Merry
Christmas Madeira!

As
Natal .
Destes odores caraterísticos nasce a expressão:
Já cheira a Natal!
A capital, Funchal, converte-se ela própria num
presépio de proporções reais, dadas as características
naturais do seu anfiteatro, do qual emergem
ornamentações florais e luzes multicolores.
A anteceder o Natal, as “Missas do Parto”, que
se iniciam a 16 de Dezembro, atraem os fiéis. As
festividades continuam culminando no dia 31, com um
glamouroso espetáculo de fogo-de-artifício. Estes
constituem excelentes motivos para viver a “Festa”
na Madeira. Venha daí e viva esta quadra inolvidável
connosco!
hristmas is the most important time of the year,
c a time to celebrate customs and traditions in a
tribute to folklore and legacy of the inhabitants.
Everything revolves around the “Festa” (the Festivity), and
arrival of the month of December is most eagerly awaited
by all.
Christmas in Madeira is celebrated with joy, colour
and lots of enthusiasm. The Christian traditions,
during Christmas and New Year season are genuinely
associated with the customs of the locals. Throughout
the month of December until the Three Kings day, held
on January 6th, this festive season is lived with a special
feeling, combining religious ceremonies with the joy for
the arrival of a new year.
The placing of the decorative illuminations indicates
the beginning of the Christmas and End of Year
festivities. Funchal, as well as in many other villages
around the island, are filled with thousands of lights
and street decorations, in a unique vision of the
overall joyfulness that is felt in the streets. By this
time houses are meticulously arranged and lovely
decorated with the traditional “lapinhas” (cribs),
in addition to the making of a Christmas tree. The
typical delicacies of this festive season begin to be
prepared, for instance the “broas” (honey biscuits) and
“bolo de mel” (honey cake), liqueurs and the “carne de
vinho e alhos” (pork in wine and garlic), and flowers
and seasonal fruits are bought. A unique sweetscented
experience that is commonly designated

by locals with a popular saying: It already smells like
Christmas!
The main capital - Funchal is transformed into
a life-size nativity scene, given the natural features
of its amphitheatre contour, from which floral
decorations and multi-coloured lights emerge.
Christmas festivities continue, culminating on
December, 31st with a glamorous firework show,
renowned in 2006 by the Guinness Book of Records
as the largest firework display in the World. It is
within the midst of this grand show that Madeira bids
farewell to the old year and welcomes the New Year.
These are excellent reasons for you to experience the
“Festa” in Madeira. So come along and celebrate this
memorable festive season with us!

ver the years, Madeira’s tourist destiny has
o demanded both quality service and products
from this region which fortunately, for Madeira,
and from an international point of view, has successfully
met such demands with a good deal of professionalism
and distinctiveness. However, it must continue to work
harder, both externally and internally, if it is to attain greater
achievements.
It was with this in mind that, in 1979, a series of initiatives
were taken. Among them was the mass implementation of
tourist-aimed advertisement - a large-scale publicity stunt
designed to lay emphasis on the island’s Christmas and Endof-the-Year
Celebrations.
Tourist promotion usually begins on November 15
and ends on January 6 of the New Year. It is comprised of
illumination, decoration, animation and an unforgettable
ten-minute firework display.
Madeira Island Magazine | November - December 2020
On the highest pylon of all, the last figure of the passing
year is switched off, and then the date of the New Year
immediately appears in lights. All around there are good
wishes in every language: “Happy New Year! Feliz Ano Novo!
Bonne Année!” You will not be able to prevent a lump rising in
your throat at this moment. It is the Passagem do Ano - the
passing of the year - like the passing of an Angel, and quite
different from the New Year celebrations in Europe with
popping champagne corks. The illuminated date suspended
between the sea and the mountain in this island night is a
symbol of mystery, marking a death, a birth, and heavy with
unknown destiny. You will never really have celebrated the
New Year properly if you have not had this experience.
At midnight, suddenly in a single burst of sound and
light all the ships’ sirens, all the church bells and all the
fireworks begin at once. Enormous showers of sparks
blossom in the sky, the heavens are full of shooting stars,
not in any one spot alone, but over the whole of Funchal,
on the quays, terraces and hills and from every belvedere.
Coloured lights splutter and take flight. Stars rain down
into the mirror of the bay and the sound of the explosions
echoes in the mountains. Here and there churches and
palaces are illuminated by the clouds of pink smoke from
the fireworks, pouring forth like dragons breathing fire. But
even if the weather is bad, neither wind nor rain will stop the
rockets from being set off, and their diffuse light through the
raindrops only seems to add to the fantasy of the display.

