8 Thursday January 14 2021 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz NOR’WEST NEWS Initiative to get children growing fruit and veges led by Lions club A PROJECT which educates children on the art of growing your own fruit, vegetables and flowers has sprouted at Belfast School. The venture led by the Riccarton-Waimairi Lions Club, starts this Saturday and includes the installation of raised vegetable boxes, outdoor tables and seating within the school grounds. The club wanted to support a community project in the city’s north-west, and the need for gardening facility was identified during discussions with the school, the Belfast Community Network and the Northwood Residents Association. “The extension to the existing garden educational area is to facilitate two teachers who are dedicated to teaching the pupils how to grow vegetables, fruit and flowers and in turn encourage pupils to develop a garden at home to provide fresh vegetables for the family,” Geoff Rountree, of the lions club, said. “The teachers not only teach gardening in school time but also in lunch hours.” Club members will be at the Main North Rd site this Saturday to start the project, but still needed more “people power” armed with gardening and battery-powered tools. Rountree said with the project under way, further school and community projects were identified during discussions with local groups. Because of this, he said it provided an opportunity to establish a new Lions club in the area to continue supporting future needs in the community. “There is an opportunity for a Lions club to be based within the Belfast-Northwood area supporting this community,” said Rountree. “We seek your consideration and assistance for this to happen.” PLAN: A gardening project will soon sprout at Belfast School, which will teach children the art of growing your own fruit, vegetables and flowers.
