Proving age is no barrier
to keeping fit and mobile
• By Samantha Mythen
LIN CLARK, an 81-year-old
energetic gym-goer believes
age is no excuse for not making
your fitness and mobility a
priority.
Clark makes up a trio of
inspiring active women attending
the Female Federation gym who
all share their birthdays this
month.
Isabel Mundy and Ngaire
Onekawa are both set to turn
80-years-old this month, on
February 7 and 18 respectively.
Clark’s 82nd birthday is on February
15.
All three powerhouse ladies
regularly attend the gym, taking
part in Pilates and balance
classes, as well as working on
their own cardio and weights
routines.
They are choosing to stay
fit and healthy, defying the
stereotype that aging holds you
back from achieving an active
lifestyle.
Decked out with a Crusaders
tattoo and a Rugby World Cup
tattoo on each wrist, Onekawa is
a keen sportswoman.
She has always been active.
$150 fine likely for motorists
driving in Main North Rd bus lanes
CARS CAUGHT driving in the
Main North Rd bus lanes during
their hours of operation could
find themselves being ticketed
from March 1.
This will result in a $150 fine.
Said city council transport operations
manager Steffan Thomas:
“Parking compliance officers
have been closely monitoring the
bus lanes for the
past few weeks and
have been issuing
warnings to those
motorists misusing
the lanes.
“Our focus has
been on educating
drivers about the bus
lane rules, but from
March 1 we will switch to an
enforcement approach.
Steffan
Thomas
“Instead of issuing warnings,
parking compliance offices will
issue infringement notices if
they see someone driving in the
bus lane when they shouldn’t
be.’’
“Bus lanes are designed to give
people who travel by bus priority
on the transport network at busy
times of the day. When a motorist
chooses to drive in a bus lane,
ENFORCEMENT: Motorists driving through Main North Rd bus lanes at times of operation
will be fined $150.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
they are potentially stopping
buses from having a clear route
of travel and adding to the journey
time of all those on board.
“Please respect the rules and
stay out of the bus lanes when
they are in operation.
“The only time that motorists
should be in a bus lane, during
the hours they are in operation,
is if they are making a turn.
Even then, they can only drive
in the lane for less than 50m
– that’s the size of an Olympicsized
swimming pool or half a
rugby field.’’
The Main North Rd bus lane
that heads into the city operates
weekdays from 7am to 9am.
During those hours only buses,
bicycles, emergency service vehicles,
motorcycles, motor scooters
and mopeds are permitted in the
bus lane.
A small section of that bus lane,
between Mary St and Loftus St,
also operates weekday afternoons
between 2pm and 6pm.
The Main North Rd bus
lane that heads out of the city
operates between 3pm and 6pm
weekdays, apart from in some
specified areas.
“In the areas immediately outside
schools the north-bound bus
lane operates between 4pm and
6pm. This exception has been
made to make it easy for parents
and caregivers to pick up their
children at the end of the school
day,’’ Thomas said.
Bus lanes on the stretch of
Main North Rd immediately
outside the Northlands Shopping
Centre operate at all times.
All bus lanes across the city
have signage informing people
about their hours of operation.
Yellow bins not for e-waste disposal
SOME Christchurch residents
are mistakenly disposing
electronic devices in their yellow
bins instead of dropping them
off at the city council’s EcoDrop
Recycling Centres or e-waste
specialists.
City council resource recovery
manager Ross Trotter said, generally,
recycling has improved
across the city,
with the rinsing
of more
bottles and
containers and
the removal of
lids, which go
in the red bin.
Ross Trotter
However,
he said “we
are continuing to see electronic
waste and electronic appliances
in these yellow bins rather than
being left at our EcoDrop centres
or with e-waste specialists.”
“As you enjoy your new phone
and electronic appliances, it’s
important to get rid of the old
ones the right way but e-waste
and household electrical items
are not on the yellow bin list,”
said Trotter.