Dating to the eighteenth century, Fort of Saint Benedict (Forte de São Bento)
was built to defend the coast and harbour.
Forte de São Bento foi
o mandado construir em 1708
pelo então Governador da
Madeira, Duarte Sodré Pereira, com o
intuito de defender as populações dos
ataques de piratas e de corsários.
Em 1815 há referências sobre
este forte, que naquela época estava
arruinado.
e armas nacionais. Do lado do mar
pode observar-se um pequeno nicho
contendo uma imagem de São Bento.

he Fort of Saint Benedict
was built in 1708 by the then

Pereira Sodré, to defend the population
from pirate attacks.
There are references from 1815
relating to this fort, which at that time
was in ruin.
In 1916 recovery and beautification
work started, the results of which can
be seen today on the road leading up to
the village of Ribeira Brava. It is a small
circular tower, covered by a crenulated
terrace with a guardhouse. The main
façade, facing north, has a portal the
opens into a Roman arch, topped by
national inscriptions and weapons.
On the seaward side a small niche
containing an image of Saint Benedict
can be found.
In 1920 this small fort was leased to
the local Municipal Council to serve as
a prison. Today, perfectly adapted to
the visual context of the village, the fort
houses a Tourist Information Centre.

Fanizani AKUDA, Sylvester MUBAYI e Anderson MWALE.
individualizado enquanto artistas. No
caso de Erina FANIZANI, é óbvio ter
sido ela a inspirar ao marido, Fanizani
AKUDA, o estilo que mais tarde
haveria de lhe granjear celebridade.

artists have made it internationally.
Names like Henry MUNYARADZI or
Bernard MATEMERA and, to a lesser
extent, Fanizani AKUDA, Sylvester

familiar to all those who take an
interest in contemporary African
art.
In 1981, Mr. Joe Berardo
acquired more than 2500 sculptures
that were displayed in a cactus
garden in Pretoria (South Africa). As
such, the Berardo Collection must
hold many first, and indeed only,
attempts at sculpting. A special
point of interest are the sculptures
by women artists. The female
sculptors at Tengenenge sign under
their own name which means they
had an individual status as artist.
In the case of Erina FANIZANI, for
instance, it becomes obvious that
she has provided her husband
Fanizani AKUDA with the style he
became famous for later on.

a
a Ilha.

Neste novo formato, o museu
apresenta para além da reconstituição
do atelier, uma apresentação da
história dos processos fotográficos, do
praticamente todas as grandes casas
novidades numa base regular.
O Museu possui nas suas coleções
cerca de 800.000 negativos datáveis
entre 1870 e 1978, constituindo uma
riquíssima fonte histórica da Madeira
no século XIX e XX.
he “Atelier Vicente’s” was the
T first photographic studio
to open in Portugal. The
founder of the photographic studios,
Vicente Gomes da Silva, initiated
his photographic activity in the
middle of the 19th century when he
started to dabble with daguerreotype
photographic experiments in
1848. Four years later in 1852 he
began practise as a professional
photographer. The studios remain
where they had first been started:
in the quaint and picturesque open
patio salon at the start of the Rua da
Carreira in central Funchal.
The interesting array of
photographs is a precious reminder
and recollection of what may have
been forgotten in Madeira’s rich past
such as the arrival of the first water
plane in Madeira, the holiday snaps of
Churchill, or George Bernard Shaw, or
the photos of the last few years of the
life of the last Emperor of the Austro-
Hungarian Empire.
The “Atelier Vicente’s” is controlled
by the Regional Government of
Madeira, who has since restored
it to the character of the old
studio. Besides the wide range of
photographic equipment on display
there are also thousands of negatives
and glass plates.
In 2014, the museum closed for
requalification works and reopened
on July, 2019, now renamed as the
“Museu de Fotografia da Madeira”. In
addition to maintaining the memory of
the original Atelier, it is now asserting
itself as the only national museum
entirely dedicated to photography,
revealing Madeira’s photographic
heritage and many of its unknown
authors and works.
In this new format, the
museum presents, in addition to
the reconstitution of the studio,
a presentation of the history of
photographic processes, from the
daguerreotype to the first color
photographs, including the magic
lantern devices and stereoscopy. It
now offers a permanent exhibition
space representative of the various
authors included in the collection,
which includes the collection of
practically all the great Madeiran
photography houses of the 19th and
20th centuries, as well as another
temporary exhibition, which will
display news on a regular basis.
Being the oldest photographic
museum of the Iberian Peninsula, it is a
unique and definite must for all lovers
of the art of photography and for those
who are simply fascinated by history of
days gone by.

