“
There are no days off in
crabbing.”
~ Nick Mavar
f you know much about Newport, then you know that we take Dungeness crab
very seriously here! In fact, the phrase “The Dungeness Crab Capital of the World”
became a registered trademark of the city in 2007. The Port of Newport is home to
the largest commercial fishing fleet on the Oregon Coast, and has been harvesting
record numbers of this prized culinary crustacean for over a decade. Because so much crab is
gathered locally, residents and visitors alike are able to purchase fresh crab right off the docks,
from area fish markets, and may enjoy crab in many local restaurants. Newport also offers a
variety of opportunities for you to catch your own crab directly from the docks of the Yaquina
Bay, or by boat in the bay itself.
Commercial crabbing is a way of life in Newport, and many residents work in the industry
harvesting, processing and preparing the popular shellfish. Crabbing from Newport is hard
work, and it’s dangerous. During crabbing season, fishermen brave the rough and potentially
deadly seas, and extreme weather to collect crab by passing through the Yaquina Bay Jetty, an
area simply known as “the bar.” The Yaquina Bay bar is an invisible horizontal barrier, where
the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean meet with the much shallower waters coming from the
mouth of the Yaquina River, causing extremely perilous conditions for boats leaving and
returning to the bay.
Out to sea, beyond the Yaquina Bay bar, commercial crabbers must work along the edge of the
Pacific Northwest coastline known as the “Graveyard of the Pacific,” where jagged, unforeseen
rocks and severe and rapidly changing weather create hazardous crabbing conditions. The
Discovery Channel has chronicled the life-threatening work environment faced by Newport’s
commercial crabbers in the reality series, Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove. In addition to the
difficult and harsh working conditions, crab fishermen often have to negotiate the price of
crab to get fair payment for their yield.
If you want to catch your own crab, the Yaquina Bay is perfect; it requires minimal expense
T

and preparation and provides a great individual, family or group experience. Crabbing in
the bay is open year round, although most crab is harvested between June and November.
The best times to crab are when there is less difference between high and low tides, and
during slack tides. Pick up a copy of the current Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations, a “crab
gauge” measuring tool, and an Oregon shellfish license. Examine the regulations closely
for instructions on gear to use, limits, measuring and determining the sex of the crab. Don’t
forget to dress in warm clothes and bring gloves. Choose to bait your traps with fresh turkey,
chicken, clams, fish carcasses, small fish, or other meat scraps.
If you choose to crab the bay by boat, you will need to stay out of the navigation channel and
away from boat traffic. Select a location to drop your pots or traps that is at least 20 feet deep;
most charter boats are equipped with depth finders, but if you are renting your own boat
make sure that you are crabbing in deep water. Use sinking line (as opposed to floating line)
that is at least twice the estimated depth of the water to avoid having it get tangled in boat
propellers or swept away by erratic tidal currents. Also make sure that your pots or traps are
heavy enough to sink all the way to the sandy bottom, and that your floats and buoys can be
easily distinguished from other crabber’s gear.
Crabbing from a dock or pier is much easier and less expensive than crabbing from a boat,
although the availability of crab can be limited to the specific area that you choose to drop
your traps. The Port of Newport public fishing pier (located between the Rogue Brewery and
the historic Newport Bay Bridge) in South Beach, and the Abbey Street Pier on the Historic
Bayfront are some of the best spots to crab. Tie off the end of your crab line to the pier, and
position your pots and rings so as to not interfere with boat traffic.
If you choose to use pots, leave them undisturbed for at least 45 minutes before pulling them
in to examine your catch. With rings, let them sit at least 10 minutes before checking them,
and then pull them up consistently and quickly to allow the basket shape to capture all of
the crab in the trap. Crab rings and pots are inexpensive and available in many locations
throughout the Newport area, and renting them is even less expensive and might be the best
choice for your first crabbing adventure.
Painting the port