However, he said there are
plenty of other disposal options
in Christchurch.
Said Trotter: “Well-used
RECYCLE: Electronic devices are being mistakenly put in some Christchurch residents’ yellow bins.
mobiles or laptops – along with a
multitude of redundant gaming
devices – and TVs need not end
up in the rubbish.
“You can support a circular
– and clean – economy when it
comes to electronic waste and
any effort to reduce waste, reuse,
recycle or even reboot is invaluable.
“There are several ways to dispose
of unwanted items or even
give old electronics a new life.
“Many of the components
or materials used in electronic
devices can be recycled while
unwanted items can also be rehomed.
Being more aware of the
recycling options close to your
home and taking the time to
ensure responsible disposal can
contribute to an e-waste solution.
“Just remember to delete your
personal data from any electronic
device and remove SIM
cards from cellphones before
disposal.”
People can head to the local
EcoDrop Recycling Centre or
participating retail stores to dispose
of batteries, including those
used in laptops, cellphones and
power tools at no cost.
The EcoDrop Recycling
Centres accept a wide range of
household items in working and
non-working condition for reuse
and for free, with acceptance on
inspection.
Items include stereos, vacuum
cleaners, power tools and printer
toner cartridges. Most metal
items are also accepted – free of
charge – as scrap metal.
Old phones – whatever their
condition – can also be recycled
via Re: Mobile, with collection
spots scattered Christchurch.
Kilmarnock, in Wigram, also
takes e-waste for dismantling
and recycling.
The charity accepts computers,
computer-related equipment,
phones, printers, televisions and
more.
There is a fee, depending on
the items. By taking old electronics
to Kilmarnock, people can
help provide employment opportunities
for individuals with
disabilities.
Another Wigram-based
charity, the Molten Media
Community Trust, accepts a
range of electronic goods to
refurbish and sell or to dismantle
and dispose of unwanted
components.
‘It’s a relief to find you’re still strong’
• From page 1
The mother of three children,
seven grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren, played
netball until she was 42. She
even competed against her own
daughters.
Clark has always found her
energy outdoors in nature; a keen
hiker, horse rider and gardener.
She owns a remote cabin in
Lewis Pass, and although is not
climbing the nearby mountain
heights, she still loves to wander
through the beech trees.
Mundy used to work in
her family’s fruit and tomato
business which kept her strong
and fit. When she finished up
working, she decided to head to
the gym. She’s been attending
three times a week for the past
four years.
Onekawa has kept up
consistent gym practice for more
than 12 years. She now attends
Female Federation five times a
week.
Onekawa can do multiple
push-ups, straight-backed
with her knees up. She also said
she can do side plank rotations
and dips, and has completed
200m within 15 minutes on the
ski erg.
Clark knows the importance of
rest days. She has been attending
the gym on and off since 1998,
and in spite of a hip replacement
CAMARADERIE: Lin Clark, Isabel Mundy and Ngaire Onekawa all attend the gym multiple
times a week, incorporating cardio, strength training, Pilates and balance exercises into
their practice.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
taking her out of the game for
a while, she is building up her
practice one again. Clark enjoys
chin-ups, the chest press and leg
press.
“It’s a relief to find you’re still
strong,” she said.
When answering why
they attended the gym,
Onekawa promptly stood up
from her chair. “This is why,” she
said.
Mundy agreed: “To keep my
core strong!”
Clark said: “As you get older,
the physical stuff becomes
terribly important and you
become more aware of your body
and how it works.”
“Coming to the gym is a
positive step to being a strong
and complete person.”
For Clark, getting to the gym
is also important for the mental
benefits. Her life passions have
been education and theatre;
in 2019, she was awarded the
prestigious Drama New Zealand
President’s Award, given to
someone who has significantly
contributed to the drama space
over their lifetime.
They all share the same goal:
To keep going.
There is strong camaraderie
between the three women,
and they love being part of
the community at Female
Federation.
