Boat safety
group
concerned
over draft
breakwater
design
• By Samantha Mythen
THE BOAT Safety at Naval Point,
Lyttelton group has expressed
concern about the area’s $27
million development draft plan,
and has asked the city council to
still consider its feedback on the
breakwater.
In November last year, the draft
plan was approved by the Banks
Peninsula Community Board after
two development options had
been released for public consultation
in July.
During these consultations,
support for option two with a
fixed breakwater, connected to
the spit, featured strongly in the
feedback. A breakwater is a structure
constructed near coastal land
which protects a launching and
receiving area from harsh weather
and water drift.
However, in the draft plan, a
design was chosen featuring a
smaller breakwater with two exit
and entry points. None of the affected
groups had been consulted
on this new design.
Enjoying a supreme situation on the lower slopes of Richmond Hill,
this magnificently proportioned approx 3001m section serves up
spectacular ocean views and provides buyers with an exceptional
array of opportunities. Following the demolition of the venors
previous home, the site is essentially a blank canvas and now only
hosts the home’s old footprint, a double garage and a portion of
retaining walls (being sold “as is, where is”). The 180-degree vistas
are sublime, covering Pegasus Bay and beyond. Better yet, this
parcel of land is exceptionally private, soaked in sunshine and cannot
be built out which provides significant appeal for those wanting to
construct their very own residential masterpiece.
New parking restrictions soon
In Brief
• By Samantha Mythen
BOAT SHED owner Hayden
Yessev has had enough of
vehicles illegally parking by the
Duvauchelle public boat ramp.
He said he has seen some
vehicles overstay
the 10min parking
restriction by up to 13
hours.
Yessev has been lobbying
the city council
for clearer parking signage
for nearly a year.
Steffan
Thomas
Care &
Compassion
We pride ourselves on the
very highest level of service
Over the Christmas
period he saw a car overstaying
the limit almost
every day.
This is creating issues for
others wanting to access the
space.
The parking restriction is
next to the Duvauchelle boat
ramp and has the short time
duration to allow marine users
to efficiently access the water.
Said city council transport
operations manager Steffan
Thomas: “The parking restriction
is in place to provide opportunities
for boat ramp users
to load and unload equipment
and passengers before parking
elsewhere.”
“The boat ramp is a busy
facility that is subject to high
demand at peak times for access
and parking.”
Yessev’s persistent campaigning
appears to be paying off.
On November 16 last year,
the decision was made by the
Banks Peninsula Community
Board to decrease the parking
time limit to 5min and
to design the area as a
loading zone rather than
a parking area. The city
council approved this
change and new 5min
loading zone signs are
soon to be installed with
new road markings also
put in place.
A city council spokesperson
said traffic operations
staff had visited the site on numerous
occasions to investigate
the issue prior to the board’s
decision.
“The P5 loading zone will
reinforce that it is not a place
to park for extended periods
of time and that users must be
actively loading and unloading
within the space,” Thomas
said.
“I suspect it’s not always the
boat owner parking there, but
their mate who is new to the
area who doesn’t see the sign.
Hopefully, the new signage
and clearer road markings will
make it more obvious,” Yessev
said.
SOLUTION: The 10min parking restriction will soon be changed to
a P5 loading zone. Inset: The boat ramp is a popular parking area.
Youth a priority for community board
• By Samantha Mythen
ENVIRONMENT and youth
– these are the top priorities for
the Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board in the
coming months.
But their number one priority
for the beginning of 2021 is finding
a deputy chair.
“We are
looking for
someone who
has the time
and drive to
take this position
on,” said
chairwoman,
Alexandra
Alexandra
Davids
Davids.
The search
for a full board
comes after Davids survived a
leadership coup late last year
by five fellow board members
representing themselves as the
Labour-aligned People’s Choice.
Davids was first elected to
the board in 2013 and since
April 2019, she had worked as
chairwoman. This was after the
resignation of Sally Buck, one of
Christchurch’s longest-serving
elected members.
The People’s Choice members
Jake McLellan, Yani Johanson,
Michelle Lomax, Jackie Simons
and Sunita Gautam faced public
PRIORITIES: Children at the temporary skate park facility in Sumner. Designs for a
permanent skate park and green area received public feedback last year.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
backlash for their calls that Davids
step down. They eventually
revoked their plans.
