TV Host Dr. Laura
Berman’s Son, 16,
Dies of a Drug
Overdose
Relationship expert Dr. Laura Berman recently experienced
tragedy when her 16 year old son was poisoned by fake Zanax
pill laced with fentanyl and died. The pill was purchased by him
via the social media platform, SnapChat, when he was solicited
by a drug dealer .
Shockingly, it takes just four, tiny salt-like grains of fentanyl to kill
an adult. Sadly, Samuel Berman Chapman joins more than 230
victims poisoned by fentanyl every single day while 40 others die
from drug overdoses from drugs on a daily basis, as well. That’s
270 per day and 100,000 in 2020, alone!
We are asking you to join us in educating our country by
spreading awareness about fentanyl poisoning and the
opioid/drug epidemic. We have each other. Please volunteer to
make 10 calls and send 10 postcards!
A warm welcome to The Global Recovery Movement’s public health
crisis campaign, “Stop Fentanyl Poisoning and the Opioid Epidemic”!
We are asking you to commit to the power of 10 by making 10 phone
calls and sending 10 postcards to 10 local leaders including your police
chief that you either have or can develop relationships with. Since
warm introductions work best, if you know someone who knows your
Police Chief or Mayor, please ask them to introduce you or ask if you
can use their name when making the calls.
To help make this urgent campaign successful, it's important that you
keep these impactful numbers in mind:
270 a day or 100,000 in the past year alone young people are
dying every single day from Fentanyl poisoning and opioid
overdoses - 85% are from fentanyl poisoning
87,000 deaths in 2020
Over 100,000 deaths from Fentanyl and opioids are estimated
for 2021
2 tiny salt-like grains of Fentanyl can kill an adult
Fentanyl can make a person instantly stop breathing
Fentanyl is found in most illicit drugs and fake pills like
OxyContin, Xanax, Percocet, Adderall, Ecstasy and fentanyl
poisoning
PAARI (Police Assisted Addiction Recovery Initiatives) is a great
organization that you can introduce them to. Your leaders can
contact them by going to https://paariusa.org/police or
emailing info@paariusa.org. They will discuss how to start a
program and assist with executing the model in your community
for non - arrest pathways to recovery. PAARI is in 630 police
departments. The police and peer counselors follow up after
overdoses and encourage people to get treatment. They also
place willing people in treatment.
Think of yourselves as storytellers. The first story you are telling them
may be the loss of a loved one to fentanyl or other opioids.
Additionally, we ask you to invite another person to send 10 postcards
and make 10 calls, as well. There is strength in numbers and we
believe the power of 10 multiplied by every one of us committed to
reducing the number of overdose deaths in our country can do this
TOGETHER!
DO NOT LET YOUR CHILD DIE FROM FENTANYL.
WE ARE NOW LOSING KIDS AS YOUNG AS 12 YEARS OF AGE!
Dear Parents:
Operation Dunkirk is what we have dubbed our mission to reach our
nation’s local mayors, police departments and school boards in an effort
to help educate their residents about the immediate dangers of fentanyl
poisoning. This is happening NOW as I write to you.
Unbeknownst to many, fake pills along with most street drugs, such as
cocaine, meth, crack, cannabis, etc. can be laced with fentanyl and are in
circulation targeting teens.
As parents, we ask you to warn your children NOT to take anything from
anyone. This includes their peers! No pills, powders, drugs or even candy,
not even if it’s in the wrapper.
Your local leaders can use this information and share it via their
newsletters, social media, posters/programs in the schools along with
sitting down with local media to spread the word about these fake pills
and fentanyl poisoning. They can send our postcard or a version of it or
put it in their newsletters.
Here’s an analogy to help it make sense: If chicken was poisoned and we
didn’t know it, we would continue buying chicken. Once we did become
aware that it was indeed poisoned, we would steer clear of it. We must
adopt this same mindset and instill it within our children, teens and
young adults!
They don’t know about fentanyl’s existence and the perils of it including
instant death and/or severe brain damage. Sadly, it is easily available for
purchase via social media including SnapChat and Craig's List. Dealers are
on these platforms and can easily manufacture using a pill press
(available on Amazon). These pills can be made to resemble Xanax,
Oxycontin, Percocet, Adderall, Ecstasy and other meds and shipped
straight to your home just as Amazon packages are sent!
Because this can happen to any family we suggest having narcan on hand.
You have under 8 min. to save a teen. Narcan must be in our schools now.
It is a simple nose spray.