The Ukulele

Faziam
parte dos mais de quatro mil
madeirenses que na altura
emigraram para estas ilhas.
Atravessando o

e 133 homens, iniciou a
23 de Abril de 1879 o que
seria uma travessia, cheia
de sacrifícios e privações,
de 4 longos e exaustivos
meses. Após tal tumultuoso
périplo, desembarcam extenuados a
23 de Agosto em Honolulu cantando, na alegria
de pisar terra firme, acompanhados por um
tocador de Machete (Braguinha). Estavam
mundo: o Ukulele.

tradicional havaiana, o ukulele foi bastante
utilizado na música popular americana.

he ukulele is a chordophone classified
t as a plucked lute; it is a subset of the
guitar family of instruments, generally
with four nylon or gut strings or four courses of
strings. The ukulele originated in the 19th century
as a Hawaiian interpretation of a small guitar
like instrument brought to Hawaii by Madeiran
immigrants. It gained great popularity elsewhere
in the United States during the early 20th century,
and from there spread internationally.
The ukulele is commonly associated with
music from Hawaii where the name roughly
translates as “jumping flea”, due to the
action of one’s fingers playing the
ukulele resembling a jumping
flea. According to Queen
Lili’uokalani, the last
Hawaiian monarch, the
name means “the gift
that came here”, from
the Hawaiian words
uku (gift or reward)
and lele (to come).
Developed in the 1880s,
the ukulele is based
on a small guitar-like
instrument, the cavaquinho,
introduced to the Hawaiian
Islands by Filipino immigrants.
Three immigrants in particular,
Madeiran cabinet makers Manuel Nunes, José do
Espírito Santo, and Augusto Dias, are generally
credited as the first ukulele makers. Two weeks
after they landed aboard the Ravenscrag in late
August 1879, the Hawaiian Gazette reported that
“Madeira Islanders recently arrived here, have
been delighting the people with nightly street
concerts.” One of the most important factors in
establishing the ukulele in Hawaiian music and
culture was the ardent support and promotion of
the instrument by King David Kalakaua. A patron
of the arts, he incorporated it into performances
at royal gatherings.

rochosas nas montanhas
da ilha da Madeira, na zona
de ocorrência da floresta
laurissilva, de preferência
áreas onde exista abundância
de til, árvore cuja baga se

mountainous subtropical
Atlantic main island of Madeira,
although it formerly also bred on the
neighbouring Porto Santo Island.
It mainly occurs on the northern
slopes of the mountains, but smaller
numbers are found in the south
where suitable patches of laurel

Pigeons can breed from their
first year, and nesting occurs
throughout the year, although mainly
from February to June. The nest is a
typical pigeon construction, a flimsy
structure of twigs and grasses usually
placed high in a tree in thick forest.
One, rarely two, smooth white eggs
are laid, although no nest with two
chicks has ever been found.
The young are able to fly in 28
days, and are independent within
eight weeks.
It is estimated that there are
about 10,000 of such species on the
archipelago.
This species is protected under the
European Union Birds Directive,

A vida nesta ilha indomada era muito
difícil e a gentil Ana d’Arfet, cujo

Os descobridores portugueses,
Zarco e Tristão, quando aí chegaram
alguns anos depois, edificaram então
a primeira capela da ilha, atribuindo
o nome de Machico à localidade em
honra dessa inscrição.
Permanece uma lenda; no entanto,

the discoverers found the cross, the

It remains a legend; however,
even today it is easy to imagine such
a romantic tale set in the magnificent
Machico Bay. Being one of the biggest
bays in the region, the greenish
blue of its crystalline waters is truly
breathtaking and even more so when
it is adorned by the colourful fishing