Once a new deputy chair is
found, focus will turn to the
board’s long term plan and setting
priorities for the rest of the
year.
This includes continued work
on the Sumner park and skate
area with community consultation
taken into consideration.
From October to November last
year, the board heard from 141
individuals and groups on development
of the area.
The village green site has since
be included as part of the design,
meaning the space will be a
place for the entire community
to enjoy.
The board will be contributing
to a climate change workshop on
February 24.
“This will help us to decide on
where we can best put our efforts
to help make some positive
tangible change,” she said.
An exciting event for young
people based in the Linwood and
Ferrymead area is planned for
March. The board has partnered
with Youth and Cultural Development
and the Eastgate Mall
to host the Ball in the Mall high
school event.
Because most high schools
had to postpone their functions
and ball events in 2020 due to
Covid-19, the mall saw a need in
the community to nurture their
youth. The board is assisting
with some of the financing and
staffing of the event.
Manager of Eastgate Mall,
Louise Ledger, is also setting up
a pop-up store in the mall to
help students with their formal
attire.
“I am definitely very hopeful
for 2021. I think last year proved
that having a positive outlook
and always believing that things
will be better in the end is
essential,” Davids said.
CONCERNS: Members of the Boat Safety at Naval Point, Lyttelton
James Ensor, Roger Allen and Eden Husband are hoping for a long
breakwater, connected to the existing spit, to be put in place with the new
developments.
PHOTO MONTAGE: GEOFF SLOAN
Group worried that further
problems would develop
• From page 1
The Boat Safety at Naval
Point, Lyttelton group expressed
concern over why
this idea was presented
when there was unanimous
support and feedback for
option two with the fixed
breakwater.
“We decided on the best
option and then this came
out as something we’d
never seen,” Roger Allen,
who has 73 years of
sailing experience,
said.
“We give credit to
the council because
the consultation process
was quite good
and they did have options,”
member Eden
Husband said.
“But then they proposed
their own venture with a
reduced breakwater.”
The group, which has
been campaigning for 28
years for development of
the public boat ramp and
surrounding marine area,
strongly argued for the
fixed breakwater during
the consultations.
“The critical thing with
boating is to protect the
area that you launch and
retrieve your vessels, and
to have an area for boats
to congregate safely while
they are waiting to get off
the water,” Husband said.
They are worried that
if the draft plan design is
chosen for the final plan to
be modelled off, it will only
create more problems.
Allan explained that
having two entry and
exit points may result in
dangerous traffic issues
and congestion, aggravated
by those who do not fully
understand boating rules.
The protected area would
be smaller, meaning less
boats would be sheltered
from the bad weather and
the launching area would
not receive sufficient
coverage from the
winds. It would
also be harder
for larger sailing
boats to launch
safely.
“The general
concern of the
public is modelling
of the shorter
structure is inadequate for
the needs of the environment,”
member James
Ensor said.
Banks Peninsula Community
Board chairwoman
Tori Peden told Bay
Harbour News that what
was passed as the draft
plan would not be the final
design, hoping to reassure
the likes of Boat Safety and
other concerned groups.
“What was passed by the
board is not set in concrete
and we are now consulting
with engineers,” she said.
“The draft plan was just
one step in the process and
it shows roughly where
everything will go. We are
still yet to finalise aspects
such as the number of car
parks and the breakwater
Tori Peden
length.”
However, Boat Safety are
concerned around why the
majority supported option
for the longer breakwater
had not been included in
any engagement from the
council since.
They are worried that a
sticking plaster approach
will be taken to the project,
having seen many failures
since they first started
campaigning.
“We would like to see
more design and modelling
around the second option,
which is what everyone
supported. The community
using the facilities needs to
feel safe and secure,” said
Ensor.
Anthony Whitely, who
has worked as deputy and
regional harbour master
for eight years, also supported
a new longer breakwater
moulded into the spit
currently in place.
“This gives more protection
from the winds for
vessels in the area of the
slipway and allows for
more room to manoeuvre,”
he said.