Onekawa said she gets coffee
twice a week with her new found
gym friends.
“It’s a sisterhood here,” said
Clark.
Jill Kennedy, their personal
trainer is 64-years-old. She
only has glowing reviews of
the fitness levels of the three
women.
“I cannot wait til I retire to
be able to work out with them
all.”
Clark said: “We are lucky
enough to be able to work out,
and so we choose to make the
most of this and continue to stay
fit.”
Waitangi Day celebrated with hangi at rest home
BRYNDWR REST home Radius
Hawthorne treated
staff and residents to a
homemade hāngī to honour
Waitangi Day.
This annual tradition was
led by Bill Parker, a diversional
therapist who has worked at
Radius Hawthorne for more
than 20 years.
He built the hāngī inside a
beer keg, taking four hours
to cook. Ingredients included
kumara, potatoes, cabbage,
chicken, pork and lamb.
On the morning leading up
to the lunch, Māori residents
were in high spirits, singing
waiata and reminiscing about
celebrating with hāngī in their
earlier years.
A number of elderly Māori
and pakeha residents were
thrilled to be involved in
preparing and eating the
hāngī.
“The smell of the food took
me back and boy it tasted good,”
said kaumātua resident Jeff
Samson.
“Supporting people’s
cultural traditions when they’re
in a rest home environment
is part of truly caring for an
individual and giving them a
full, active life in later years,”
facility manager Jacqui Boylen
said.
Staff at Radius Hawthorne
have backgrounds from a range
of countries, including England,
India, South African, Australia,
Philippines, Nepal, Fiji, Egypt
and New Zealand.
The elderly residents
themselves often have strong
international connections to
countries in Europe, the United
Kingdom and elsewhere.
“Cultural celebrations lift
the spirits of residents,
encourage them to discuss new
topics, and it’s also a great way
to build social connections
between residents and staff,”
Boylen said.
2020 finished with
a bang for me or should I say, a knock! On
New Year’s Eve, I was unceremoniously
and rather dramatically hit by a car
and knocked off my mountain bike. The
shock, the bruises and the reversal in my
tenuous cycling confidence, whilst not
critical or bone-breaking, has given me
the chance to dust off my thinking as we
move into 2021.
2021 feels like a beautiful chance for all of us
to rethink different aspects of our lives, for me
at least. Professionally, it’s already feeling like
a full year. I expect the market to continue in
its current state, with strong buyer demand,
some stand-out – if not exceptional – prices,
and land to be highly sought-after by entrylevel
investors (most of the developers are
actively hunting).
It’s also easy to imagine some respite for
buyers with regard to choice, as the new
year summer-flush run of property enters the
marketplace.
For investors, there are a number of dynamics.
‘Boomers’ (sorry for the label!) are not
offloading investment portfolio properties like
they might once have done. Reasons for this
include the fact that returns are higher than for
bank deposits and the belief returns will only
improve with increasing tenant demand. There
are also more and more people contemplating
property investment and I’m not going to
comment on the proposed reinstatement of
LVR restrictions, but I will comment on this.
These are unusual times, they are adverse to
anything any of us might have seen before, and
the optimism that conditions have produced
is contagious. 2021 is expected to deliver us
out of the uncertainty of 2020, but one border
slip-up could see us all changing places and
once again our world could be upended.
That’s why it’s important to not only work
diligently but look at yourself honestly: is what
I’m doing what I want to be doing? And am I
doing it to the best of my ability? I’m a ‘yes’ and
a ‘yes’, but we’re all only an outbreak or in my
own case, a potential accident, away from not
getting the chance to really consider our year,
our lives and our potential. I’d like to embrace
qualities of courage, perseverance, empathy,
kindness and – a tough one – patience, and
I wish you all luck with your own journey,
personal or professional, in 2021.
P.S. for those of you who are cycling purists or
know my lovely husband well, the picture above
is not the bike he gave me!
