PROTECTING the Port
Hills from future fires and
boosting native bird numbers
is behind a major tree planting
programme planned for winter.
The Summit Road Society
has received a $20,000 grant
from the city council’s
sustainability fund for the
project which
will see more
than 87,000
native trees
and shrubs
planted in the
Avoca Valley
in Heathcote.
$20,000 grant to boost
bird numbers on Port Hills
Said
Summit
Road Society
president Bill Woods: “Once the
trees are established into their
normal cycle, they will flower
and produce seeds which will
encourage more native bird life
to the area.”
The sustainability fund was
established in August as part
of the city council’s goals to
combat the impacts of climate
change, including reducing
greenhouse gas emissions
and building environmental
resilience.
beach rip
continues
to keep
lifesavers
busy
• By Samantha Mythen
TWENTY-SEVEN PEOPLE
were rescued in 10 minutes when
they were caught in a flash rip at
Sumner.
Surf lifesavers worked in messy
1.5m-plus surf to get the swimmers
out of the water. The rip
knocked many unsuspecting
people off their feet.
Said Surf Life Saving southern
region manager Chris Jeffery:
“Sumner is a beach like no
other. It receives many changing
currents from the estuary; one
minute they’re sending swimmers
left to right and then, the next
minute, they’re sending swimmers
in the opposite direction.
“Our team of volunteers and
staff are consistently watching this
and are always working to keep
the public safe.
“The lifeguards are doing
everything to make the water
as safe as possible but it is still
important that the individual
knows their swimming ability
and limits,” Jeffery said.
Full steam ahead for tug boat excursions
• By Samantha Mythen
TRIPS ON THE historic tug
boat Lyttelton are expected to
be very popular when they start
again in two weeks.
The public excursions will take
place every Sunday from January
24, weather permitting, until
Easter weekend.
The tug was booked out over
Christmas, hosting chartered
end-of-year work parties.
But this month will see the
first public sailings since March
last year after
Covid-19 kept
the boat in its
berth.
With most
Kiwis having
to stay in
New Zealand
Roger Ellery
this summer,
it is hoped
people will take an interest in tug
Lyttelton.
“We had sell-out sailings last
year pre-Covid, so we are hoping
for another great response this
year. People are interested in
the tug’s unique heritage,” said
Roger Ellery, of the Tug Lyttelton
Preservation Society.
The tug will depart at 2.30pm
from the No 2 wharf, cruising
around the harbour and out to
Lyttelton Heads. It will return to
dock at 4pm.
HISTORY: Tug Lyttelton leaves the port on a trip into the harbour. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
During the trips, a historian
provides a running commentary
on the tug and its history.
“Inside Lyttelton, the wheel
house provides a fun experience.
You can witness how the captain
runs the show and co-ordinates
with the engine room below
deck,” said Ellery.
“When the captain decides to
change the propellers’ settings,
they have to signal down to the
engine room via a telegraph
system.
“The engineers acknowledge
this and then start working to
ensure the captain gets what he
wants.”
Another highlight will
be a visit to the engine room,
where passengers will be able to
see the stokers’ shovelling coal
into the boilers, ensuring enough
steam is produced for the tug to
run.
Maintained and managed by
the Tug Lyttelton Preservation
Society, the steam-powered vessel
is more than 100-years-old
after being established in 1907.
A large amount of preparation
goes in to getting Lyttelton sea
ready.
“Each year, Lyttelton undergoes
an annual survey where she
is looked at in dry dock. The hull
is cleaned.
“The propellers get taken off
and checked for any cracks or
damage. A lot of maintenance is
carried out on the boilers,” said
Ellery.
Previously, tickets were on
sale at the wharf, but due to new
Covid-19 protective measures,
online bookings will now be
essential.
•For ticket prices, visit
www.tuglyttelton.co.nz. They
will be available later this
week
Akaroa’s hat-trick and batting maestro
SCALP: Inderjett Waraich and Stephen Fleming after
the Akaroa-based all-rounder claimed the former
Black Caps’ skipper’s wicket.
• By Chris Barclay
INDERJEET WARAICH used
to be a net bowler who offered
teammates technical advice after
tossing up some gentle medium
pace to boost their egos.
Turns out he is not as benevolent
to an opposition, given the Akaroabased
Indian all-rounder took backto-back
hat-tricks for Halswell in
the Metro Division One Twenty20
competition.
Waraich recorded the milestones
this season against Heathcote
and Sydenham. He also claimed
two wickets to close out his spell
in another clash with Heathcote
before Christmas.
