'Bro, just stop eating bread: ourancestors never did' is one of the mostcommon lines thrown around whenanyone talks about diets, health andnutrition online. Variations include, ‘nowheat’, ‘only sourdough’, ‘no sugar’,‘no fruit sugar’, ‘only raw honey’, ‘onlyeat meat’ and so on.The idea that there is an optimal orperfect human diet, stretching back tothe dawn of our species, is widelyaccepted, but no-one can agree what itreally means. Do we stop drinking milk,or just those without the genetics to doso? What about the Inuit? They onlyseem to eat meat and fat, so is that adiet we should follow?Even when I’ve presented evidence thatPaleolithic hunters and Mesolithicforagers ate wild grains, nuts androots, the response is often anger,mainly accusations that I don’tunderstand my subject or that huntersjust made use of them as a back-up incase hunting failed. The other extremeis that I must be defending eatingprocessed oil and pea protein sludge –a fine example of the nuance mostonline discussion displays.The reality is that several issues havebecome confused. The first is that thelast few decades have seen ancestraleating diets explode in popularity,including variations of the ‘Paleo’ dietand forms of ketogenic and nowcarnivorous diets as well.Many of these are well thought-outapproaches to increasing our healthand refusing the toxic gruel that mostWestern populations consume.However, these should not be confusedwith the archaeological andanthropological understandings ofhunter-gatherer diets.As any prehistorian will tell you, thereis no one standard hunter-gathererdiet, but many different ways ofmaking use of nearby resources. This isthe second issue: the evidence forancestral diets.So which is correct:the science or theanthropology?The third issue is the loose systems ofunderstanding around what should andshould not be consumed - ancestral,traditional, Lindy. Clearly coffee, wine,milk, chocolate, glycine and whey arenot foods found in the deep Ice Agepast, so we need heuristics to easilybypass the confusion of nutrition‘science’ and ‘peer-reviewed’ papers.Together, these three elements are notreadily combined. There is no evidencefor ancient hunters eating a carnivorediet; but it seems to really help today inthe short term. Eating domesticatedanimals is hardly paleo in the truesense; but are some animals goodapproximations for aurochs perhaps?Studies show that our microbiomesrespond positively to a diet rich indifferent plants, but some huntergatherersdon’t eat many plants at all.So which is correct: the science or theanthropology?MAN'S WORLD 110
