NOTE 

Welcome to the 2021 Summer Edition of The Silent Review, 

your FAAA member e-magazine. 

In this edition we farewell many of our FAAAmily to voluntary redundancy. Inside the 

magazine, we celebrate their time with a collage of photos from favourite memories . 

With this in mind, I ask all members from every work-group to provide us with interesting 

articles for the next release of Autumn 2021. Whether you are QCCA, QAL International 

or Domestic, ALTARA, COBHAM, QD, JETSTAR, REX, Virgin Australia or any other work 

group in the FAAA, we would love to publish and share your interesting story. 

This edition salutes one of our favourite members, Paula Hardwick. Paula is known by 

many for her heart of gold, always dedicating so much of her personal time and giving to 

those in need. 

Sarah de Wilt shares thoughts and other senses crew experience in a couple of quite 

unique and fun articles, all being a little too familiar! Plus, Julian Groneberg shares some 

perspective and insight for all of us who are facing the challenges of being “grounded.” 

We have a few more additions to our directory of crew businesses. Keep them in mind 

when needing a service and support one of our own!

MESSAGE FROM THE 

SECRETARY

We start 2021 with hope that the events of 2020 will fade and become a distant 

memory, that we all regain some normality and find ways back to the lives we 

enjoyed before the pandemic took over the world. 

We are farewelling one of the largest VR groups 

of members in history, not just from our Qantas 

colleagues but our Virgin family as well. Some have 

made the decision to leave jobs they love earlier 

than they may have normally considered and some 

were given little choice considering the Aviation 

Industries ‘annus horribilis’ and the sale of Virgin. 

Whilst we say goodbye to so many, we cannot 

lose focus on those who are staying. The FAAA is 

committed to ensuring that those of you who stay 

retain and improve the pay and conditions that 

have been achieved by hard work and negotiations. 

There cannot be a relaxing of resolve as we see 

the airlines we work for looking for ways to strip 

conditions, using Covid19 as the reason. We will 

defend any opportunist attempt to reduce your 

conditions for the future and ask that you stay 

engaged with us. 

Amongst all of the above, many of you will have 

been following the Jobkeeper appeal closely. 

Whilst the Federal Court’s interpretation was in our 

favour, the Full Federal Court ruled 2 against one 

in favour of the way Qantas interprets the Jobkeeper 

legislation. We now continue fighting for our 

members by applying to the High Court to review 

the decision. This process is not fast and we will 

need to be patient until we get an outcome. 

On behalf of the Industrial staff and your elected 

officials, I would like to thank all those leaving for 

being such a loyal and united group. With your 

support we displayed solidarity and achieved great 

outcomes. For those continuing with your careers as 

first responders we are your voice, we will be here 

to support you and fight for you. 

To all , I hope that 2021 offers a year of hope, 

health and flying opportunities for you all and for 

those who have hung up their wings , may you find 

peace and good luck with what’s next.

CREW IN FOCUS 

Paula has been an Energiser bunny - 

both on board and as a volunteer and 

consistent contributor to Facebook pages 

to keep our spirits up over the past year. 

Whether she's dressing up for volunteering 

in a sari or wearing a pretty much a scarf 

and a smile, we know it's people like Paula 

that make the FAAA and QF what it is. 

Paula's love for her crew time on the Jumbo expresses, 

what we wish we could put in words: 

‘You were my other home with my crew I would regard as 

family, making new friends in different ports – sometimes 

not speaking the same language but our mother you 

brought us together. You transported me to amazing 

places: London, New York, San Francisco, Rome, Paris, 

Vancouver, Honolulu, Fiji, Bombay, Bahrain just to name 

a few, where I would explore, share 

meals, have crew room parties, dance, 

share our community spirit. The first 

time when you embraced me was as a 

child, travelling with my Dad Paul – a 

chief steward with Qantas. I thought 

he knew everyone in the whole world 

as everywhere we went: airports, 

hotels, planes people knew him. It was 

exciting, fun... we always dressed up to 

fly. You bought the world closer, crew 

together. If the joy, laughter, love that 

we shared within you remains you will 

be just filled with LOVE.’ 

Her work with Orange Sky Mobile Laundry, Meals on 

Wheels and QCCT has kept her motivated – especially 

through the rollercoaster of 2020, garnering her National 

Volunteer Week: Volunteer of the Year! ‘I’m just a worker 

bee with lots of hives. I do what I do to help my amazing 

co-ordinators bring joy, dignity, health, education to people 

in my community, plus The Philippines and Johannesburg.’ 

Orange Sky provides mobile washing facilities to people 

who are in emergency housing, homeless or can not afford 

the cost of the laundromat. ‘I personally have found that 

being of service has made it easier to navigate the 

dark days.’ 

At 8 years of age, Paula told her dad that she decided to 

become a flight attendant so she could ‘sit in bars, talk to 

boys and go to Disneyland’. Goals. In her wise 

closing words: 

I want to thank all the amazing people I’ve been honoured 

to work with. 

