The Perfect Natural Bay

C baía naturalmente perfeita
que parece ter sido
deliberadamente cortada das rochas
para abrigar as pequenas embarcações
coloridas que flutuam nestas águas,
durante o dia e noite. As casas têm
vista para o mar, não deixando
dúvidas de que estas pessoas viveram
essencialmente de e para o mar. As
terras agrícolas são profundas com
plantações de banana. Estas são uma
das principais riquezas económicas
da região. Nos terrenos mais altos
é interessante observar os terrenos
agrícolas, conhecidos como “poios”,
que sobem vertiginosamente pelas
encostas. É difícil compreender como
é que os agricultores conseguiram
chegar a um terreno tão inacessível.
A produção de vinho é também de
importância vital para esta área com o
seu clima ameno e abundância em Sol.
Câmara dos Lobos
Câmara de Lobos é uma cidade, uma
freguesia e um concelho localizado
no lado oeste-centro-sul da Madeira.
Tem o nome da área onde foram
encontrados lobos marinhos. São as
focas-monge, duas das quais também
são vistas no seu brasão de armas.
Atualmente existem muito menos
focas-monge do que nos anos 80.

C natural bay which seems to
have been deliberately cut from
the rocks to shelter the small colourful
craft which float on these waters by day
and by night. The houses overlook the
sea, leaving no doubt that these people
once lived essentially of and from the
sea. The agricultural land is profuse with
banana plants. These are one of the
principal economic riches of the area.
On the higher grounds it is interesting to
observe the agricultural terraces, known
as ‘poios’, which climb vertiginously up
the slopes. It is difficult to understand
how the farmers managed to reach such
inaccessible terrain.
Wine production is also of vital
importance to this area with its mild
climate and abundance of sunshine.
Câmara dos Lobos
Câmara do Lobos, which translates out
to ‘chamber of wolves’ in English, is a
city, a parish and a municipality located
in the west-central south side part
of Madeira. It is named after the area
where sea wolves (lobos-marinhos) were
found. They are the monk seals, two of
which are also seen in its coat of arms.
Nowadays, there are much fewer monk
seals than in the 1980s.
