2 WINTER EDITION 2021

EDITOR’S
NOTE
Well, here we are again, another series of lock downs around
Australia, which has now resulted in a reduction of flying both on
an international and domestic front.
What does this mean? More time for reading the Silent Review 2021 Winter Edition!
In this edition we give you a little background into Crew Buddy and how one of our very
own developed this platform, helping crew with studying for Emergency Procedures.
We welcome Elisha Pritchard as an author who covers a plethora of emotions we have
all been experiencing over the last seventeen months. Julian Groneberg “Talks the Talk”
in his article whilst our Federal Secretary, Teri O’Toole, draws our minds to one of the
most challenging industrial periods of Australian aviation history, EBA 11 for our Qantas
International members.
Our long serving industrial officer Steven Reed writes about why it is so important to be
a FAAA member and reviews many of the hard fought conditions won and preserved
over the years.
We also learn more about Lisa di Brazzá, FAAA Vice President International elected
official, in our Let me be Frank series. Many of our International crew will have spoken
with Lisa as a FAAA Member Support Officer.
Don’t forget to look through our member business directory. If you need a “tradie” or
other service, please use one of your fellow FAAA members’ and support one of our own.
There are the usual discount offers with a new 20% discount offer on hair care products
for members to make use of, plus new offers available from RT Health, the not-for-profit
health fund.
A huge thanks you to Lisa Vandenberg for providing us with the cover page pictures.
The pictures were taken from one of the Qantas Olympic Charters.
We hope this reading draws your mind to the community you are used to being part of.
Please reach out to each other in these times and stay connected.
Enjoy the read and stay safe!
WINTER EDITION 2021 3

MESSAGE FROM THE
SECRETARY
By Teri O’Toole – Federal Secretary
In this edition of our cabin crew magazine, we draw your attention to
EBA 11 negotiations for Qantas International cabin crew.
Airlines should not be using the Covid-19 pandemic to
attack your EBA conditions. History is repeating itself where
the only group to benefit are management. Whether it
was the GFC or oil prices, there was always something the
company would use to seek the sympathy of its employees.
Don’t fall for the company crying poor!
We have experienced several wage freezes over the years
with the company going on to make record profits! Let’s
not forget the $2000 “bogus bonus” you are still waiting
for. Some of you, now associate members, will never see
the “bogus bonus”, yet contributed to the $2 billion dollar
profit. Having taken VR, you will never see that bonus, even
though the money was set aside.
As always, the company will want its front-line workers to fall
on their swords and take a financial hit! Let’s face it, flying
will eventually come back and people will be desperate to
get on planes, ultimately resulting in the company making
record profits very quickly. Only recently, EOFY June 2021,
we witnessed Qantas Domestic recording a profit.
The FAAA are here to represent your interests. This is the
time when all crew need to stick together to achieve the
best outcomes for everyone and their future. Whilst it may
seem that only one work group is under siege, this is not
true. Any changes to Part 1 will make the company millions
and will forfeit the benchmark of what Part 2 crew can
get to. These benchmark conditions are years of tough
negotiations, which we need to hang onto. EBA10 saw the
new FAAA team gain conditions for Part 2 without losing
anything for Part 1.
The standard of hotels, your allowances, your rest times,
the hours you work per month and the pay you receive are
all up for grabs. There needs to be significant negotiating
around these items. Members need to take time and
understand what is being offered, to understand you have
rights in the bargaining process and not rush into anything.
Consideration must be given that any changes will impact
your career which may span for the next 10-20 years.
We believe the company thinks you will be so desperate to
get back to the job you love, that you will agree to anything.
The worst thing you can do is blindly agree to conditions
that will have a huge impact on your future when flying
and the world is back to normal. We are here to negotiate
the best deal possible, reveal the truth and pull back the
veil on what the company will say. We know what you are
WORTH and require your support to ensure that you are
treated fairly as professionals. Remember, you can love your
job and career, however you must also stand up and unite
with your colleagues to get what you deserve.
The FAAA has always assisted the company in tough
times but we will not allow for permanent changes to your
conditions based on a temporary crisis we know will come
to an end. We do not believe these international border
closures will continue forever and we can already see the
world is slowly starting to open back up.