The super heroes in the FAAA – the 

team who have been working more 

than any human could. 

The most loving QCCT team – 

particularly Manila, Joburg and 

Mumbai teams that I’ve had my most 

rewarding moments from flying. 

Last but no means least: my crew, who 

some only meet once, others many 

times who have made my career one 

that dreams are made of. 

Shared so many adventures, memories, catastrophic 

hangovers but shared one thing: 

When away we are ONE. 

Wearing the Qantas uniform I knew that I belonged to a 

unique workforce that in spite of dramas, delays, would 

pull together as one. 

I always felt proud and special that I – Paula Hardwick 

– was a Qantas Flight Attendant. Stay strong – more 

adventures & good times in the future. Stay safe, be in the 

moment, be kind to yourself.’

NEW INDUSTRIAL 

REFORM BILL

Federal Parliament has introduced a new bill 

that proposes to amend the Fair Work Act, 

if it becomes law. We are campaigning against 

this bill with other unions, as we are concerned 

this could be an attack on workers’ rights. 

We will be writing to the federal cross bench Senators 

to urge them to reject the Bill in its current form. These 

Senators could be key to preventing this bill becoming 

law. We urge our members to write to their senators 

and express their concern with the changes and you 

hope they will vote against the bill in the current form.

ENTERPRISE AGREEMENTS 

Better off overall test (BOOT) 

The IR Bill inserts a definition of a casual as an employee 

appointed as such rather than a person who works on a 

casual basis. It seeks to overturn recent Federal Court 

cases that held an employee with an advance commitment 

to work is not a casual. e.g. Casuals who receive 

regular rosters. 

Further, an employee who is labelled as a casual by their 

employer and paid a loading who is later found to not 

be a casual will have that loading offset against any 

future underpayment claims in respect of entitlements 

like annual leave. In addition, while the IR Bill provides 

that an employer must offer to convert a casual to 

permanent if they have worked a regular pattern of hours 

for at least 6 months of the previous 12 months they are 

not required to make this offer if there are reasonable 

grounds not to make the offer, such as there will be 

significant changes or the hours will be significantly 

reduced which means that this obligation is not worth the 

paper is written on. Further, there is no arbitration of these 

claims. Many casuals simply would not ask to become 

permanent due to fear of repercussions. 

FLEXIBLE WORK DIRECTIONS 

Under the current laws if your employer is receiving 

JobKeeper they can issue what are called JobKeeper 

enabling directions, which can allow a change of duties 

and location regardless of the terms of your contract of 

employment or enterprise agreement. 

The IR Bill seeks to allow employers under certain Modern 

Awards the ability to access these flexible work directions 

on the basis that it will ‘assist the revival of the enterprise’ 

for two years. While the Aircraft Cabin Crew Modern 

Award is not on the list it can be added by the Minister 

through regulations. 

Currently enterprise agreements need to pass the Better 

off Overall Test (BOOT) to be approved by the Fair Work 

Commission. That is, they have to be better off overall 

compared to the relevant Modern Award. 

The bill proposes to loosen this requirement and in some 

circumstances for enterprise agreements to be able to be 

approved without meeting the BOOT test. If passed this 

could severely undercut workers’ pay and conditions. 

Representation 

Currently employers must take all reasonable steps to 

give notice to employees of the right to be represented 

by a bargaining representative through the issue of 

what is called the Notice of Employee Representational 

Rights (NERR). 

The IR Bill seeks to remove that requirement and only 

requires the NERR to be posted on the Fair Work 

Commission website up to 28 days after bargaining 

commences rather the current 14 days. 


PART TIME WORKERS 

The IR Bill proposes what is known as a simplified 

additional hours agreement, for identified Modern 

Awards. As mentioned before the Aircraft Cabin Crew 

Modern Award is not included on the list at this point but 

could be added later by Regulation. What this means is 

that contrary to current conditions, additional paid hours 

would be paid at ordinary time rather than overtime 

with some exceptions. 

We urge our members to participate in the campaign 

against this horrible bill and write to your Senators to 

request they vote against the bill in the current form!

ME TO BE HUMBLE

There is little doubt that the life of an International Flight Attendant can be pretty flashy. 

Jet setting across the globe, life in different ports, always a new location. You don’t need to 

tell crew twice about embracing these perks. Our little bubble gave us everything we needed. 

Friends, travel, adventure and what we thought was a very reliable income. 

It was a life we had become 

accustomed to with freedoms and 

benefits our job gave us. How many 

times did you hear crew talking, 

almost nonchalantly about how they 

are in Santiago this week and going to 

go to the Andes for a ski trip on their 

layover? About how they scored a 

96 hour slip, with a plum allowance. 

About how next week they are going 

to rent a car and head to the desert to 

attend Coachella on their LA pattern? 

Then there were those Instagram 

poolside selfies with a cocktail in 

hand proclaiming that ‘they love 

getting paid for this right now’ while 

those at home follow along. How 

many ever considered that talking 

about this in front of others who don’t 

have the same privileges can actually 

be a little bit crass? 