Rogue Ales commissions local
artist to create a mural
A new work of
art has been
installed at the
Rogue Distillery
in South Beach,
one brushstroke
at a time: a
mural depicting keystones
of the Newport port area,
with the aquarium, NOAA
and Hatfield Marine Science
Center among them.
“It’s kind of a representation,
recognition and appreciation
of the (port) area and the
people that make it work,”
explained artist Casey
McEneny, who is working on the wall eight hours per day, every day that the weather
allows.
The mural is part of a brewery building agreement between Rogue and the Port of
Newport when the ale-maker expanded the Ocean Aging Room and the Rolling Thunder
Cooperage.
“We both thought that painting a meaningful mural was a great way to make sure that
the new building had soul, as well as functionality,” explained Hagen Moore, creative
director at Rogue Ales and Spirits.
The Port of Newport provided an initial sketch and concept, and Moore set out to find a
local artist to bring the project to life. When he found the work of McEneny, things really
started rolling.
“I gave him a call to talk about the project. and he was interested,” said Moore. “It took
26 TRAVEL NEWPORT
T

a year or so to get everything
lined up but he’s underway now
— we’re excited and happy to
have him painting the mural.”
McEneny helped refine some
details and add design elements
to enrich the mural,
then he set to work in South
Beach. However, a project this
size is a lofty task for one artist
with three months to pull it off.
So, McEneny called on an old
friend, who flew up from Atlanta:
Jason Kopydlowski.
“He was my roommate in art
school, and we were always
good friends and kind of have the same philosophies in commercial art and painting
styles.”
With the two of them working together, they’re making quick work of the wall. The
process starts with McEneny’s sketch, which he projects onto the blank wall at night so
they can trace it at full size with a warm brown paint. Then, Kopydlowski lays down the
base colors and McEneny comes in to paint the fine details. Of course, they’re entertaining
themselves the whole way, joking and ribbing each other.
But McEneny says it’s the reaction of passers-by that have been most rewarding for
him, including local residents and employees of NOAA and the Hatfield Marine Science
Center.
“So far everyone has had really positive things to say about it,” said Moore. “People
really seem to enjoy watching it develop and some even stop to talk with Casey about
the mural.”
The final product was finished in late August and is on full display for anyone to come
and see, from a distance or up-close.
Tidepools are divided into several zones. The zones
are classified based on wave action, shoreline
features and exposure during tidal periods.
The organisms that live in each zone are dependent
on a number of factors: water temperature, wave
action, variation in salinity (saltiness), exposure
to light and how much water is present. The
conditions have to be just right for an organism to
be comfortable in each zone.
Some organisms are hardier than others and are
able to live in multiple zones. Part of the fun of
exploring tidepools is discovering a plant or animal
where you least expected it to be!
Spray zone: This area extends from the highest
reach of spray and storm waves to the average
height of the high tides. It is usually dry, meaning
relatively few types of organisms can live here.
High tide zone: This zone includes the area from
the average high tide to just below the average sea
level. It is a highly saline (salty) environment and
experiences higher temperatures than other zones.
Mid-tide zone: This zone extends from just
below average sea level to the upper limit of the
average lowest tides. Mid-tide zones experience
more intense wave action than spray or high tide
zones, but nonetheless are rich in animal and plant
diversity.
Low tide zone: This zone is exposed to air only
at the lowest tides. This keeps temperatures and
salinity levels more stable, allowing for more
biodiversity than other zones. Organisms here are
also more protected from predators—like big fish—
because of the wave action and shallow water.

kitchen or kitchenette and private deck. The Agate Beach Motel has DVDs
and board games at the front desk, and dog-friendly rooms are available.
Unwind at Sea Glass Bistro & Lounge
You’ll discover a fantastic place to relax while enjoying amazing coastal
cuisine and beverages inside the Best Western Plus Agate Beach at Sea
Glass Bistro & Lounge. The newly remodeled and renamed restaurant and
bar combines breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks with stunning views of
the Pacific Ocean and Agate Beach. Choose from their seafood inspired
menu, and sip regional craft beer, wine or a signature cocktail from the
dining room, Seaview patio, or comfortable lounge. The Sea Glass Bistro &
Lounge also offers five TVs so that you can watch the big game while you’re
staying on the coast.
Beachcombing is always a
mystery when you wander
Newport’s beaches in
search of treasure; you
just never know what’s been washed up
from the depths of the Pacific Ocean until
you search for it! Great beachcombing
happens every day just a few hours
after high tide, and Agate Beach is the
perfect place to find fossils, agates,
shells and even large fishing floats. Grab
a portable tide table booklet (many local
businesses give them away), a stick or
sturdy pole to poke and pick apart the
piles of flotsam, and a bucket or bag to
hold all of your finds. Happy Hunting!
Newport Brewing Compan