Parents like Dr. Laura Berman, who recently found her 16-year-old son,
Sammy, dead in his bedroom, are telling their stories daily. Sammy bought
the pill on Snapchat from a drug dealer and it was delivered to their home.
Additionally, Oregon recently lost four teens within 18 months from fake
pills laced with fentanyl. The alarming rise has driven Beaverton School
District to host a virtual community conversation, asap. Beaverton School
District Superintendent Don Grotting participated in a panel with law
enforcement and Multnomah County health experts because his campuses
are dealing with the harmful synthetic opioids. Grotting said that in the
past 18 months, fentanyl has had a deadly impact on their middle school
and high school students.
We ask you to please take part in The Global Recovery Movement’s and The
Pharmacist's public health crisis campaign. It requires 10 simple phone calls
and sending 10 pre-printed postcards (sent automatically) to get the
attention of your local leaders. Together, you can unite within your
city/town against fentanyl. This crisis needs more momentum and
attention to avert the imminent dangers that fentanyl poses. Just like the
country’s approach to resolving Covid-19, so must be the same diligence
put forth to battle fentanyl poisoning!
We urge you to log on to GRMovement.org and volunteer for Operation
Dunkirk - Public Health Crisis Campaign, today. You will help save our
teens!
The campaign has two parts. A phone call to ask permission to send a postcard,
then a follow up call a week later to make your asks. The campaign runs like this:
Action 1 - Day 1: Introduction call to warm contact (just sending postcards is not
enough - this is all about relationship building.)
Action 2 - Day 7: Follow up call - take next action, e.g. set meeting time, present at
town council or school board meeting - Plan an Overdose Awareness Day and
plant a Memorial Tree in remembrance of - rootingforrecovery.net to register your
Memorial Tree.
Make your asks - Support the Fentanyl Poisoning and Drug Epidemic Public Health
Crisis campaign. Our goal is to make as many people aware, globally, as we can
about this fast-moving global health emergency and that fentanyl is poison.
Hundreds of children under 12 are dying from fentanyl poisoning. Many, many
teens and young adults are taking fake pills with fentanyl thinking they are Xanax,
Oxycontin, Percocet, Adderall, and now Ecstacy. Most fake pills are pure fentanyl.
It only takes 2mg to kill an adult. Our entire illicit drug supply is laced with fentanyl
poison. We are losing an airplane full of kids every single day. That’s 250+ a day!
Four teens recently died from fake pills from the Beaverton School District in
Oregon. Another four died at Ole' Miss. this past January 2021 while seven were
miraculously saved.
Kindly call your 10 contacts and use this script:
Call 1: Prequalification/Introduction call: Write down the contact information
down as you go adding the person’s name who answers the phone.
Recipient: Ring ring ring… Hello?
GR Caller: Hi, this is Sally from The Global Recovery Movement, how is your day
going? With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?
Recipient: Hey, my name is John.
Continued
GR Caller: Thanks for taking my call, John. The reason I'm calling is that the
fentanyl poisoning and the drug crisis has taken hold and we are losing babies,
children, teens and adults at a rapid pace. We need to bring awareness
immediately to this public health emergency regarding these fake pills laced with
fentanyl, the ability for drug dealers to target our children via social media and
fatalities that are happening daily. This fentanyl crisis is the greatest threat to our
communities and families that we have ever faced and we desperately need your
help to warn the public of these dangers.
Did you know it only takes 2 mg of fentanyl to kill an adult and that close to 250
young people are dying every single day? 81,000 people have died in 2020 and
100,000 are estimated to die in 2021. That’s a 20% increase. We put together a
mailer that we would like to send. Whom, in your office, may I address it to?
Recipient: That would be Sandra Johnson.
GR Caller: Great, Sandra J-O-H-N-S-O-N? Okay, and her address is still: 123 XYZ
Street, ABS, NJ 11223? Awesome. Would you also share her email?
sjohnson@abc.com? Okay, I will send that card out today and follow up next
week, sometime. Would you please brief her on our conversation and let her
know it's on the way? Thanks for your time. Looking forward to working with all of
you in helping to make this very important information available to residents in
Call 2, seven days after the postcards are sent. Kindly refer to the notes you took
on the first call:
Recipient: Ring ring ring… Hello?
GR Caller: Hey John? Sally here. How are you, today? Glad to hear. Hey, is Sandra
in? I am following up on something I sent in the mail, last week.
Sandra: Hello?