Full steam ahead in Bill’s backyard
• By Susan Sandys
BILL STANLEY, 67, has created a
model train lovers’ fantasy land in
his backyard.
When he and wife Maggie
moved to their new home in Canterbury
five years ago, Stanley saw
“a blank canvas, just waiting for a
garden railway layout.”
He set to work, and today has
eight model trains which run
on more than 200m of track, set
amongst a 27m diorama of buildings,
settlements, fields and bridges.
The trains pass through all sorts
of activity amongst the Playmobil
people, vehicles and buildings,
including a wedding outside
Lincoln Union Church, fields being
harvested, and a quarry being
mined.
Some of the buildings, including
the church, Stanley has made
himself, learning first through
the Canterbury Garden Railway
Group of which he is a committee
member, and then teaching himself
along the way.
The track and its impressive
setting, at the couple’s home in Lincoln,
is complete with a pond and
real goldfish. It has been a labour of
love, and one that has its origins in
Stanley’s childhood.
“Trains just fascinated me as a
child and they still do, we have
been from LA to New York by
train,” he said.
His grandfather William Stanley
gave him a Hornby double O
railway set when he was about
five.
William had worked on the
railways, and Stanley has inherited
the whistle that William used
in his job, believed to be as an engineer,
and keeps it on his garden
railway key ring.
Stanley kept the passion for
trains and railways moving
down the generations; he and
Maggie bought their 29-year-old
son Richard his first engine when
he was a baby.
They continued to add to the
collection, and always incorporated
train travel in their overseas
trips. These were for professional
purposes in earlier years
as Stanley travelled as part of his
job as a pharmaceutical company
director.
The trip through the United
States was in the 1990s, while
they also lived in Thailand for
five years to 1998 and travelled
extensively through Europe.
“You can set your clock by the
trains in Switzerland,” he said.
While trains in Thailand at
the time were substandard in
comparison, they had been just as
enjoyable to travel on as the country’s
elephants and longboats.
Stanley sometimes has groups
come and view his backyard
garden railway creation, and it is
a hobby he enjoys with others in
the garden railway group, which
will be hosting the National
Garden Railway Convention
in Christchurch on Waitangi
Weekend.
He said setting up the train
track, which runs from a purpose-built,
life-size shed, takes 90
minutes each time.
“It’s quite a lot of work to have
them running to precision, it’s
quite common to have derailments,”
Stanley said.
Obstacles such as stones or
grit on the track, or interception
by creatures such as the Stanley
household’s pet cats or dogs, were
the cause of such frustrations.
One of the biggest challenges
had been securing the track in
ballast that wouldn’t move when
a blower is used to remove pine
needles which have fallen down
from nearby trees.
Interest in Mexican restaurant rises
• By Bea Gooding
EXCITEMENT IS building as
residents anticipate the opening
of the city’s very first Taco Bell
restaurant.
Construction of the $1.3m
Mexican-inspired fast food restaurant
at the Eastgate Mall site
started last month and is set to
open later this year.
Simon Fisher was walking to
Subway with his son Shane when
he shared his excitement for
Linwood’s newest addition.
He could not wait to start
tucking into their fresh tacos,
salads and desserts.
“It’s great, I’ve always wanted a
Taco Bell in Christchurch. I used
to live in Australia and we had
lots of Taco Bells.”
Linda Rowlinson, who was
waiting for a bus outside Eastgate,
regularly visits the area. She
likes Mexican food, so having
a new option was something to
look forward to.
“I think it’s great. I’m up here
shopping all the time; I live in
New Brighton and there’s nothing
there so we’ve got to come up
here,” she said.
She believes the area has been
targeted for these types of outlets
but was not concerned because
“people should have a variety.”
Jacob Chatterton is looking
forward to the prospect of getting
a job at the restaurant more
than eating its food.
“I’ve never had Taco Bell. But
if I don’t have a job by
then, I’ll definitely apply
to work there.