“I used to bowl to make the
batters more confident,” he
explained.
“Sometimes your teammates
need to learn a little bit more. If
there are problems for me when
I go batting, I can’t notice myself
what I’m doing, but the bowler
can.”
Eventually the 26-year-old upped
his pace and mastered in and outswing.
Five of his hat-trick victims
were bowled.
Those batsmen are in good
company, with former New
Zealand captain Stephen Fleming
another to fall to Waraich’s guile.
Fleming was caught out – literally
– when he misjudged the Punjabi’s
pace during an All-Star game
against Queenstown’s T20 players
at Arrowtown in 2019.
“He thought I was going to bowl
spin but I bowled quick and he was
caught at mid-on,” Waraich smiled.
Still, stroke-making is Waraich’s
forte, with the top order batsman’s
output suggesting he might be
equipped to step up to senior grade
in 2021-22.
He is on the brink of tallying 800
runs across the T20 and one-day
formats. After nine rounds of the
50-over schedule his aggregate of
472 at 52.44 is 112 runs clear of his
closest rival.
Waraich has two one-day tons
and he also slugged 324 runs in 10
T20 knocks at 54 and a strike rate
of 129.60.
Ironically, Waraich would
not be starring for Heathcote
had Covid-19 not ended his
housekeeping job at a Queenstown
hotel, a setback that forced his
return to Christchurch in May, the
city he landed in from India as a
student in 2015.
Waraich started playing in a
lower grade T20 competition for
Sydenham and then switched to
Halswell before his move south.
“I was not playing that serious
(in Queenstown), now I’m mentally
prepared,” said Waraich, who
doesn’t train with this side because
he lives in Akaroa.
“At home I try and focus on
what I can do at the ground. You
will laugh but I put out my bat
and when I walk past it, it reminds
me I’m going to make some more
runs.”
Halswell president Mike
Chatterton was rapt to have
Waraich back in the side but
accepted he may be playing
elsewhere next summer.
“If he wanted to play seniors he
could. I’m more than happy to push
his case,” he said.
Waraich was also open to
promotion, though admits living
in Akaroa could be problematic in
terms of actual training during the
week.
“I am ready to take any challenge,
I would take the chance but I would
need to spend more time on my
cricket,” he conceded.
BAY HARBOUR NEWS has
a new reporter – Samantha
Mythen has come on board
this week after cutting her
CANTA.
Mythen knows the Bay
Avoca Valley’s ecosystem
to benefit from plantings
• From page 1
The planting of native
vegetation is set to offer
long-lasting environmental
benefits to Avoca Valley.
Woods hoped it would
invigorate more insects
and invertebrate, creating a
thriving ecosystem.
The planting will mainly
be carried out in the Upper
Avoca Valley but the
society would also like to
plant in the lower Avoca
Valley.
“This area is currently
primarily covered in gorse
which can be used to create
a protective nursery to help
establish the newly-planted
natives,” Woods said.
“Our intention is not to
A FURTHER four
projects based in
the Banks Peninsula
have received
grants from the
city council’s
Sustainability
Fund.
The Diamond
Harbour Community
Association
on behalf of
Friends of Morgan’s
and Sam’s
Gullies, received
$3000 for the
restoration of indigenous
biodiversity along the
walkways and gullies of
the city council-owned
land.
This group of local
volunteers is hoping to
transform the gullies into
native forests thriving
with indigenous bird and
insect life.
Said city councillor and
PREVENTION: The native vegetation to be
planted in Avoca Valley will be fire retardant.
The society is made up
of volunteers who work to
maintain the existing areas
in the Port Hills under
their care.
“We are calling on new
volunteers to help with this
project. The society’s aim is
to encourage and promote
natural growth of native
vegetation on the Port
Hills for people to enjoy,”
Woods said.
Planting is set to begin
at the start of winter.
The damp conditions
chairwoman of the sustainability
and community
resilience committee,
which approved the
grants, Sara Templeton:
“These well-established
volunteer groups
have already
done enormous
amounts of
planting and
ecological restoration.
This grant
empowers their
work even more.
provide the trees with
better opportunity to
establish themselves
before the drier summer
season sets in. After
planting, a maintenance
programme will be put in
place, ensuring the new
vegetation thrives.
This project is part
of a management plan
developed for Avoca Valley
by the society. It is hoping
to eventually introduce
walking and mountain
biking tracks to the area.
Grants for four other projects
Sara
Templeton
has lived in Charteris Bay
and Cass Bay and her first
part-time job was at Lyttelton
Her interests include the
outdoors, skiing and hiking.
