CULTURE
6LONDON
The English capital’s
rich musical history has
deep roots dating back
to the Victorian era,
when British music halls
entertained the masses.
Leaving a strong legacy in their wake, these
halls paved the way for the London’s live music
scene to thrive. Today, the city is known for its
iconic venues, from The Royal Albert Hall with
its classical concerts and the Roundhouse in
Camden offering a wide variety of genres, to
the many bars and venues lining the cobbled
backstreets of Soho. Venturing north east of
the river will take you to Abbey Road Studios,
where Beatles fans mimic the routine pictured
on the band’s iconic 1969 album cover.
NEW ORLEANS
Music fills the streets of this prominent
Louisiana city, known as the birthplace
of jazz. Music and history are deeply
intertwined in New Orleans, and both
its African heritage and the wave of
immigrants that landed here have greatly
inspired how music has evolved. The Big
Easy is best known for its Mardi Gras
celebration – a colourful brigade of
floats, fancy dress and brass bands.
PORTUGAL
Born along the waterfront,
the dramatic songs of
fado (literally ‘fate’) speak of
life, struggle and passion. The
genre originated in Portugal in
the early 1800s and quickly took
its place as the music of the country.
In 2011, UNESCO recognised fado
on its Intangible Cultural Heritage
list. Experience this soulful music as
you dine at the historic Alpendurada
Monastery, overlooking the beautiful
Douro River.
DUBROVNIK
Dubrovnik’s medieval Old Town is
especially magical at night and
guests on a Mediterranean Odyssey
journey can book an optional
excursion to the spectacular Sponza
Palace where you can take a seat in
the 16th-century cloistered courtyard
for an exclusive performance of traditional music
and dance. Dressed in colourful national costumes,
the award-winning troupe thrill audiences with
their talent and energy.
VIENNA
Known as the City of Music, Vienna is a
must for classical music fans. Many of the
greats lived and worked here, including
Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Strauss,
Mahler, Haydn and Schubert, and the
city holds annual festivals to celebrate
their music. Feel your heart sing at
an optional exclusive performance
in a Viennese palace on a delightful
journey along the Danube.
