Garden In the name of love Jo Arnell tracks down the most romantic blooms to treat someone special Flowers have, over the centuries, been given poetic and celebratory names and many have come to symbolise romance in all its forms. ‘A rose by any other name’ may well smell as sweet, but I can’t help thinking that it might smell a little sweeter if it had your own name on it, was given to you by your sweetheart, or because its name coincided with a special anniversary or event. We’ll gloss over the fact that back in the middle ages brides used to carry scented bouquets on their wedding day to disguise the fact that they hadn’t bathed for months, or that people carried ‘nosegays’ to counteract the smells in the street – and concentrate on the romance of flowers and the significance of some of those wonderfully romantic names and their associations. Say it with flowers The tradition of giving Valentine’s Day flowers dates back to the late 17th century, during the reign of King Charles II of Sweden. On a royal visit to Persia, Charles was introduced to a trend that was in vogue – the language of flowers. The idea centred on a person’s ability to communicate using flowers alone – no words need be spoken, as the flowers did the talking. The fad bloomed across the whole of Europe, as people passed around lists of flowers and their meanings. In the language of flowers, giving someone a yellow carnation meant they’d disappointed you, handing out purple hyacinths meant you were sorry and begging to be forgiven. The red rose, of course, was the signifier of deep and passionate love. Red roses are the most iconic of flowers for Valentines day. The red rose first emerged in Greek and Roman iconography, where it was associated with the most romantic of the gods, Aphrodite, or Venus, the goddess of love. According to Greek mythology (and who wouldn’t want to believe this?) rose bushes grew from the ground in a fertile mixture of Aphrodite’s tears and the blood of her lover, Adonis. There is a Floribunda rose called ‘Faithful’ that is a lovely deep red and flowers prolifically throughout the summer months – such a long-lasting way to say it with red roses. Traditionally planted bare-rooted in the dormant season – between November and March, a rose can happily be planted around Valentine’s Day. Planting a rose for someone is just as romantic a gesture, as sweeping in with a bunch of them in my opinion – perhaps a tad muddier. <strong>Feb</strong>ruary, more practically, is also the time to prune shrub and bush roses – any time from around the middle of the month until the beginning of March, depending on the weather. Prune back fairly hard to an outwardfacing bud, so that the bush is clear and open in the centre (a ‘goblet’ shape will allow for air to circulate around the plant and help prevent fungal diseases). A flowery Valentine Aptly named plants are fun to give and receive – there are plenty around with romance as a theme. Primula ‘Belarina Valentine’ bears clusters of dark red flowers that look sumptuous among its ruffled green leaves. This little primrose is perfect for growing in containers or planted out in a semi-shaded border, it will pop up every spring. The sunflower ‘Valentine’ is not a traditional bright yellow giant; it grows to about 5 feet and with delicate, pale lemony yellow outer sepals with a chocolate brown centre. They make great cut flowers too, each stem bears several flowers – so you’ll have plenty to gather and give to someone you love – only not on Valentine’s Day, as they flower in late summer. 129 priceless-magazines.com