“I think everyone
around here will like it
more, and it means less
people at McDonald’s
and KFC. The only thing
healthy for a takeaway
here is the Subway.”
But its proximity to
other outlets has caused some
concern.
It joins a group of restaurants
Jacob
Chatterton
within 200m of Linwood
Avenue School, including KFC,
McDonald’s, Burger King and
Domino’s pizza, with other
options inside Eastgate
Mall.
Said principal
Gretchen Smith: “For
us as a school, we have
constant temptation at
the gate, fuelled by the
power of the brand, and
the aroma of fast food
wafting over the school
on a daily basis, which
can be appetising or nauseating.”
This comes after a study
published last week in the
OPTIONS: A Taco Bell restaurant is
being built in Linwood, Simon Fisher,
along with son Shane, is looking
forward to Mexican food.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
Preventive Medicine journal by
Canterbury University revealed a
correlation between poor mental
health and people living in
unhealthy environments.
People experiencing recent
mental distress or received
a diagnosis had a greater
likelihood of living near fast
food or alcohol outlets, with less
access to parks and waterways,
the study found.
The findings highlighted
a need for local councils
and governments to create
environments that support
healthy lifestyles, lowering
the risk of mental illness and
distress.
Smith said the school was not
consulted on the matter seeing as
the area is a commercial zone.
Starting this year, the school
will supply lunch every day
as part of the Ministry of
Education’s “lunch in school”
programme, to help pupils meet
their nutritional needs.
“The big brands that target this
area will, of course, say that they
are just meeting the demands of
the local community and that
they offer healthy alternatives
such as salad and water, or that
they give back to the community.”
It is not the first time concerns
regarding the proliferation of fast
food restaurants in Linwood has
been raised.
In 2016, a petition was presented
to the city council to ban fast
food restaurants within 800m of
schools.
But residents have yet to see
action as the city council said
it was not able to change the
district plan to regulate fast food
until this year.

Maths Geek or Emotional Basket Case?
Are you a Math Geek or Emotional Basket
Case when it comes to buying?
Observations of Buyer Types
In my sixteen years in the industry I have
certainly seen a wide variety of techniques
and methods used by purchasers when
looking to buy property. Some more creative
or unique than others, some entertaining
others just bizarre, some bring tools and
devices, gadgets and widgets, some come
alone others bring tribes of followers,
however the following are the ones seen
most often in their extreme;
The Math Geek
This is the buyer that has researched
every statistic, graph, chart and online
calculator known to man relating to the
property market, they know the medians,
the percentages, the over and under’s, the
decimal points and the dots of the previous
ten years property market. They look at
a property purchase like a problem to be
solved, if a house has an area of X2 + 4r –
100,000 what is it worth? A theory on a
percentage over or under RV (council rating
valuation) can often also be clung on to by
the math geek buyer like the launch codes
to a missile. For those of you who are of the
analytical mind set you are probably thinking
right now, so – what’s wrong with that? I
am not saying that some research is not
warranted, in fact I recommend it, however
this approach in its extreme will hinder
the math focused purchaser as they then
discount viewing properties that may well fall
in their budget but their stats approach puts
them off even looking, or they find something
they really like and then submit an offer
solely based on their formulas only and often
miss out and wonder why. I can tell you now
in a city like Christchurch our rating values
to purchase prices vary widely, if there was
a guaranteed formula then someone would
have figured it out. Recent surrounding
sales of similar properties in a similar area
are a much better indication of value but
you still must take into consideration the
things that don’t appear in the stats such as
Feature Properties
orientation to sun, size of
the bedrooms, flow of the
home, storage, outdoor
living aspect and probably
to the horror of the math
geek purchaser I am even
going to say the ‘feel’ of a
home.