GR Caller: Sandra, it is Sally with The Global Recovery Movement. I was
wondering if you were moved by the postcard on fentanyl poisoning, fake pills and
the drug epidemic that I sent you? The reason for my call is to ask you to support
The Global Recovery Movement’s mission to make everyone aware of the critical
action needed to stop fentanyl poisoning and the drug epidemic. This fentanyl
crisis is the greatest threat to our communities and families that we have ever
faced and we desperately need your help to warn the public of these dangers.
I was wondering if we could: (call to action based on their position) You don't have
to do all of this. You can simply send the postcard to your warm contact. These are
suggestions.
Mayor: Present the fentanyl poisoning and drug epidemic crisis at your next town
council meeting or put our educational postcards in the town newsletter or send
to residents. Your town or school district can print their own and send their own.
They can use our postcards for inspiration. We have made a video for your
presentations to make it easy. Plan an Overdose Awareness Day and plant a
Memorial Tree to honor our loved ones rootingforrecovery.net to register your
is imperative that we convey opioid addiction started from the overprescribing of
opioids to young people to deal with pain from wisdom teeth removal and
sports/other injuries. Parents must understand how easily kids have become
addicted to these pain killers rather than simply using an ice pack and Tylenol. This
method is sufficient for dealing with wisdom teeth removal. Start a
School/Community Coalition. Support the availability of Narcan in schools. These
fake pills are everywhere now. Kids are taking them to school. How highly
addictive opioids and, especially fentanyl, the most powerful opioid, are. And, that
fentanyl is in most illicit drugs now. No illicit drug is safe now. NJ has had SAC's -
Tips For Calling Your Local Leaders And
Police
If contacting your state’s Congress members, they can be reached through
the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. When you call, ask to be
connected to the office of your state’s legislator(s).
Other leaders in your city/town/county, can be Googled.
Think carefully about the reason for your call before you pick up the
phone. The goal is to clearly state what action you want your recipient to
take. The call will be brief, so you want to know exactly what you're asking
and the information you are sharing so you can get right to the point.
Identify yourself, make sure they understand that you are a concerned
voter and tell the aide you would like to leave a brief message, for
example: "Please tell Senator/Representative (Name) that I support the
USA FLIP, moving treatment from the criminal justice system to the
healthcare system and would like to discuss the subject further with
her/him/them. I would also like to discuss planting a Memorial Tree in our
town/city/state with (Name) in remembrance of the one million loved ones
who have died from this man-made opioid epidemic.
Ask to speak with the aide who handles y
our issue. If you want to do more than leave a simple message, you want
to make sure you're talking to the person who works on the issue. Usually,
a staff member, not the specific leader you are calling, will take your
telephone calls. Make clear your position and the action you think your
member should take. Feel free to ask questions and share information
about your issue, but be concise and considerate.
Global Recovery Movement Email: info@grmovement.org
23
Do’s and Don’ts
Do
State your name, address and
telephone number so they know
you are one of their constituents
Carefully plan a strategy; be
specific and ask for action
Voice your position and solicit
support from your legislator
Don't
Burn bridges
Waste time
Lie
Know your issue, and tell the truth
Always be punctual, polite, and
patient
Follow-up: Write a thank you note
Exaggerate statistics
Make promises you can't deliver
Be argumentative
Global Recovery Movement Email: info@grmovement.org
24
Remember:
Timing is very important. If the legislation you are concerned
about is imminent, contacting your legislator quickly by phone or
email can be very effective. However, if you have time, take
advantage of several influence techniques, such as writing a
letter, or meeting with your elected Members of Congress and/or
their staff members. The key is to use timing to your advantage.
Meet with staffers. Staffers are the key to getting work done. It
is important to develop a working relationship with staffers who
are assigned to your issue. When it comes time for action,
knowing someone to call will pay off. The key is to develop a
network that can put your action into play.
Voice your position. Legislators frequently act on behalf of their
constituency, even if your legislator does not currently support
your position it can be extremely helpful to contact them. Make
your concerns vocal, and solicit support from your community
leader.
Know the issue. Legislators and local leaders have several
issues they are concerned with at any given time. Be sure that
you have ready information based on sound, scientific research.
Ask questions about your leaders' feelings toward a particular
issue, and be ready for your legislators to ask you questions
about your position. Knowledge is power.
THE PORTUGAL MODEL during their opioid epidemic in 1999:
400 overdose deaths per year reduced to 34
900 HIV/AIDS deaths reduced to 18
100,000 IV drug users reduced to 500
Held these numbers for 20 years
Michigan is the same size as Portugal, but, sadly, had 2,600 overdose
deaths in 2019. In 2020, overdose deaths shot up more than 20 %!