You have all waited patiently and helped out where possible
with repatriation and bubble flying. Many have also been
forced into other jobs in order to keep your homes and
possessions. You have done it tough! Loyal cabin crew have
already suffered more than can be explained and YOU can
NEVER recover losses of the last 17 months.
Soon we will be issuing a FAAA members survey which
will form the basis of our negotiating. Anyone who is not
a member will not be able to complete the survey and
therefore not have a voice, hence the importance of being a
FAAA member.
I wish everyone well and even though many of our staff are
working remotely during lock downs, we are still available
to help so do not hesitate to contact us as normal.
Best wishes and stay connected with each other.
WINTER EDITION 2021 7

CREW BUDDY
– ADAM WOOD –
by Sarah de Wilt
Councillor – International QCCA
‘Crew Buddy’ has become an EP’s lifeline for the vast majority of our flying
colleagues. Let’s meet the mind behind the man behind the magic!
Adam Wood’s connection with aviation starts back in his
early days: heading to London town on his English father’s
passport. Adam’s dad had seen a cabin crew ad in the
paper. The enticing perks of staff travel sealed the deal and
a life in aviation was hatched! With a pretty sweet roster of
six days on, three days off and confirmed staff travel seats
(!!), it was realistic to see as much of Europe as possible
and make the most of free days.
Adam went from Ezyjet to
Jetstar International. With
QF, he has been a QCCA
FA, CSS, CSM then CPM.
With a position in the ‘QF
Cabin Safety Team’, Adam
went ‘crew to ground’ for
five years. He was able to
fly month on and be on
the ground every alternate
month. Adam has also
been spending pandemic
life working on the COVID
Support Team.
Adam has always liked IT
and been drawn to tech
gadgets. Their family was an
early adopter of dial-up and
his dad was an online trainer in the maritime sector. Adam
was introduced to transport policies and procedures as he
worked on a family dolphin/whale watch boat in beautiful
Port Stephens in a former life.
With support from his CPM at the time, Adam started an
invaluable resource that for many crew is synonymous
with passing - and feeling reassured about - EPs. Content
was gleaned from his own study notes and collaboration
with colleagues and close friends. All groups are included
– MAM and London base too. It’s an inclusive product
aimed at helping all, that benefits all - plus our passengers.
Adam was given the Excel Award in 2018 for his service to
colleagues – completely deserved in my opinion!
The online quizzes are up to date as Adam reads new
CSOs and amends questions ASAP. He states that Crew
Buddy is not the ‘be all and end all’ in a study approach
but is another study tool – one that readily identifies gaps
for revision then success.
Crew use the app either just
before EPs or through the
months to keep EPs sharp
(this is my perennial crew
year’s resolution). They
can grab a few minutes to
dip in at school pickup,
or have even been known
to praise the quizzes to
Adam poolside in Jakarta.
Surprisingly to me, crew
mostly use the app on
their phones. It’s especially
handy to access the one
page study note summaries
and screen-shot them.
Adam has received really
genuine feedback from crew. One member made the effort
to get his personal number and phoned him directly to tell
him that Crew Buddy relieves her anxiety and had made
all the difference to her EPs recurrent exams. Once, Adam
was on a transatlantic cruise: New York to London via
Portugal – and had no reception for four days. On arrival,
he was flooded with messages – the app had crashed as it
was so popular!
WINTER EDITION 2021 11

GIVEN TO FLY
by Elisha Pritchard
There have been moments over the past 15 months where I’ve strongly doubted
whether or not a call would ever come. Moments where my innate pull to fly
felt like a substantial burden that if not suppressed, would regularly pull me under
while I struggled to adapt to a new life in retail. Therefore, when my phone rang
back in May, it couldn’t have come as a bigger shock; my voice echoing in my
ears as I clumsily searched for the words to express my deep-seated gratitude.