Ilhas Selvagens
Savage Islands
elvagens é o nome do conjunto
s de ilhas que se situam a 250
quilómetros a sul da Madeira.
Constituídas por duas ilhas principais
e várias ilhotas de origem vulcânica
e muito agrestes, com uma área total
de 273 hectares, o arquipélago é um
santuário para aves.
As Selvagens dependem
administrativamente do concelho do
Funchal.
O arquipélago consiste em dois
grupos: o grupo nordeste compreende a
ilha Selvagem Grande e duas pequenas
ilhotas, Palheiro da Terra e Palheiro do
Mar. O grupo sudeste compreende a ilha
Selvagem Pequena e o Ilhéu de Fora,
entre numerosos ilhéus mais pequenos,
que incluem o Alto, o Comprido, o
Redondo e o pequeno grupo dos
Ilhéus do Norte. Uma extensa barreira
de recifes circunda o arquipélago,
tornando-se difícil ancorar na sua costa.
As temperaturas destas ilhas
excedem as da ilha da Madeira e a
temperatura do mar permanece
confortável durante todo o ano.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau disse que
encontrou ali as águas mais límpidas do
mundo.
O seu acesso é restrito, devendo, os
interessados em visitar as ilhas, requerer
previamente uma autorização especial
passada pelo Parque Natural da Madeira.
A Reserva Natural das ilhas
Selvagens foi criada em 1971, sendo
uma das mais antigas Reservas
Naturais de Portugal. Atualmente é a
única reserva portuguesa galardoada
com o Diploma Europeu do Conselho

à necessidade de defender a avifauna
marinha ai nidificante contra a intensa
predação humana, que se intensificou

cada vez maior número de barcos de
pesca a motor.

uninhabitable archipelago
in the North Atlantic, roughly midway
between Madeira and the Canary
Islands. The archipelago comprises
two major islands and several islets
of varying sizes, that represent the
southernmost region of Portugal. The
archipelago lies about 230 km (143 mi)
and three small islets: Sinho Islet
(Portuguese: Ilhéu Sinho), Palheiro do
Mar, and Palheiro da Terra.
The southwest Group - including
the main island of Selvagem Pequena
and Fora Islet (Portuguese: Ilhéu de
Fora), it is surrounded by a group
of very small islets and a group
collectively known as the Northern
Islets (Portuguese: Ilhéus do Norte):
Alto, Comprido and Redondo.
The islands physical
characteristics are consequence
of mountain-forming and volcanic
forces that occurred between 60 and
70 million years ago. The average
annual temperatures range between
17–19 ºC, generally exceeding those
in Madeira (defined as a subtropical
maritime climate), while sea
temperatures remain comfortable all
year round.
The scientific and natural interest
of this tiny group of islands lies in
its marine biodiversity, its unique
Madeira Natural Park, the regional
environmental authority.
The Natural Reserve of Selvagens
Islands was created as part of the
Madeira Natural Park; it is one of the
oldest nature reserves of Portugal
and it also includes the surrounding
shelf to a depth of 200 m. In 1976,
permanent surveillance began, and in
1978 the reserve was elevated to the
status of Nature Reserve.

Madeira’s Waves
Madeira é um destino
A entusiasmante para os
apreciadores e amantaes
de surf. Na Madeira existem vários
atrativos para a prática de surf.
Além dos famosos “point breaks”,
a ondulação média é de 2 metros,
com elevada frequência ao longo
do ano e as paisagens vulcânicas
ao redor das praias são de uma
beleza impressionante.
ano!
Na Ilha da Madeira os spots de
surf são de classe mundial. Surfistas

of the largest and imposing
ocean waves on the planet. Giant,
storm-generated swells make their long

many Island residents, this means only
one thing: Surf’s up!
Surfing is a surface water sport
in which the participant is carried
along the face of a breaking wave,
most commonly using a surfboard,
although wave-riders may make use
of kneeboards, body boards (aqua
boogie boards), kayaks, surf skis,
and their own bodies. Surfing-related
sports such as paddle boarding and

other derivative sports such as kite surfing
and windsurfing rely primarily on wind for
power, yet all of these tools may as well be
used to ride waves.
The exact origin of surfing is unknown,
but most historians believe that the
Polynesians were already well versed in
the sport by the time they migrated to the
Hawaiian Islands some 2,000 years ago.
Early Hawaiians called surfing “he‘e nalu,”
which literally translates to “wave sliding.”
During this time, only high-ranking “wave
sliders” had access to the best surf spots.
King Kamehameha III himself was said to
be an avid and skilled surfer.
Surfing really took off in the early
1900s. Riding boards made mostly from
hewn redwood and balsa wood, early
surfers risked their lives to take on these
giant waves.
Today, thanks to a number of modern
innovations and inventions, the surfing
population on the west side of the island
has been steadily increasing. Wave
riders and spectators gather here from
November to February, hoping to catch
that perfect wave. Although winter in
Madeira may not be the best time and
place to learn how to surf (the summer
months provide safer, saner conditions),
Madeira is still an uncrowded surf
destination. Respect the locals, and you’ll
enjoy the rides of a lifetime.
Ask any surfer, and he or she will tell
you that surfing is an exhilarating thrill,
a natural high, the sensation of riding a
wave and the challenge of facing every
wave is different.