“Our argument as always
been before you build the
asset, protect it,” Husband
said.
Peden confirmed that
further testing of the
proposed breakwater
layout will be carried out
ensuring the best possible
option is chosen and safety
of the facility users being
paramount.
New Year, New
Opportunities!
Is this your year of change? Did you
put your feet up over Christmas and
think about what 2021 might bring?
New house, new career, change of
direction? All of the above? We know
life is full of opportunities and change
is our constant companion. Some of us
embrace it and some are happy with the
status quo. Where do you fit in?
There is plenty of evidence to suggest
the real estate market is going to
continue to be buoyant at least for
the first part of the year. Interest
rates are still at an historical low and
are continuing to drop, Kiwis are
returning home in droves and there is
unprecedented demand for housing
in all price ranges. Multiple bidders at
auctions and multiple offers on deadline
sales are very much the norm in the
current market. Is this your year to sell?
Or, is this your year to enter real estate
as a career? If there was ever a time
to get into the business of real estate
then it has got to be now. Invariably at
this time of year we get enquiries from
people from all walks of life looking at a
change of career. If it is something you
have been contemplating or are keen to
know more about then we would love to
hear from you.
Surprise accolade for Sumner’s Finnish recruit
• By Chris Barclay
KALLE VALIMAKI has an
unexpected addition to his
sporting CV as he embarks on
his first pre-season with new
club Sumner, the promising
prop was surprised to learn he is
Finland’s latest rugby player of
the year.
Valimaki, who spent four seasons
with Methven in the Mid-
Canterbury competition before
targeting the step up to Christchurch’s
Metro Premiership in
2021, discovered last week he was
recognised in Finland’s equivalent
of the Halberg Awards.
“I woke up last Thursday and I
had a message from Dad (Simo)
saying: ‘Congratulations my son’
and I was like, my birthday was
in December’,” Valimaki said.
A quick scan of his old rugby
club’s facebook page confirmed
the accolade, meaning had he
been back in Helsinki – and
Covid-19 was not an issue – the
26-year-old would have been
mixing with elite ice hockey
stars, footballers and Olympic
class skiers.
Ultimately the gala was scaled
back so Valimaki, who works as
a chef in the Arts Centre, was
content to be back in Covid-free
Christchurch.
“It was a pleasant surprise, I
never got any heads-up,” said
Valimaki, who was introduced to
rugby as an 18-year-old.
He preferred indoor hockey
and football before a chance
meeting with a Dutch rugby
player at a party, who suggested
he had the build for the front
row.
“I remember my first training
session, it was in a horse stable in
the winter because it was -25 deg
C outside.
“I remember running into
contact for the first time thinking
this is pretty exciting. I just
fell in love with the sport.”
A specialist loosehead, Valimaki’s
Kiwi coach in Finland
encouraged him to further his
development in New Zealand
and he ended up in Methven in
early 2017, two years after debuting
for the national side.
“I didn’t really know where
Methven was but I had just
finished chef school and there
was nothing holding me back. I
TALENTED: Finnish international prop
Kalle Valimaki celebrated winning
the Watters Cup with Methven before
answering an SOS call from Sumner
late last season, the club he will play for
in 2021.
decided to overseas to play rugby
for a year and now I’m living
here permanently.”
Valimaki has 15 caps for
Finland, his most recent test was
in 2019 when he was flown to
Vienna for their first-ever test
with Austria.
“It was a round trip in a week
so I was pretty shattered, 30
hours there and 30 hours back,”
he recalled.
Still, the trip was worthwhile
as Finland edged the European
Nations Cup clash 32-29.
Valimaki also had a memorable
2020 once the global pandemic
curtailed a backpacking
trip around Europe with his
partner Emma Petersen.
They returned to New Zealand
from Italy via Finland last
March, enabling Valimaki to
feature in Methven’s triumphant
march to the Watters Cup.
Valimaki then learned Sumner
was struggling for numbers in
Christchurch’s Metro Premier
grade so he made himself available
at the tail end of a challenging
campaign.
“I played about five minutes off
the bench in Sumner’s last game
against Marist Albion. Even
though they had a tough season,
the atmosphere was good,” he
said, looking forward to contributing
to a resurgence.