Support legislation for a physician-led, Command-Center approach
just like Portugal’s.
Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio uses a Command-Center
approach. They publish overdose deaths in real time. They have
successfully cut their overdose death numbers in half, making it the
only county in the USA, pre-COVID-19, to do so.
Vermont is our most successful state! They have cut overdose deaths
by 25%. They accomplished this with the police referring and taking
people to treatment and lowered barriers to prescribing
buprenorhine and Narcan, everywhere.
Highly addictive, fentanyl is 80-100 times stronger
than morphine and 30-50 times stronger than
heroin.
Within minutes of ingesting, fentanyl can cause
breathing to completely stop.
85% of all overdose deaths are from fentanyl
poisoning.
Many victims have no idea fentanyl is in their illicit
pills or drugs.
250 young Americans will die today from fentanyl
poisoning and overdoses.
Deaths are up 27%, an all time high. Over 100,000
deaths expected in 2021.
Celebrate Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31 - ask your
town/county to lower flags
Share prevention information in your town newsletter about
fentanyl poisoning, fake pills, how highly addictive opioids like
OxyContin, are and information on overdose and fentanyl poisoning
deaths in your town or county.
Place Student Assistance Counselors in the Schools and Community
(NJ has had them for 30 years - http://asapnj.org)
Start a Municipal Alliance (Community Coalition with leaders, police
and parents) and fund the grass roots with drug fine money for
school and community prevention programs - as NJ has done for 30
Why is OREGON our HOPE?
The Oregon Model (Bill 110) is pretty much a copy of the Portugal Model.
It began Feb. 1, 2021. The way it works is $100M from marijuana tax
money will be deposited solely for treatment and recovery services in
October into Oregon's coffers. Money that is desperately needed
for immediate treatment and medicines (MAT's).
We can give you every stat possible about why the proven Portugal
Model works. However, we won’t know Oregon’s stats until a year from
now.
WHERE IS THE HOPE?
Oregon is our new experiment. By simply not arresting users for small
amounts of drugs, Oregon will flip addiction from the wrong system -
criminal justice to the right system - healthcare.
Two Scenarios:
CLOSE YOUR EYES #1
Your son or daughter is picked up with drugs (under a 10-day supply.)
Your child will end up with a felony, which carries a 1-10 year sentence to
prison and a lifelong record in most states. Your child could be thrown in
a jail cell without withdrawal or craving medicines and die. Or, go to
prison and die on their way out the door from overdose because their
bodies can not handle the powerful drugs after an abstinence period. If
your child wants treatment, there are waits for beds and very little long
term treatment. Your child's chances of dying now in our system are 90%
from addiction or fentanyl poisoning.
Continued
CLOSE YOUR EYES #2
Your son or daughter is picked up with drugs (under a 10-day supply.) In
Oregon, your child will be given a citation with a $100 fine and receive a
phone number with a 24/7 hotline. The $100 fine is waived if your child
receives a medical evaluation to determine if they have an addiction.
Your child can get help or treatment immediately or reject it without any
penalty. If your child needs withdrawal or cravings medication they can
go to the emergency room right away without fear. If your child rejects
help they will just pay the $100 fine.
Your child may not be ready for treatment. With this system in Portugal
83% accept the help or treatment and only 5% ever return.
These common scenarios are killing 270 kids a day in America. The land
of the free. Now your child is a criminal on top of having a life
threatening disease and the risk of fentanyl poisoning. Climbing this
mountain when you are suffering is way too hard if not impossible.
Possession for small amounts usually do not end up in the drug courts.
We will still have drug courts for more serious offenses. But, why not get
people help earlier? At the beginning of their addiction. On their first
brush with the law.
Studies show that treatment works best when a person chooses to get
treatment. Not when they are hammered into it.
Global Recovery Movement Email: info@grmovement.org
Continued
Which scenario would you choose for your beloved child?
We will have the verdict when Oregon works.
We already have the verdict on Portugal. Portugal stopped their heroin
epidemic 20 years ago. Overdose deaths declined by 90% in a couple of
years. They have held their overdose death numbers for 20 years. In 2019
Portugal had 34 overdose deaths - Michigan had 2600. Michigan and
Portugal are the same size. Portugal's prison population (with people
incarcerated with this disease) is 75% less. The savings go into treatment.
Portugal uses their National Lottery money to pay for this. We are the
richest country on earth. We will beat Covid quickly. We found the money
for that. Help us flip the system.