So, it surprised me that on hanging up the phone, fear and
doubt began to settle in immediately and I found myself
irrationally taking inventory of the ways in which I couldn’t
make it work. As I fought hard to catch the dislodged pieces
of my own sudden upheaval, I realised with jarring certainty
that I simply didn’t feel ready. Yet given the severity of the
year behind me, perhaps I never would be. After spending
a year building a life around the safety and predictability of
home, I wasn’t sure if I was emotionally ready to re-adjust
my internal axis so abruptly. In the same breath, it also
dawned on me that when my world shrank, my confidence
had too. That as my world became more insular, anxiety
started to curl itself around me like a thorny tendril and, as
time continued, it was becoming increasingly difficult to
break free.
‘How dramatically would things be different?‘
‘Could I successfully manage two jobs?’
‘After all this overarching mayhem, would I even
remember how to be ‘me’ again?’
To the caller on the other end of the line, it simply
wasn’t possible to convey how much my heart ached
to fly after a year of trying to convince myself that it
didn’t matter. A necessary act of self-preservation, born
from the wilful desire to protect my head from the
vulnerability of my heart.
These were the thoughts that kept me awake at night in
the days before my first flight to Perth. Fears which
had manifested themselves gradually, while I found myself
pre-occupied in the discovery of new meaning and
self-reinvention.
As it turns out, the answer to these questions never even
mattered. What mattered was my capacity to push through
the unknowns, ‘what-ifs’ and half-forgotten things, knowing
that my confidence was waiting to greet me on the other side.
That the pull of who I used to be would be enough to coax
me out of the depths of my apprehension and headlong
into anticipation.
On the morning I returned to work, the Earth heaved
slowly back to life. Uniform. ASIC, Galley Guide, Service
Brief, Taxi, Coffee. Familiar tasks, once ordinary in their
routine, now possessing an element of alchemy in their
completion. The kinaesthetic sensation of a waiters-cloth
in hand, wine rack, silver service utensils; the tangible
feeling of their weight discovering poignant new meaning.
The sound of a closing atlas box, shifting of a service
cart, the click-clack groan of ovens roaring to life; these
familiar sensory triggers all contributing towards my ability
to triumphantly step back into myself. Fear and anxiety
instantly exhausting their ability to contain me, as tactile
reminders of who I used to be, willed me back to life.
And then of course there’s the crew.
The immediate and all-encompassing
acceptance of a workforce eager to
embrace each other’s unique colourfulness.
The simple act of being together again,
amplified by a sense of intrinsic belonging
that was never truly lost. Each and every
one of us carrying a story of how we’ve
been tenacious, deft and brave in the face
of overwhelming adversity. As a result,
it’s simply impossible not to marvel at each
other’s resilience and ability to withstand even the most
severe of life’s turbulence. The camaraderie, friendship and
solidary, solidifying my own sense of instinctive belonging.
Only yesterday, the tremendous joy of being perched
upon a red stool; laughing as tears streamed down my
cheeks, while we regaled each other with stories of flights
gone by. Buoyed by the knowledge that, despite what has
fundamentally changed, much more has indeed stayed
the same.
It’s certainly been a remarkable month and one I’ll
undoubtedly never forget. Despite navigating various
border restrictions, lockdowns, cancelled flights and roster
adjustments, acknowledging the pull to fly has been worth
it in ways too numerous to count. It goes without saying
that the road to recovery isn’t going to be perfect, but I’m
absolutely confident that while we remain open to being
adaptable, that it also leaves us open to new, unique
opportunity. That while it’s impossible not to grieve for
what has been lost, it’s also possible to walk into the future
with curiosity and resolve, while we carve out a new and
exciting tomorrow.
at the end.
Various roles at Trent Nathan head
office from the age of 9 (there was
no OOSH care or if it was available,
the cost was prohibitive, so I went to
work with my mother!)
- Assisted the receiving dock,
Why did you want to work for
the FAAA?
I have been a member of various
work and have always stood up for
workers’ rights and conditions.
I had reached a point where I wanted
to put my knowledge and enthusiasm
to use. Prior to stand down and
joining the team, I was elected to
the Qantas WH&S committee as a
SYD Health & Safety Rep.
How have you found working for
the FAAA so far?