Work commitments limit
Valimaki’s ability to catch Crusaders
or Canterbury games live,
though he does keep a watchful
eye on premier All Black loosehead
Joe Moody.
“I’ve actually met Joe, we had
a bit of a chat. We’re about the
same height, he’s a bit stockier,
which is understandable, he’s
a professional athlete. I was
sort of sizing him up,” he said,
acknowledging: “I’ve got a wee
way to go.”
Edith Cavell Corner
The beautifully refurbished gardens are ready to be enjoyed by Edith Cavell’s residents.
Gardens set for
the “Wow” factor!
Looking after Edith Cavell’s much-loved gardens is Head
Gardener, Dave Milne. A lot of his career was spent working
at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, one of the most
prestigious botanical gardens in the world.
Dave says he loves the atmosphere at Edith Cavell, “It’s so lovely
and quaint, and quiet with lovely surrounds.”
He’s excited about bringing lots of colour, brightness and joy to
the refurbished gardens at Edith Cavell. You may have already
noticed the new burst of colour at the entrance. “We really want to
bring the ‘Wow factor’ to the village gardens,” says Dave.
Dave says the established trees, such as the Weeping Elm and
Tulip Tree, are special features and he wants to build on the
existing garden by creating layers of canopies. He says the
gardens are a wonderful place for residents to walk around and
spend time in. “I want to make sure there’s year-round interest in
the garden. Something new and lovely to look at every month of
the year,” he says.
Dave also enjoys seeing what the residents in the villas do with
their own individual gardens,
“I’m all for it, and we’re always ready to help if they want anything
ripped out or moved.” Dave says the Sumner community will enjoy
the developments over the next months, including new gardens on
Dryden Street, “Watch this space!”
refurbishment.
HABITAT: Mt Pleasant School pupils learning about ecology during a
Encouraging a greater
emphasis on ecology
Dave Bryce of the Redcliffs/
group says it is focusing on
biodiversity and ecology
during January
WE ALL KNOW something
about economics, but
what do we know about
ecology?
Both words come from
the Greek word “oikos”
meaning “home”, in an
holistic sense.
Economics is the study
of the financial behaviour
of humans, as the
management of individuals,
households, cities or
nations.
Ecology, however, is the
study of the full behaviour
of all organisms on
earth over billions of years,
and yes, that includes us
humans.
Economics does not
include the contribution of,
or impact on nature, of all
human financial activities,
and fundamentally therefore,
leads to unsustainable
behaviour.
Ecology, however, is comprehensive,
is the basis of
many indigenous cultures,
and reflects how organisms
live sustainably with other
organisms and with earth’s
resources.
Surely, we should be
focusing much more on
ecology than we do?
Here are some ecological
principles to think
about, along with similar
old sayings from western
cultures:
1 Observe … note and
understand changes and
long-term implications,
before correcting. Slow
and steady wins the race.
2 Make sure all changes
are necessary, timely, selfregulating
and productive.
Necessity is the mother of
invention.
3 Catch, use, store, and
conserve, accessible renewable
energy … solar and
wind.
Make hay while the sun
shines.
4 Encourage diversity
… maximise the range of
species in systems (unlike
monoculture). Don’t put all
your eggs in one basket.
5 Encourage complexity
… for stability, by maximising
positive connections
(co-operation) and allowing
for negative connections
(competition). Many
hands make light work.
6 Recycle … value all
resources, respect natural
cycles.
Waste not, want not.
7 Respect natural organisms
and patterns …
they have evolved here for
reasons. The whole is greater
than the sum of the parts.
8 Encourage “edges” …
for greater productivity –
estuaries, forest margins,
tiered growing. Nature
knows best.
9 Evolve … use and
respond to changes, cooperation
and competition.
All of the flowers that bloom
tomorrow are in the seeds of
today.
10 Respect others …
people and other species,
we are all connected to
each other. One good turn
deserves another.
Our pledges on biodiversity
for 2021 are:
1 Plant your own native
habitat on your property,
or go to community native
tree planting and maintenance
days. Check each
week and note any new
creatures. Use “i-naturalist.
nz”.
2 Pull out and properly
dispose of all weeds on
your property.
