PAT LAM’S NOTES
Pat Lam has put the emphasis on
a ‘team performance’ as his side
gear up for their New Year’s Day
Gallagher Premiership clash with
Newcastle Falcons at Ashton Gate.
The Bears fought back to claim a bonus-point victory over
Harlequins at The Stoop in round four, with Lam admitting to
being disappointed with his side’s first-half display.
But the Director of Rugby, who also hailed his side’s resurgence,
said the focus was on ‘the Bears way’.
“We made it clear after the game that we were so much better
in the second half once we switched into team, and we, and the
Bears way, and boys did well, they came back and got the job
done,” he said.
“You’ve got to remember, it’s been 19 years since we won at The
Stoop against Quins, so it was a huge effort. But we also took a
lot of learnings – we spoke about it as a whole club today, staff
and players, around making sure it’s always ‘team versus me.’”
5
The Bears welcome an unbeaten Falcons to BS3 on Friday,
with Dean Richards’ newly-promoted side sitting second in the
Gallagher Premiership table – and Lam says they are aware of
the challenge they face.
“I’m looking forward to it. The last time we were at Ashton
Gate against Clermont, we were pretty disappointed with our
performance, so going back now against Newcastle, who are
above us - and with these next two games playing against
second and first - it’s a big few weeks for us as a club.
“It’s our only home game in this stretch of three Premiership
games and we want to give a really good account of ourselves,
take the lessons that we learnt in that first 40 minutes (against
Quins) and make sure we start much better and really go for it.
“There’s no doubt there’s some experience in that Newcastle
side, with Toby Flood and Micky Young controlling it really well,
but ultimately they play well together, they work hard, and Dean
Richards is a very good coach, a very experienced coach, and
they’ve got clarity on the way they want to play.
“It’s a great challenge for us, but the focus is on us being us, and
if we do that, it’ll give us the best chance of getting the victory
at home.”
open letter
WHEN we reflect on 2020, it’s been a
year that will live long in the memory.
The pandemic has affected everybody
in society and professional sport is
no different. As a club, we have faced
some stark challenges over the past
twelve months, but it’s testament to the
culture and unity of the Bears that we
have found a way to come through and
emerged stronger for the experience.
I’d like to place on record my thanks to our supporters – many of
whom, despite all of the uncertainty – voluntarily donated their
season card refunds and then purchased season cards for the
2020/21 campaign. The way that you have backed us, sending
hundreds of cards and good luck letters to the club ahead of the
Challenge Cup Final for example, means so much to everybody at
the organisation.
We know that when we are able to have you back at Ashton Gate,
the noise and atmosphere you create is unrivalled in the English
top-flight. We’re all missing the matchday experience of a sellout
crowd and cannot wait for those major events to return in 2021.
In addition, it’s been great to see our fantastic commercial
partners reaffirm their commitment to the Bears, while we have
been delighted to welcome Ravenscroft onboard as our new
principal partner.
On the field, we have shown tremendous growth and that’s credit
to Pat Lam, the players and all Bears staff. To start the year
with a famous victory at the Rec and to follow it up with a third
placed finish and a Premiership semi-final is excellent progress.
Of course, the standout moment was lifting the European
Challenge Cup which, for so many of us who have been involved
in the club for many years, was an incredibly proud moment.
With the world class High Performance Centre in place and
raising the standard across the board, this is just the start of an
exciting journey for the team. We will continue to strive to reach
our goals and achieve our vision of Inspiring Our Community
Through Rugby Success.
13
Throughout the year, we have been fantastically supported
by the Bristol Sport group and we are grateful to Mark Kelly,
Martin Griffiths, Gavin Marshall, Lisa Knights, Ross Wormald
and Dave Storr and their teams for the many hours of time and
commitment they have delivered to ensure the Bears can play
safely at Ashton Gate, as well as their efforts in communicating
effectively with our supporters and stakeholders throughout a
tumultuous period.
To our community team, led by Craig Capel, we truly appreciate
the way that you have stayed connected with the most
vulnerable in our city, showing innovation and enthusiasm
to overcome the many restrictions in place. Throughout the
summer, Craig and his volunteers teamed up with the partner
sporting charities and FareShare UK to deliver meals to those in
need in the Bristol community, as well as organising Zoom calls
and webinars with schools and local clubs.
Finally, a big thank you to those key figures who drive our vision
through inspirational leadership; Steve, Maggie, Jon and Karen
Lansdown and chairman Chris Booy and his wife Jackie, it’s a
privilege to work in partnership with you and to be part of what
we are building. I am looking forward to a prosperous 2021 for
the club.
Up the Bears.
CEO Mark Tainton.
BRISTOL BEARS
academy news
30
From a Premiership debut to
an international debut inside
12 months - it’s been a year of
meteoric rise for Academy star,
Ioan Lloyd.
The 19-year-old received his first Wales
call-up earlier this year following a series
of eye-catching displays for the Bears –
and capped a remarkable 12 months with
yet another sensational showing during
the bonus-point win against Harlequins
at The Stoop.
Lloyd made 136 metres with ball in hand,
beating six defenders and making two
offloads in a game that saw him start on
the wing and shift to full back when Max
Malins went off injured on 25 minutes.
He became the youngest Bristol player
ever to be capped by his country when
he came on as a second-half replacement
against Georgia at Parc y Scarlets, before
also featuring in the victory over Italy in
the final round of the Autumn Nations Cup.
In between those two caps, Lloyd
returned to the Bears for their Gallagher
Premiership clash with Worcester
Warriors at Ashton Gate, dazzling with a
man of the match display that saw him
provide a quite superb assist for Piers
O’Conor, land a try-saving tackle in the
corner and kick ten points in a 30-13
bonus-point win.
Lloyd was also on the scoresheet in backto-back
Heineken Champions Cup matches,
touching down late on in the defeat to
Clermont Auvergne and again in a bonuspoint
win in Galway against Connacht.
It means the Welsh youngster has now
scored on his Premiership, Challenge Cup
and Champions Cup debut for the club –
and his Director of Rugby, Pat Lam, says
Lloyd has ‘gone to another level’ since
returning from international duty.
“You can see why we introduced him one
year out of school with Bath here when
he scored in the corner.
“We’ve managed him nicely in the sense
of his development, giving him a bit of
game time.
“All the senior players: Charles Piutau,
Callum Sheedy, Luke Morahan, Semi
(Radradra), all of these boys have
helped him and as he grows it gives him
confidence.
“Then going into an international set-up
was outstanding and then he’s with Alun
Wyn Jones, (Justin) Tipuric and (Leigh)
Halfpenny, learning off them.
“He came back on Wednesday, the
players had a day off, he worked with the
coaches and he knew he’s part of our
group, and he came out and you can just
see he’s gone on to another level, and
he’ll get better and better.”