It has been strange – I miss the faceto-face
interaction with crew, though
I still manage to connect with
members when I work in the Office
(or from home during lock down)
fielding emails and calls. It has also
been a steep learning curve while
I have been assisting the Industrial
team with matters from Clause 11s
to Workers’ Comp and attending
meetings with Qantas. Trying to
get my head around VAI’s VR/
redeployment and the subsequent
VAA EBA has also been a challenge
and I thank Laura McKay for
her patience with my numerous
questions. Steven Reed as always,
is a wealth of knowledge –
my personal FAAA office “oracle”!
How do you see the future of the
FAAA with you in it?
We have a strong and dedicated team
which is working hard to maintain
conditions against a backdrop of
Covid-19 doom and gloom. Certain
employers are trying to erode
conditions under the veil of Covid-19
and at the same time touting a
travel boom to the markets when
international borders reopen.
THE IMPORTANCE OF
BEING A FAAA MEMBER
By Steven Reed - Industrial Officer
When I was asked to write a small article to outline the successes of the union
over the years, my first thought was how do you condense decades of specialised
Cabin Crew representation into a small article. Having said that, let’s firstly list a
few things that the wider union movement achieved for workers in Australia.
Annual leave, Long service Leave, Penalty rates, maternity
leave, Superannuation, Equal pay for women, Health
and Safety and Workers’ Compensation, Sick leave,
Redundancy payments, meal breaks and rest breaks,
collective bargaining and unfair dismissal protection.
Can you imagine your job as a flight attendant without
these conditions that we take for granted? You would have
none of these provisions without the work of the union
movement and yet that almost seems impossible to believe
but it’s true.
Let’s just spend a few moments thinking about the job of
Cabin crew and what our small union has achieved for us
over the decades we have existed.
Promotion for Women – did you know that it was the
union that made it possible in Qantas for women to be
promoted? Until the 1980’s it was the exclusive purview
of male cabin crew and Qantas continued to discriminate
against women even after the laws changed until the
Union took the matter to court. Hard to believe but that’s
the fact of the matter
Outrageous treatment of Women
Women had to leave if they decided to get married –
how would you feel if your employer said you cannot be
married and a flight attendant? Well Qantas used to do
that, they also used to weigh you at sign on if you were a
female and if you had put on a few pounds you were stood
down until you lost the weight?
Women couldn’t get the job of a flight attendant if married
and had to leave if they wanted to marry. Can you believe
that marriages were kept “quiet”, so you didn’t lose your job?
Women were required to retire at age 35 as that was their
use by date according to Qantas. Can you believe that?
The union movement even now is fighting for appropriate
payment and conditions around transfer to safe job when
pregnant and your Doctor suggests that you give up flying
for medical reasons.
Staff Travel
Single employees could not have anyone other than a
family member on their staff travel. The FAAA was the first
union to press for Buddy travel against a lot of opposition.
We were the Union that achieved the ability to change that
nominated beneficiary every two years and subsequently
every 6 months. We still believe that this can be improved
on, but who will do it if the FAAA doesn’t?
Home Transport provisions
Nobody could possibly understand how it feels when you
get off a Long Range Flight and feel like you have been
hit by a bus. Would you feel safe to drive home? It was
the FAAA that fought for proper transport provisions and
negotiated boundaries. These were further improved in
EBA10. Can you imagine how unsafe it would be without
home transport?
Horizontal Crew Rest
Did you know that Cabin crew had to go on strike in
1981 to get horizontal crew rest? The Company even now
wants to use A330 aircraft on Long Range Flights and we
are fighting for proper crew rest. If the FAAA doesn’t fight
who will?
Crew Rest seats
Did you know that crew rest seats had to be fought for
as part of an agreement? Prior to the FAAA getting crew
rest seats you might have been allowed to sit in a spare
passenger seat or a jump seat but you were not allowed
to close your eyes? Sounds like a fairy tale? It’s not,
20 WINTER EDITION 2021

ut what we take for granted now was fought for and
we continue to have that fight to retain it in every EBA.
Redundancy Provisions
The provisions of the EBA provide amongst the most
generous redundancy provisions in Australia. The union
movement achieved that through collective bargaining. Can
you imagine being made redundant after decades and only
getting 12 weeks redundancy? That’s what you face without
the EBA conditions that were achieved by your FAAA.