“It is really
clear that more
native planting
is essential for biodiversity
regeneration. In the
Port Hills and Banks
Peninsula specifically, it
is clear that native species
are much more fire resistant
than others which is
fantastic.”
Three projects in the
Little River locality also
received funds for their
sustainable objectives.
The Little River Campground
was granted $2625
to contribute towards
the continued protection
of the native vegetation
and wetland in the Okuti
Valley.
The Living Streams
Community Nursery
Trust is using its grant to
help nurture and grow the
capacity of it’s community-run
nursery based out
of Little River.
Alongside propagating
indigenous trees and
shrubs that grow in the
Banks Peninsula, the
nursery helps with restorative
planting projects
in the area.
The Little River
Playcentre will use its
funding to install new
energy efficient lighting.
“Little River, like many
Canterbury community’s,
is really connected and
proactive on environmental
initiatives which
is great to see,” Templeton
said.

Malbec plantings have increased with popularity
• By Mark Henderson
THE RED GRAPE malbec is a
native of France, where it is best
known as one of the “so-called”
Bordeaux varieties, which is made
up by cabernet sauvignon, merlot,
cabernet franc, petit verdot,
carmenere and malbec.
Widely planted in Bordeaux in
the 1800s, the devastation caused
by the vine louse phylloxera saw
plantings diminish significantly.
The savage frost of 1956 then
almost dealt the coup de grace
with plantings further decimated
and replaced by cabernet
sauvignon and merlot.
More recently the variety
has begun to regain favour and
plantings have slowly climbed
once more.
The variety may have an even
longer history in Cahors in southwest
France where, unusually,
SOIL AND
HARDFILL
DUMPING
malbec is the dominant grape
variety – appellation rules
requiring a minimum of 70 per
cent malbec in the finished wine
and where plantings comprise
roughly 50 per cent of the French
total.
It often flies solo here, but can
also be blended with tannat and
other varieties.
Malbec is also found in the
Loire under its synonym cot.
All these pale into comparison
with Argentina, where this grape
variety has become the figurehead
for the local industry.
The north-western region of
Mendoza is a powerhouse of
grape growing and winemaking,
producing nearly three-quarters
of all the wine in Argentina.
Increasing volumes are being
imported here, where its modest
price and generous flavours are
finding many converts.
In New Zealand, it is mostly
seen as the supporting act in
blends such as cabernet malbec
or merlot malbec and barely a
handful of producers making
a varietal version. Its 111ha
(according to New Zealand
our fifth most widely planted red
grape variety, with roughly 75 per
Deeply coloured, it has plum
flavours similar to merlot, often
with an earthy or slightly “rustic”
twist and powerful tannins.
The following recipes
use Shaoxing rice wine.
It is pronounced ‘show
(as in ‘how’) shing.’
Prepared from glutinous
rice, it is aromatic
and inexpensive. It is
available from Asian
food stores and some
supermarkets You can
substitute it for a dry
sherry
Chicken chow mein
Serves two as a main course
or four as part of a Chinese
meal
Ingredients
Noodles:
200-250g dried egg noodles
1 tbsp sesame oil
Marinade:
1 tsp sesame oil
2 tsp each: light soy sauce,
Shaoxing rice wine or dry
authentic flavours and are easy to prepare.
50gm ham, julienned
2 tsp each: light soy sauce, dark
soy sauce
1 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine or
dry sherry
Salt and white pepper to taste
½ tsp sugar
3 tbsp finely sliced spring onions
or chives
1-2 tbsp sesame oil
Directions
Cook the noodles in a large pan
of boiling water until tender,
about five minutes. Drain well
then toss together with the
sesame oil.
Meanwhile, combine the
ingredients for the marinade in a
bowl. Julienne the chicken, cutting
it into strips about 5cm long.
Place in the bowl and marinate
for at least 10min.
Heat a wok on high. Add 1
tbsp of rice bran oil. When hot,
drain the chicken and stir-fry
in batches until cooked, about
2min. Remove and place aside.
Wipe the wok clean.
Heat the remaining rice bran
oil. Stir-fry the garlic for 10sec.
Add the peas or beans and the
ham. Stir-fry for 1min. Add the
noodles, soy sauces, rice wine,
salt, pepper, sugar and spring
onions or chives. Stir-fry for
Lifeboat
called to
motorboat
rescue
• From page 1
The December 21 rescue has
been the only major incident
so far on either Sumner or
Taylors Mistake beaches this
summer.
