Sugarcane
cana-de-açúcar é uma planta
a que cresce melhor em regiões
tropicais devido ao clima
tropical disponível. São ricas em açúcar
e pode chegar alturas de entre dois a
seis metros.
Tornou-se amplamente cultivada
em torno da Ilha da Madeira. A cana-deaçúcar
é considerada uma das plantas
mais valiosas da história da humanidade

usos múltiplos. Na Madeira, a cana é
usada para produzir vários produtos
tradicionais que são vendidos ao redor
da ilha como também são exportados.
A cana é espremida através de
maquinaria adequada, extraindo o
seu mel que pode ser encontrada em
qualquer um dos três engenhos de mel
localizada pela ilha: Calheta, Porto da
Cruz, ou Ribeiro Seco.
É com base na aguardente de cana,
que se faz a célebre Poncha. O mel de
cana é um dos ingredientes base para o
tradicional Bolo de Mel.

one of the main basic ingredients in the
preparation of the traditional cake called
‘Bolo de Mel’ and Madeira’s white-rum
lemon juice honey drink - Poncha.