3 Trap possums,
hedgehogs, rats, mice and
wasps on your property.
Free computing course
delivers unexpected benefits
A simple desire to become more confident
using computers has opened up a world of
possibilities for business owner Thomas King.
For the past 20 years, Thomas has been a codirector
of a logistics business. Over that time
he’s seen huge changes in the way business is
conducted.
“The world is rapidly changing and to keep
pace with it, having some confidence and
competence in computing is crucial,” he says.
“I realised that I’d have to embrace this scary
but exciting new tech-driven world sooner or
later, and now here I am today, loving what I
once feared.”
Thomas took his first steps in computing at
an Ara Connect community hub, one of several
in Christchurch. Each Ara Connect hub offers
free, non-assessed computing courses for
anyone wanting to gain skills and confidence
using digital technology.
Thomas says the tutors at Ara Connect
welcomed him warmly, made learning an
enjoyable experience and were very supportive.
“I felt so inspired during my journey and this
is a reflection of the good folk who work
at Ara. They’re very attentive and always
eager to assist. They want you to succeed
and they encourage you to push your
boundaries without ever throwing you in
the deep end.”
Discovering something new and amazing
every time he got on a computer was one
of the things Thomas enjoyed most about
his time at Ara. “There are some amazing
apps and software out there just waiting to
be discovered. I’ve especially fallen in love
with collaboration tools which can help me
complete a host of project management tasks.
What I learned was mindboggling and I realise
now that we haven’t even really scratched the
surface of these amazing tools and how useful
they can be.”
Having now completed a New Zealand
Certificate in Computing (Advanced User),
Thomas is considering further study and
possibly a complete career change. “I’m keeping
my options open but a future in IT is becoming
more likely for me with every passing day.”
His advice for anyone else considering
the computing courses at Ara Connect is to
just go for it. “You have the chance to add an
invaluable credential to your CV, and the Level
3 and 4 certificates are a great way to prepare
for further study in any subject. Knowing how
to use computers in a way that delivers results
can make life so much easier, especially in the
world of business. I certainly wish I’d taken
courses like these two decades ago. My advice
is to pluck up the courage and just go for it.”
Tasty Bites
Rest cooked meat before serving
There are very good
reasons for leaving meat
to rest. In the cooking
process, the proteins in
meat set, meaning that
the juices all go to the
middle and the outer
part effectively dries
out. When you rest the
meat it cools just enough
for those juices to be
redistributed and the
outside becomes moist
and tender again. For a
200gm piece of steak,
rest it for six to 10min.
Leave it uncovered in
a warm part of the
kitchen, perhaps over a
stovetop. Larger pieces,
such as roasts, rest for up
to 30min covered with
dies in prison and leaves Lex and her siblings the family home, she can’t
Wednesday January 20 2021
Toyota Hilux a ute for all the team
DURING THE summer months
my weekends start quite busy.
You see, I’m the coach of a team
of young cricketers, and watching
the 11 and 12-year-olds playing
sport and enjoying themselves is
something I’m very passionate
about.
It’s not always easy for the
parents to be transporting their
children to the games, and I’m
often picking up or dropping off
as circumstances dictate. Just
recently I had three boys to pick
up – and all of their kit, along
with my gear bag. Thankfully, I
was driving a double-cab Toyota
Hilux pick-up, the rear deck area
was well utilised and with four-up
inside we were all comfortable,
there’s as much space in a doublecab
ute as there is any modern
mainstream car.
There’s a new Hilux in dealers’
showrooms now and it has had
a fairly hefty makeover for 2021,
notably more power under the
bonnet, better economy, and a
heap of cosmetic changes that
continue to give the ute buyer
more of a traditional driving
experience.
The latest to come my way was
the range-topping SR5 Cruiser.
Hilux buyers of the past will relate
to the high-grade interior of the
SR5; the Cruiser adds even more
spec, it is high on fitment. Major
items to note are keyless entry
and ignition, satellite navigation
(8in touch screen), full leather
trim with heated front seats,
electrically adjustable front seats
and superb JBL audio. There’s
also a lot of cosmetic detail in the
Cruiser variant, there are piano
black trim details, charcoal and
matte black exterior trim items
and, of course, Cruiser graphics.