Meanwhile, three people on
a small motorboat anchored
off Whitewash Head, activated
their emergency beacon about
9am on Sunday.
They were at risk of sinking
after their boat had taken on
water. Eleven crew from the
Sumner Lifeboat Institution
responded, sending out their
jet ski, followed by their twin
jet ski.
After delivering the boat’s
crew safely to shore, the twin
jet ski, called Blue Arrow
Rescue, returned to the
waterlogged boat and towed it
back to the boat station.
Bid to protect farmland vegetation
THE PUBLIC have the
opportunity to share their views
on the protection of native
vegetation on coastal farmlands
in the Banks Peninsula this
month.
The city council is proposing
a change to the District Plan
regarding clearing of indigenous
vegetation in existing pastures.
It is calling for feedback from
the public, alongside contacting
owners of coastal property who
may be directly impacted by the
changes.
Council head of planning
and strategic transport David
Griffiths says the draft changes
relating to vegetation will only
affect property owners who clear
native trees and plants as part of
farming activities to maintain
existing pasture for grazing
livestock.
“The proposed changes seek to
limit the clearance of indigenous
vegetation within improved
pasture on Banks Peninsula
and the Port Hills to ensure
potentially significant native
trees and plants are not removed
without a resource consent,”
Griffiths said.
“We want to refine the meaning
of ‘improved pasture’ so it
can be more easily applied by
landowners when indigenous
vegetation is cleared, and ensure
compliance with existing limits
or the need for resource consent
in tandem with recognition of
areas of significance.”
For inquiries phone the city
council on 941 8999 and ask to
speak to Craig Davison about
the proposal.
Council staff will also be
available at drop-in sessions
being held from 5pm to 7pm at
the Gaiety Hall in Akaroa on
January 26, and the Diamond
Harbour Rugby Clubrooms on
January 28.
Feedback is open until 5pm on
February 23.
THE AVON-Heathcote Estuary
has been the target of many
grand schemes in the past.
Some of them such as a saltworks
and a flying boat base
would really have spoilt the view
of hillside residents if they had
happened.
One of the most ambitious
was Port Christchurch; a mole
and a canal stretching from
Sumner Head (Scarborough)
through to wet docks near the
old Lancaster Park.
Businessmen at the start of
the last century were concerned
about the high price of moving
goods through the railway tunnel
from Lyttelton. A new port
was proposed so ships could land
freight closer to the city.
The docks were planned for
the Wilsons Rd area. To get to
the docks, ships would travel
along a canal that would be 80m
wide and up to 8m deep at high
ESTUARY MATTERS
Failed proposal prevents port project at estuary
The Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai
Trust is a non-profit organisation
formed to protect one of New
Zealand’s most important coastal
wetlands. Each week, board members
will discuss matters regarding the
estuary, its rich history and what makes
it unique. This week Bill Simpson writes
about the failed bid to use the estuary
as a port for ships
tide (6.5m at low tide). The canal
would stretch for several kilometres
from Scarborough Head,
through the current Sumner Bar,
past Moncks Bay and McCormacks
Bay, through Ferrymead
and to the docks.
A mole from Southshore Spit
to Scarborough would protect
the canal. Sediment dredged to
make the canal would be used to
reclaim at least half the estuary.
Consultants reported back in
1908 that the cost of this project
AMBITIOUS: The Avon-
Heathcote Estuary could
have been turned into a
shipping port if the project
was not canned in the early
1900s.
would have been more than two
million pounds.
The Christchurch Canal
League was formed to push the
proposal. The Harbour Board
was divided on whether it should
go ahead or not.
A team of three independent
engineers was commissioned to
investigate further and their verdict,
thankfully, was against the
scheme because of the expense.
There are many hillside
residents who would like to
thank those three engineers
for preserving their view of the
estuary.

Van ready for work in courier business
I USED TO have regular packages
delivered to my home by courier.
The driver was also a regular, and
was local to my neighbourhood.
I still see him from time to time
driving the yellow Mitsubishi L300
van, although it is no longer used
for commercial purposes.
That van is looking a bit tired
nowadays, and I’m only guessing,
but I figure it’s probably done about
a million miles. That’s the way
those vans were built, they were
tough and engineered for reliability
and longevity.
Of course, the L300 has long
gone, and Mitsubishi Motors New
Zealand has been without a van for
many years, that is until now.
Sharing an alliance with Renault,
Mitsubishi globally has introduced
the Express van; basically it’s a
Renault Master/Traffic rebadged.
