Winter Wonderland
Everyone who has holidayed in Madeira in the winter will know how wonderful
this island can really be. Madeira has grown in popularity over the years, and the mild
winters have played a large part in its rise to prominence. Madeira’s climate is generally
considered to be one of the most perfect in the world. Winter temperatures range
between 16 and 20 degrees Centigrade! There are also several micro-climates, with
Funchal one of the sunniest at 6 to 7 hours per day. Ponta do Sol and Calheta are even
sunnier, but with less shelter than the capital. Night temperatures are only a few degrees
cooler than the daytime.
Walking is very popular in Madeira during the winter and they are tailored to suit all
levels. You can take a short country ramble or cliff top stroll. For more serious walkers a
hike over more difficult terrain including the spectacular Levada walks in Madeira can be
organised, all of them taking in the wonderful scenery, flora and fauna.
Organised coach excursions are a very popular way to explore Madeira. As it is less
busy in the winter things are at a slightly easier pace, making the
whole experience more relaxing. Madeira has many places you’ll want to visit, so
here are a few ideas to get you started.

Jardim do Mar
Jardim do Mar translates into
a ‘Garden by the Sea’ and the
name could not have been more apt.
The little town sitting on a plateau has
quickly gained in popularity. Its three
main beaches are the Ponta Jardim,
Portinho and the Enseada. Due to the
International Surf Competition held here
these beaches have become a surfer’s
paradise.