Watershed decision
Talking to those that preceded my time at the FAAA the
universal view is that the 1974 Award was the watershed
for Flight Attendants in Australia. Not only did it provide a
set of working conditions that recognised that international
crew had a unique set of working conditions but it for the
first time outlined proper rest provisions for cabin crew.
It also provided pay rises and was a hard-fought win for
the union against an airline that contested every aspect of
the union claim. Has much changed in that opposition to
fair and reasonable working conditions by employers?
Accommodation and Allowances
Our EBA refers to “first class accommodation and meals”
– this was a union win in 1980’s. The meals are calculated
on the menus published at the hotels that we stay at. The
airlines are trying to drive down the cost of accommodation
and meals and in EBA 11 they want to get rid of cash
meal allowances and have them paid in arrears into your
bank account a couple of weeks after the trip. EBA 11 will
determine whether you can feed yourself and whether your
accommodation will be suitable for the fact that you spend
most of your working life away from home in a hotel.
What impact would that have on you? Are your credit
cards already maxed out? Can you even get credit cards
with what you have lost during COVID? These are a
couple of things at risk now that the Union fought hard for
and we take for granted now.
Work Health and Safety
The FAAA has led the way over many decades in the
WHS field. Despite the laws protecting Health and Safety
representatives Airlines have tried to bully and influence
WHS representatives. It is the FAAA and your elected
team that have been behind your rep’s supporting them
and providing advice and strength. If not the FAAA who is
going to do that?
Our next EBA will be conducted in an environment where
your conditions are under threat and you will have limited
capacity to take any protected action because you are
stood down or not working. Why do you think that the
Company is so desperate to get this done before flying
starts to ramp-up?
Don’t forget, your membership of the FAAA will be the
difference between the Company taking advantage of the
Pandemic and stripping your conditions ,and you being
able to place yourself in the best position to defend the
things important to you by having a strong and united
FAAA representing you.
Don’t take any of these things above for granted.
Whilst some are contained in the Basic Cabin Crew
Modern Award; the difference between that and your
EBA is massive. Stay strong, stay united and stay FAAA.
BLAKEY’S BYTES
so if you haven’t done so recently, take the time to do so.
FLY ON THE WALL –
TOP THINGS CABIN CREW
TALK ABOUT AT WORK
By Julian Groneberg
In the base, or on board, what’s a good workplace without a bit of chatter between
colleagues? When it comes to us flight attendants, we have a lot to say. In fact, a
plane is a very social workplace by virtue of there being plenty of listening ears
and moving mouths — all within very close proximity.
We’re the master of making small – or sometimes in the
wee hours, big – talk. It’s probably part of why we were hired
in the first place. There’s something quite special about being
part of this family, and being privy to
the insider things we bond and chat about. As I see it, the
social and close-knit crew community is by far one of the
best aspects of the job. Whether it’s for the flying kangaroo,
the big V or even the Gulf airlines – if you’ve been crew,
you can guarantee you’ve chatted in the galley about one
of the following on one of your trips.
THEIR ROSTERS
“Have you got just day returns? How many hours
are you on? How has reserve been?”
Probably the safest topic of conversation is the roster. It’s a
great conversation starter because everyone has something to
say about it. Roster chat typically goes into overdrive in the
days before the new work schedule is released. It’s a broad
topic of convo, as roster chat also stems into all other roster
related specifics such as trip swaps, days off between trips,
late or early shifts and on it goes.
When it comes to rosters, you
can bet if someone has a good
one, or a particularly bad/tiring
one, it will be discussed.
OTHER CREW
“Oh I am working with so and
so again. Have you worked
with them before? What is that
CSM like?”
Just like any workplace, the
people who comprise it are a
conversation staple. Trying to pretend crew don’t talk about
each other is like trying to argue that planes get a deep clean
after each flight. You can guarantee if someone has done
something irritating, or if there was a crew that clashed there
will be a post-mortem about it on a future flight from the crew
who witnessed it. It’s not all negative though – there’s also a
lot of love for the people we like to work with, and the times
that we have shared together on trips.