That makes little difference,
that vehicle also has a fearsome
reputation in the light commercial
market, and with Mitsubishi’s
marketing prowess it will do well
with the newcomer; there’s an everincreasing
demand for light vans
and in this age of internet shopping
and delivery, courier companies are
feeling the heat, with that, additional
drivers and vans, are in demand.
The Express van arrives here
in two variants, both with fourcylinder
engines. Put simply, there’s
a choice of manual or automatic
transmissions, both six-speed units.
The manual is hooked to a twinturbo
1.6-litre diesel, the automatic
with a single-turbo 2-litre diesel.
The evaluation was the latter, it
sits in the market at $52,990, the
manual will save you $5k.
I’ve driven many vans over the
years – Mercedes-Benz Viano,
Fiat Ducato, Hyundai I-Load,
Ford Transit, Toyota Hilux and the
L300 – it’s fair to say the Express is
one of the most refined, it is quiet,
comfortable and almost car-like.
A lot of that has to do with
the bulk-head construction
of the vehicle, the van area is
completely separated from the
cabin compartment, there’s little
rumble from the cargo section,
and the driving position, although
upright, won’t tax the body during
a long day of deliveries. Sure, it’s
a bit of a step up into the cabin,
CAVERNOUS: Low load height makes placing items in the
cargo section easy.
MITSUBISHI EXPRESS: Choice of two engines and transmissions.
certainly not made easier by old
age, but once there, the seats have
good support. Incidentally, there
are three seats, although individual,
they do represent a bench seat type
of configuration.
The cabin section is full of clever
compartments and ideas to make
commercial use easy. I particularly
like the workstation and clipboard
holder that sits upright and extends
from the middle seat back rest
and can be folded flat. What’s not
so clever is the central cup holder
which won’t hold your Coke bottle
when gravitational force takes over
– that required a bit of a clean-up
job. Thankfully, easy to remove
rubber mats made that job easy.
As an aside, the Express is also
entering a mild-facelift phase and
some of the interior features are
receiving an upgrade, centre dash
display panel will be introduced
and it will include touch screen
audio.
As you would expect from a
European-sourced vehicle, the
Express van is high on safety, there
are five air bags, electronic stability
control, and rear view reversing
camera.
In terms of load space,
Mitsubishi rates the Express with
a 5.2m3 cargo area, it also gets
around an 1150kg payload rating
and a 1715kg braked towing
capacity. In simple terms, it will
also take a standard NZ pallet
or Gib sheet between the wheel
• Price – Mitsubishi Express,
$52,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4999mm; width, 1956mm;
height, 1971mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1997cc, 125kW,
380Nm, six-speed
automatic.
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 10sec
• Fuel usage – 7.3l/100km
arches, there’s also an under-seat
flap which opens on the passenger
side so that long lengths of material
can be carried. Loading can be
made from the wide-opening rear
doors or from the sliders on each
side. One of the features I made
good use of was the multitude of
cargo rings that can be utilised to
tie down loads.
There’s plenty of power to haul
that big load. The 1997cc engine
is rated at 125kW (3500rpm)
with 380Nm of torque available
from 1500rpm. The automatic
gearbox is a dual clutch type and
that allows extra engine flexibility,
the combination is fluid and
responsive. Of course, the van’s
main function is that of load
capacity, so the entire driveline is
geared for that. Incidentally, drive
is sent to the front wheels.
Such is the smooth operating
manner of the engine, it’s hard to
tell that there’s diesel power, until
you look at the fuel consumption
figures. Mitsubishi rates it with
a 7.3l/100km combined cycle
average, during my testing time the
readouts were hovering close to
that at 8l/100km and 6.7l/100km
instantaneously at 100km/h, the
engine turning over slowly at
1900rpm.
Interestingly, the Express van
comes with an 80-litre tank, it
was full of fuel when I picked it
up and the fuel usage readout was
indicating an achievable distance
of 800km, the fuel gauge was also
showing nearly full after travelling
well over 200km during my time in
the vehicle.
In terms of open road
performance the Express moves
quietly and effortlessly, I drove it
as I would a car and found it stable
and balanced through the corners.
You have take into consideration its
construction and, of course, it’s not
dynamic, but it does have a certain
amount of handling prowess, it
won’t catch you out if a corner is
presented just that little bit quicker
than you had anticipated.
After a week in my care, I
became quite attached to the
Express van and it’s fair to say I
made good use of its load carrying
capacity, completing a multitude
of different household tasks. The
low load height making those jobs
very easy.