any

Craft beers include a Yaquina Sunrise pale ale, a Dungeness IPA,
fter months of constructing and careful
planning, Newport’s newest brewery is
open for business in the Canyon Way
building that some long-time local
residents will remember as Pop’s.
“It’s been a long road,” said Brodie
Becksted, owner and manager of the
brewery. “It’s been over two years, so we’re pretty
excited to get it open.”
The brewery, which opens with the accompanying
restaurant, The Anchor at Newport Brewing Company,
will have a variety of original craft beers on tap,
including a lager, a pilsner, a pale ale called the Yaquina
Sunrise, a Dungeness IPA and a hazy double IPA, along
with a “Rockfish” stout and the “Salty Big” rosé.
“I’m a lager guy, so that’s what I’m drinking right now,”
Becksted said Friday afternoon, the day before opening
to the public. “We have some non-alcoholic beverages.
We have a full bar with all the alcohol, wine, and we
have hard seltzers, too.”
Each of the seven original brews served up at the
brewery’s opening night aren’t the only original beers
to be brewed on site. Within another week, Newport
Brewing Company staff will have another couple of
brews ready — an English oatmeal stout and a fruity
kettle sour.
“We’ll have a kettle sour with a bunch of fruits and
stuff,” said Sam Zermeño, the brewer. “It’s pretty
popular with the ladies.”
That sour is made with hibiscus, berries and milk sugar
to balance out the tart, Zermeño said.
“It gives it a little bit of sweet so it doesn’t overly bite
your palate with tartness. I add a little bit of vanilla
bean at the end as a dry hop, and it all plays really well
together.”
Food prices will range from $7 to $30, depending
on the dish, slightly higher than the prices offered by
the fledgling brewery’s local competitors. However,
Becksted hopes the modern, industrial vibe of the
brewery will fill the hole in the local market he saw
prior to opening.
“We have a really big brewery across the bay, and
I figured it would be neat to do something a little
different out here,” Becksted said.
The craft beer, too, is unique at the brewery, according
to the in-house brewer.
“I don’t see a lot of people doing the styles of beers
I’m going to be doing here,” Zermeño said. “We’re
going to be doing some pretty interesting kettle sours
and hazy IPAs. Those are pretty trendy still, and we’ll be
doing a handful of those I think will be pretty popular.”
The opening of the brewery’s doors isn’t the last of the
new business’s development. Becksted has plans to
expand what the brewery offers and use the feedback
he and staff get from customers.
“We have plans to expand and add more tanks, add a
canning line, more distribution,” Becksted said. “This is
just a start, really.”
A REMINDER OF LIVES LOST
The wreckage of a fishing boat can be seen during a minus tide about 200 yards south of the south jetty of
Newport’s Yaquina Bay. The remains are believed to be that of the Amber Dawn II, a 43-foot crabbing vessel that
capsized in heavy seas on the night of Dec. 6, 1994 near the tip of the south jetty. All four people aboard lost their
lives. A couple of weeks later, a portion of the boat washed ashore. Heavy equipment was brought to the beach in
an effort to remove the wreckage from the surf, but the attempt was unsuccessful. It remains at the low tide mark,
buried in a considerable amount of sand. (Photo by Jeremy Burke)

‘THIS IS MY TURF’
A gull riding the air currents over Newport’s Agate Beach on Saturday,
June 27, apparently took exception to the fact that a juvenile bald eagle
had invaded his territory. After mixing it up for a bit, the eagle decided to
move on to friendlier air space. (Photo by Jeremy Burke)
