pet focusOUT OF THEWOODS:A NEW ANIMALRESCUEstory and photos by Robin Beaudoin OwnbyWildlife rescues andrehabbers are a rare and wildbreed themselves, waving offthe ugly to get to the healingand release of wild animals.Memphis and the Mid-South’sfacilities have been stretchedthin to rescue injured andorphaned wild animals, so theintroduction of Out of theWoods is a welcome presence.Rescuer/owner Sami Harveylives and works on theproperty in Shelby Forest, witha lake behind, and surroundedby woods, creating an idealspace for the animals to bereleased. Decorated withhanging plants and a ceilingstrung with twinkle lights, thisspace has a positive vibe.Harvey allows a squirrel time toexplore his area outside his enclosure.Sami Harvey demonstratesthe two-stage raccoon releasecages, explaining what they eatand their surroundings,“They’re all under the buildingright now. They can get out ofeverything. They made a littlehole right here. They sleepunderneath the facility duringthe day, that’s by design.”Raccoons are her favorite torehab, and the building ispacked with two cages full ofsquirrels and one opossum,affectionately named GeorgeJones, who is soon to bereleased. George Jones wasbitten by a dog and is finishinga round of antibiotics. Harveyexpects more opossums in thespring. People sometimes evencheck the pouches ofdead opossums on theroadside and rescuetheir babies.Open the doors tothe building andformer residents of therescue come to visit.One adult squirrelstrolls in to socializewith Harvey and theother teenagesquirrels. Squirrels areborn in the spring and the fall,and the fall babies, you have torelease where you raised themand feed them over the winter,then they go on their way.” Inone corner of the building, shekeeps the baby squirrels, justgrowing hair, and feeds themone by one with a bottle ofsquirrel formula.There are a few ways tobecome a rehabber. Harveysuggests, “You can go formaleducation, earn your hoursthrough another rehabber, butreally getting your hands dirtyand understanding what goesinto it is important. Mentally,it’s a lot of hugging babyanimals and happy endings,but in reality, it’s a lot of poopand it’s a lot of death. There’sno getting around it. Noteveryone will survive, nomatter how much you lovethem. It’s messy.” Harveyvolunteered with a rehabmostly dealing with raccoonsfor the better part of summer.“They’re like little toddlersforever. They’re just likebabies.” The vet, Dr. RalphPope, cares for the animals inneed of medical attentionbeyond Harvey’s scope,volunteering time and advice.“I brought him a squirrel, andhe just felt it and knew whichbone to set. They do die,” saysHarvey. “The ugly parts of thejob are watching animals die,the smells, the cage cleaning,and some long nights and busydays.”The rescue is holding aholiday auction fundraiser inNovember (visit their websitefor details). Local artists andvendors have donated timeand items to the cause. Out ofthe Woods is fundedexclusively through donations.Harvey makes the most ofevery opportunity. “Every timeI get a promotional email, Ireply to them with an emailasking for donations.”Currently, the animals aredrinking Liquid Death water,donated by the company.Grove cleaning suppliesdonated $50 as well. Groceriesare always in high demand,with all of the animals needingbedding, food, and materials.Want to help?