devotos.
boiar. Os populares levaram a imagem
para uma pequena capela que existia
na aldeia, onde passaram a venerá-la,
mas a imagem desaparecia do altar,
indo aparecer junto à rocha basáltica
na foz da ribeira. Foi então que o
povo decidiu construir uma eremita
onde a imagem do santo ali pudesse
permanecer, salvaguardando-os de
assaltos de piratas ou corsários.

aqui se pode observar, contam-se
alguns peixes de grande porte, como
o Mero, ou a Manta e a Jamanta,

Winter Wonderland
Everyone who has holidayed in Madeira in the winter will know how wonderful
this island can really be. Madeira has grown in popularity over the years, and the mild
winters have played a large part in its rise to prominence. Madeira’s climate is generally
considered to be one of the most perfect in the world. Winter temperatures range
between 16 and 20 degrees Centigrade! There are also several micro-climates, with
Funchal one of the sunniest at 6 to 7 hours per day. Ponta do Sol and Calheta are even
sunnier, but with less shelter than the capital. Night temperatures are only a few degrees
cooler than the daytime.
Walking is very popular in Madeira during the winter and they are tailored to suit all
levels. You can take a short country ramble or cliff top stroll. For more serious walkers a
hike over more difficult terrain including the spectacular Levada walks in Madeira can be
organised, all of them taking in the wonderful scenery, flora and fauna.
Organised coach excursions are a very popular way to explore Madeira. As it is less
busy in the winter things are at a slightly easier pace, making the
whole experience more relaxing. Madeira has many places you’ll want to visit, so
here are a few ideas to get you started.

Jardim do Mar
Jardim do Mar translates into
a ‘Garden by the Sea’ and the
name could not have been more apt.
The little town sitting on a plateau has
quickly gained in popularity. Its three
main beaches are the Ponta Jardim,
Portinho and the Enseada. Due to the
International Surf Competition held here
these beaches have become a surfer’s
paradise.

The Cannons of Faial
Built in the early twentieth
century, the area in which
ten cannons keep watch was never
considered a fortress, but rather a local
watch against invaders, or gazebo for
visitors. It is a simple recreation of a
military battery which includes ten
eighteenth century English. The fortress
area provides breathtaking views of a
large stretch of the coastline, the center
of Faial and, on clear days, Porto Santo,
the Serra da Penha d’ Águia and the
northern part of Ponta de São Lourenço.
Ponta de São Lourenço.

Porto Santo
Porto Santo is one long
beach with a bit of an island
attached. Along its nine kilometres
of soft white sands, you’ll find just a
handful of hotels and restaurants,
making Porto Santo one of the last
‘undiscovered’ resorts in Europe. The
island boasts a first-rate international
golf course; the rugged interior is a fine
setting for energetic walks, and there’s
horse-riding, diving, game-fishing and
all manner of other diversions to be
found. There’s an intriguing touch of
history, too, as Porto Santo’s capital,
Vila Baleira was once home to none
other than Christopher Columbus. And
it is easy to get to, either by ferry from
Madeira, or by plane.

Nun’s Valley
Curral das Freiras is a civil
parish in the municipality
of Câmara de Lobos. The population
consists of about 2,000 inhabitants, in
an area of approximately 25 km².
It is situated in the mountainous
interior of the island. Being one of
the more distant locations from the
municipal seat of Câmara de Lobos, it
is geographically isolated from other
communities by the cliffs and peaks
surrounding its central valley. A tunnel
southwards in the direction of Funchal
now offers safe access to the valley.
Curral das Freiras offers great hikes, like
the one heading to Boaventura, stunning
views and delicious chestnut cakes.

São Vicente
São Vicente is an area
characterized by green nature
and abundant forest, modelled by volcanic
forces and erosion in its beautiful slopes.

the picturesque town of São Vicente is the

The Garajau Partial Nature Reserve is
located on the south coast of Madeira
Island, east of Funchal, occupying a
coastline extension of approximately
six miles and covers an area of 376

It is a marine park that includes a
strip running from the high tide line and
into the sea to a depth of 50 metres.
Amongst the fauna of this park are
larger fish such as the Epinephelus
guaza (mero in Portuguese) and also a
variety of other coastal species. Groups
of Atlantic manta rays (manta birostris)
can be seen here every year.
Their size and graceful movement
has transformed the area into an
international attraction. Any fishing
activity is forbidden inside the park.
Navigation is also highly controlled.