COMPANY ANNOUNCEMENTS, SPECULATION
AND RUMOURS
“Did you hear we’re going to start flying to ….”
“They are going to offer another round of VR.”
Any announcement, or ‘crumour’, and you can bet crew are
talking about it – even before it is formally announced. Pilots
are also in on this game. One of the speculations aircrew tend
to get most excited about is new destinations. The longer I fly
the more I have to see it to believe it, which is often when it’s
in the media, or when the trip is on my roster. Still, it’s a fun
thing to think about. Some speculation however much less so:
such anxiety-inducing prospects
as the stubborn rumour from a
few years back that the Brisbane
International base was set to close.
THE PASSENGERS
“Did you see 58B, go and check
him out – definitely the BOB.”
“Can’t deal with her.
She complained that the locker
above her seat was full and
it was only her space to use...
Dollface needs to get real.”
24 WINTER EDITION 2021

Passengers are the variable in our day that we can never
predict, and ensure that things are always kept interesting
if we choose to maintain a curiosity about the people we
transport across the world. Often they can be enraging, but
sometimes engaging. If there is one of particular note, like
a certain Chris Hemsworth or the like, you can guarantee it
is going to set crew tongues wagging. One of my favourite
stories was a domestic flight attendant I worked with who
met her husband of several decades in the back galley on a
Perth flight. You just never know who you could meet when
it comes to passengers and sometimes you might wish you
never met them at all!
THEIR PLANS UPLINE
“There’s a really good yum cha restaurant just near
the hotel.”
“Oh I’m not doing anything, not leaving the room
on this trip.”
Great for making conversation is the openended question
“What are you doing in (insert port name)” – this is a
conversation starter for learning about where to go and what
to do. Sure, some of the answers do get repetitive, just like
any of the conversation starters. Also sometimes people
go into too much detail about the step by step of their slip
routine. But it’s a gem of a talking point and often is the
starting point of forming fantastic plans with other crew on
what will end up being a memorable trip.
THEIR PERSONAL LIVES
“I don’t know if it’s going to work out between us;
my kids are at that age where they are really acting out.”
Siting on an atlas box, or on that red camping stool and
having a heart to heart at three in the morning. That’s crew
for you. We form bonds very quickly – and with a lot of
downtime on the overnight flights, there’s opportunity to really
offer advice and seek the counsel of our colleagues. It might
be about our relationships, our love lives, or our mental state
– but it is an absolute privilege to have a listening ear, or to be
one, and to have the opportunity to get things off our chest
with a trusted crew member. That’s our flying family for you.
THEIR ENTITLEMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS
“Do we get a reduced slip payment now this flight
has been so delayed?”
doubt going to be a lot more discussion regarding entitlements
and work conditions in the future, and as much as crew can
discuss the ins and outs on board, the FAAA team will be the
best to ask for the most accurate information.
THINGS THAT HAVE CHANGED IN THE JOB
“Remember the order is now SLOB. Seatbelt, lifejacket,
oxygen, brace”
“We do a collection separately to hot drinks now.”
The service has changed, the boarding process has changed,
the safety demo order has changed, the crew complement
will be changing, the departure time is changing. There
will be always discussion – and often debate – between crew
interpreting the changes… as often they aren’t black and
white. Crew will also dissect what these changes will mean
for them. Because we work with so many people, and there
are so many changes, there will always someone that needs
to be brought up to speed.
It might be the dawn of a new era in the airline industry, but
what comes out of cabin crew mouths and goes into respective
ears remains broadly the same. We have the same kinds of
fears hopes, questions, opinions as before – just perhaps with
a new twist. There’s great comfort about the fact that each
and every time you go to work there will the chance for
The back
galley – where
the mouth
magic between
crew happens.
a great conversation, someone to listen, someone to ask, and
something that we offer up to each other in this fabulous job.
The beauty of being crew is that you always have someone
to ask when it comes to what trips qualify for transport,
what allowances you should get, and other things related to
the EBA. There’s a whole wealth of knowledge that has been
accumulated. If you’re vegetarian someone will be able to
tell you how to go about ordering a VG crew meal – and
much much more. Given it is soon EBA time, there’s no
