challenges.
Through the challanges, our community saw plenty of positives. New
businesses opened, existing businesses perservered and new residents to
the area are just a few of the positives that we are clinging to.
The Christmas Parade is always a highlight at the Chamber, and this year
it was a welcome bit of normalcy for us all. This year it was held on
December 12 th at 7 pm. We hope that you were able to join us. We also
had a Christmas social on December 3 rd at The Barn at Paso Fino. There
were Clydesdale drawn carriage rides and a few of our yearly awards were
handed out as well. Santa even made an appearance. It was a much
needed night out that was full of joy.
So while we have all had to face challenges in the year 2020, and overall it
may not feel like it was a great year, if we try to look for the good things
and keep our mindset as positive as possible, then the outlook for the
coming year is sure to be brighter.
Merry Christmas and a very happy, healthy new year to all of you from all
of us at the Greater Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce.
Did you Know?
“Christmas decorating sends nearly 15,000
people to the Emergency Room!
If you've ever watched Clark Griswold decorate his house
in Christmas Vacation, that probably doesn't come as
much of a surprise. In fact, the Consumer Product Safety
Commission estimates that 14,700 people visit hospital
emergency rooms each November and December from
holiday-related decorating accidents. So please, be
careful when you're decking your halls.”
This month’s member spotlight is on Home & Office Essentials and Mail Call Shipping.
Dan Stickle purchased the businesses on October 30, 2020 from longtime owners Jeanne
and Mark Fortier, who started the business in February of 2003. Mr. Stickle was looking for
a career that afforded him to be his own boss, so when the opportunity presented itself, he
ran with it
Located in downtown Lake Placid, these businesses are a community staple. They offer
every kind of supply that you would need to run a business or home office. From
printer ink, to letting them do the printing or copying for you. From specialty papers to your
standard copy paper, Home and Office Essentials has you covered. They offer color printing
as well as black & white copies and specialty jobs from booklets to newsletters and
flyers. Notary service is available.
Mail Call Shipping offers mailbox rental, along with shipping and packing supplies. They
are an authorized UPS shipping outlet, FedEx, DHL and also U.S. Mail, along with providing
all the packing and shipping supplies you need and expert packing skills.
When you need office supplies or shipping supplies, head over to Home & Office Essentials, telephone
number 863.465.1661 and Mail Call Shipping telephone number 863.531.0081, both located at 204
South Main Ave. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Let them know that the
Chamber sent you.
Charlie Brown: Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?
Linus Van Pelt: Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.
"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their
flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone
round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not:"
"for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you
is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the
babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a
manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and
saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace, good will toward men.'"
That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.
We celebrated Christmas with our volunteers a little bit early this year. On Saturday, November 21 st , in
the Mural gallery, we held a brunch to celebrate all of our volunteers. Afterwards we had a bit of a tree
trimming party to decorate the Chamber. A lot of the ornaments that are on our tree this year are from
the volunteers. We all enjoyed the food and fellowship and we look forward to many more Christmas
celebrations together.
MURAL TIDBITS
Turkey Hunt - The Lost Opportunity
According to the U.S. Poultry and Egg
Association, over 46 Million turkeys will
be eaten at Thanksgiving alone. That
number does not take into account that
some people eat turkey for Christmas as
well. So, with the holidays upon us, we
thought it fitting to choose Turkey Hunt
as our mural showcase this month. It is
a beautiful mural that is located at 312
West Interlake Boulevard in DeVane Park.
It is 42 feet wide by 7 ft. 8 inches tall. It
was painted by Thomas Brooks and
completed on February 21, 1996.
It captures the mood of old, rural Florida.
With its moss covered live oak trees and
Palmetto brush scattered throughout. If
you were to take a drive down any of the
many back roads in Lake Placid, these are
just the kinds of scenes you might see.
There is also an owl, an armadillo and a
snake all within the vegetation and tree’s.
The turkey displayed is of the Osceola
species, which is native to Florida and
lives nowhere else in the world. It is said
that they have sharp eyesight as well as
keen hearing which makes them easy to
spook and not so easy to hunt.
The artist, Mr. Thomas Brooks won the
turkey stamp competition for Florida two
years in a row. In 1995 his winning stamp
was titled “Osceola Rendezvous” and
featured a tom turkey strutting for two
hens. In 1996, his winning stamp titled
“Limb Hanger” featured a turkey on the
limb of a pine tree. While both stamps
are very beautiful works of Mr. Brooks, we
are partial to our beautiful mural, and
hope that you will take the time to go and
view it in the near future.
While you are there, look for the hidden
sleeping hunter.
VolunteerShowcase
This months Volunteer Spotlight is shining
on Ms Lilia Eurich. “Lil” is part of our
Wednesday crew and is always willing to
chip in and help wherever she is needed.
She relocated to Lake Placid from
Wellington, FL, and we are so happy that
she did. Her quick wit, and happy demenor
is always such a bright spot to the week here
at the chamber, and she is the sharpest
dresser around!
We love our “Lil”, and look forward to many
more years together with her at the
Chamber.
