Youth a priority for community board

ENVIRONMENT and youth
– these are the top priorities for
the Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board in the
coming months.
But their number one priority
for the beginning of 2021 is finding
a deputy chair.

The search
for a full board
comes after Davids survived a
leadership coup late last year
by five fellow board members
representing themselves as the
Labour-aligned People’s Choice.
Davids was first elected to
the board in 2013 and since
April 2019, she had worked as
chairwoman. This was after the
resignation of Sally Buck, one of
Christchurch’s longest-serving
elected members.

backlash for their calls that Davids
step down. They eventually
revoked their plans.
Once a new deputy chair is
found, focus will turn to the
board’s long term plan and setting
priorities for the rest of the
year.
This includes continued work
on the Sumner park and skate
area with community consultation
taken into consideration.
From October to November last
year, the board heard from 141
individuals and groups on development
of the area.
The village green site has since
be included as part of the design,
meaning the space will be a
place for the entire community
to enjoy.
The board will be contributing
to a climate change workshop on
February 24.
“This will help us to decide on
where we can best put our efforts
to help make some positive
tangible change,” she said.
An exciting event for young
people based in the Linwood and
Ferrymead area is planned for
March. The board has partnered
with Youth and Cultural Development
and the Eastgate Mall
to host the Ball in the Mall high
school event.
Because most high schools
had to postpone their functions
and ball events in 2020 due to
Covid-19, the mall saw a need in
the community to nurture their
youth. The board is assisting
with some of the financing and
staffing of the event.
Manager of Eastgate Mall,
Louise Ledger, is also setting up
a pop-up store in the mall to
help students with their formal
attire.
“I am definitely very hopeful
for 2021. I think last year proved
that having a positive outlook
and always believing that things
will be better in the end is
essential,” Davids said.