The Emotional Basket
Case
This buyer has been
pouring over home
magazines and interior
design blogs in their
breaks at work and
on their devices in the
evening, they have boards
on Pintrest organised according to rooms in a
house and they know what couch they want
from Freedom and the duvet cover that will
match the curtains for the house they haven’t
bought yet. Buying a home for them is an
exciting prospect and they look forward to
the weekends open homes more than they
did their own wedding. This buyer views
homes with an eye to nest, never mind that
the roof needs replacing and the electrics
won’t fly with the insurer – it has a wall they
can take out (something strangely people
love to say they’ll do, however engineering
and the laws of physics often have other
things to say about these random wall
removals). It is great to have enthusiasm and
sure why not enjoy the home buying process,
it will be one of the largest purchasers you
will ever make. Please however put your
practical pants on before committing to an
offer and just check that you still have your
appropriate due diligence in place.
The Apron String Buyers
Being a reasonably independent person
who left home at 18 and moved cities away
from my family for uni I guess I may be being
a little unfairly tough on these buyers, but
in my view if you need your mum to sign in
at open homes for you maybe you aren’t
ready to purchase a property yet… No I am
not kidding, yes this actually does happen,
more often than you think. I get that some
people want some help and yep your mum
and dad can be these people but home
ownership carries a lot of responsibility
and a level maturity is needed, not in age
but in the confidence required to deal with
the purchasing process. By all means, bring
your mum if you want to but you sign in, you
ask the relevant questions and you pursue
your interest in the property. If you need
advice too remember your lawyer, broker or
bank are who you need to rely on, the legal
and lending environments are constantly
changing and your mum and dads purchasing
experience in 1993 might not still be all that
relevant (sorry mum and dad, you can ignore
this if you have purchased in post-quake
Christchurch as the experience will be
relevant).
The Combo
The most entertaining of the above buyer
types is the emotional basket case and math
geek couple, as they leave an open home
and get in the car I often wonder how their
conversation must go as one whips out their
calculator app and the other the Resene
Summer colour chart. To say that though it is
these couples that will likely make the best
buying decision, a little emotion tied in with
some practicality and rationalism, and maybe
a little advice from mum and dad.
AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS
Customers pleased with honest,
reliable vehicle servicing
Having your vehicle regularly serviced is
key to getting the best out of it in terms of
fuel efficiency and reduced wear and tear
on expensive parts.
Kevin, who owns and operates Parker
Automotive in Birmingham Drive,
provides full vehicle servicing to keep your
vehicle running smoothly, as well as WOFs,
batteries and tyres.
He also carries out all mechanical repairs,
including cam belt replacement, suspension
work, clutch and gearbox repairs, only
repairing what’s necessary, and without
charging the earth.
He has owned the business since 2007,
and over that time has established a loyal
customer base – people that rely on him
to give them sound advice and provide
professional care and servicing for their
vehicles.
Customers come from across the city,
Spreydon, Hillmorton, Riccarton, Halswell
and Middleton areas, and the business has
received many positive Google reviews
from customers. Below are some examples:
I have been going to Parker Automotive
for the last eight years and I cannot fault the
service. The mechanical work has been top
notch! If you want top service and value for
money I recommend Parker Automotive. –
honest guy who gets the job done in a very
timely manor and he has outstanding
communication. The overall service I’ve
received is excellent. – Lachlan Poole
I know it’s not always about price but
sometimes, when it comes to vehicle repairs,
you just want a perceived good deal and work
carried out by someone who seems to care.
Kevin came recommended by a friend, and
what a great recommendation. His work was
clean, efficient, fast and came in under what
I thought it was going to cost. So we took my
partner’s car there two days later and that
too was completed faster than we expected
and at an almost unbelievable cost.
Give Parker Automotive a shot next
time you need something done. Kevin
is a nice fella too, win win. – Mark
Earlier this year, Parker Automotive
moved from premises on the Lincoln
and Torrens roads corner to a new site
at 23B Birmingham Drive, Middleton.
Opening hours are Monday to
Friday 7.30am-4pm, Saturday 8am-