That’s a package that will lure
those who like their utes to stand
out in a crowd, it’s not overly
invasive visually but it will draw
attention, the test car was painted
black as well, and it showed real
presence.
A lot of the latter goes to down
to the big wheels, at 18in they are
an inch in diameter bigger than
its SR5 stablemate, and that also
has grip advantages.
All SR5 models are four-wheeldrive
capable, in-cabin switch
gear gives you a multitude of
options if or when you do leave a
sealed surface.
During my testing time I left
the highway just for a short burst
alongside the Waimakariri River,
there’s a nice track that runs
parallel for several kilometres,
but caution and awareness are the
key ingredients for many motorcyclists
fulfil their recreational
needs on those tracks.
Off-road the Hilux’s
mechanical elements provide
surety in the loose, and it is
RUGGED: The Toyota Hilux SR5 Cruiser can handle a
payload of around 940kg.
TOYOTA HILUX SR5 CRUISER: Working and recreational role.
competent and capable when
elevation is presented.
Just like the multitude of pickups
in this part of the market, the
Hilux gets a leaf spring-located
live rear axle. While this may
seem primitive it is by far the best
suspension for a load-bearing
model. It works pretty well, there
is a major articulation on uneven
ground and that gives the best
possible chance of keeping wheel
contact to the ground.
At city speeds the big Dunlop
Grandtrek tyres (265/60) soak
up the bumps and ruts, and
there are still plenty of those in
Christchurch, there is a little
jiggle over the worst of it but,
by and large, the suspension is
supple and absorbent and that’s a
combination hard to get right in
a model that is also destined for a
working role.
On that subject, the payload
capacity of the SR5 cruiser is
940kg, and like all Hilux models
will haul up to 3500kg on the
towbar.
Taking care of the load is
Toyota’s uprated four-cylinder
turbocharged diesel engine,
power is now up to 150kW from
130kW and, more importantly,
torque has been boosted to
500Nm from 420Nm, increases
of 15 per cent and 11 per cent
respectively and, what’s more,
the torque pattern has been
broadened providing much
greater mid-range response and
• Dimensions – Length,
5325mm; width, 1900mm;
height, 1815mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
2755cc, 150kW, 500Nm,
six-speed automatic
• Performance – 0-100km/h,
10.5sec
• Fuel usage – 7.9l/100km
pulling power.
Driving through a sixspeed
automatic transmission,
the engine feels willing and
comfortable, it doesn’t throb
unnecessarily, and even when
hauling to the red line it is well
boosted without turbo lag.
Not only has Toyota got the
engine to work with a broader
power spread, it is also far more
fuel efficient, by 11 per cent to
exact.
The 2755cc unit is now rated
with a combined cycle average
of 7.9l/100km compared to
9l/100km of the previous model.
By my calculations, over time
that would lead to considerable
savings if you are a user who
spends much time on a daily
basis behind the wheel.
When I took the Cruiser back
to the dealership the fuel usage
readout was sitting at 8.9l/100km,
which wasn’t that far distant to
Toyota’s claims, and was good
given that I spent a lot of distance
travelling and commuting at city
speeds. On the highway you can
expect a 7l/100km instantaneous
reading with the engine loping
over casually at just 1800rpm.
At highway speed the Hilux
cruises gently and isn’t a handful
when the long straights run
out. On 18in wheels there is
considerable steering feel, and
that’s a hard thing to get right
when there’s a host of rugged
mechanical elements sitting
underneath.
Composure in a corner is
acceptable and stability at the
rear end is enhanced due to a
comprehensive traction control
system.
Toyota has never sat back and
let sales take care of themselves.
As a company it is constantly
refining and further developing
product. The Hilux is a classic
example of that, and while
it gets the benefits of further
specification enhancements,
it has also had the mechanical
upgrades that will keep it as one
of the Kiwi favourites in the pickup
market.
With 17 models to choose
from there’s a truck for all
requirements, the SR5 Cruiser
tempting the discerning buyer,
one who likes just a little bit more
in a ute without going to hyper,
although I’m sure with Toyota’s
extensive aftermarket option
packages that could be arranged.