Even though we all know it’s a tiring 

job with many downsides, the one 

thing the pandemic has shown us is 

that we did have it pretty good. We 

checked into a hotel and collected 

some foreign currency without even 


thinking about it, free from any 

attachment back home, literally having 

a breather. We often complained 

when our rooms were too close to the 

lifts. I should know, I was one of them! 

Then suddenly, almost a year ago, 

our lives and our lifestyles as we 

knew them came crashing down. No 

allowances, no more day 29 pay, no 

more of any of it. 

We were left to fend for ourselves 

and despite some very generous 

government support,(still ongoing 

almost a year later) our lifestyles, 

worlds, and our disposable incomes 

just got a lot smaller. What were 

we going to do now? What were 

we if we weren’t always flying and 

travelling? What made us interesting 

to others now? 

What I learned in the ‘real world’, 

and in some ways I knew this all 

along, is that most people who don’t 

fly don’t really care that you are a 

flight attendant and go here there and 

everywhere. The new co workers we 

have met in secondary employment 

can’t relate. Many of them could 

only dream of the kind of privileges 

we enjoyed, particularly the amount 

of days off we have for the hours 

we worked. Quite justified though, 

for the physical stress our bodies 

endured. 

In the four jobs I’ve held since stand 

down I’ve been shocked, and still am, 

at how little employees get, and how 

they are treated in other workplaces. 

This experience has highlighted the 

importance of Unions and how the 

FAAA has protected many conditions 

and privileges that we have which 

were fought for over many years by 

our predecessors. 

I also realise how much less you need 

than you thought, and how freeing 

that can be. 

It was a massive identity crisis, and 

reality check, but as the months went 

by and things improved and fell into 

place, I realised what really mattered. 

It wasn’t the flashy stuff, but the 

blessings I still had, if not my job that 

I still yearn for. I had secured another 

job. I had a roof over my head. I was 

safe. I was loved. 

There is so much more to any of us 

than a job title anyway. If nothing else 

this year, I have learned this; What 

matters is the kind of person you are, 

not what you do or where you go, 

what you have or the kind of lifestyle 

you can showcase on your socials. 

Simple stuff. The pandemic literally 

and figuratively brought me back 

down to earth and reminded me to be 

humble. If I return to flying one day, 

which I hope to, I pray that myself 

and the crew community as a whole 

can take some of this new found 

graciousness with us.

THE FLIGHT OF DISCOVERY

Operating to Dubai, I remember the captain explaining over the speakers how stable 

the A380 flies. He asked everyone on-board if they notice the liquid ripples in their glass. 

Of course, there were no ripples because the aircraft computers fix even the slightest 

disturbance over the airframe. 

Often I think about that 

flight and how profound 

the captain’s statement 

was. Imagine if we had a 

computer that could fix 

disturbances in our life? 

We do! 

22 years in aviation have 

passed in the blink of an 

eye. If I’m lucky, I’ll have 

a few more to reconfigure 

that computer. 

For many years I’ve been 

working as a Buddhist 

prison chaplain. I 

remember arriving back 

As Buddhists we call 

this kind of compassion 

Bodhicitta. The intention 

to awaken in life in order 

to help others awaken 

in life. 

My work is to counsel, 

support and guide 

inmates in maximum 

security with the 

altruistic and ethical 

teachings of Buddhism. 

Through mindfulness 

techniques, reflection 

and contemplation, we 

learn to understand that 

computer – our mind. 

Some would argue, the 

Buddha was the world's 

best cognitive therapist.

fatigue. You all know it! 

Inmates would tell me how tired I 

looked. I was driven by compassion. 

Reconfiguring the 

mind isn’t easy. In my 

years of practising 

meditation, I can say 

with absolute certainty, 

it works. I’ve learnt to integrate 

traditional mindfulness meditation and 

contemplative skills in a therapeutic 

way that can be applied to anyone. 

I’m not a very fancy Buddhist. Often 

in a cap, jeans, a tee and Nike's, 


looking just like everyone else. We all 

appreciate authenticity and inmates 

notice it too. 

Working as a chaplain I have 

tremendous responsibility to support 

without bias. Witnessing one's 

suffering is incredibly sacred because 

so many of us hide our wounds. When 

we have the skills to transform and 

heal from within, we begin to thrive in 

a world that’s often so confusing. 

Most people view Buddhism as 

a way of life and because of our 

open, compassionate and inclusive 

approach, I help to support and meet 

people where they’re at. 

Mindfulness techniques, understanding 

the nature of mind and being aware 

of negative thoughts helps reconfigure 

the way you live.

As humans, that’s our job. Meditation,

when our emotions become too 

powerful, only then can we pull back, 

so it doesn’t consume us. Giving 

ourselves a pep talk along the way. 

Knowing our triggers and finding 

the root cause is life changing 

mind-training. 

I’m passionate about making those 

tools available to anyone, so they 

can live a happier, calmer and 

compassionate life. 

Today, I’m Australia’s first full-time 

Buddhist chaplain within Corrections.
