March is Women’s History month which celebrates the contributions 

women have made to the United States and recognizes the specific 

achievements women have made over the course of American history in a 

variety of fields. 

On that note, March 8 is International Women’s Day. This also marks a 

special day for Chandler Chamber member, Bridgett McGowen-Hawkins who along 

with Simone E. Morris, will release their new book, Upward. These two dynamic women 

compiled the inspiring stories of women in business leadership roles sharing struggles 

and challenges and how they overcame them. I had the honor of writing the foreword 

of the book and I love how each woman depicted offers advice on how to achieve your 

goals. 

Keep in mind, The Chandler Chamber’s Women in Leadership program supports, 

educates and elevates the business women of Chandler. This is a monthly, virtual event 

next taking place March 16th featuring Lisa Lieberman-Wang talking about 7 secrets to 

building your business or career in today’s economy.

FORWARD FROM 

UPWARD 

Women Leaders and Changemakers are 

all around us. As a female leader, it is 

my choice, my voice, my actions people 

are watching. Whether that influence is 

positive or negative is up to me. I choose 

to use my power of leadership to be a 

force for good for those around me. 

This book contains inspirational 

stories of women who are making a 

difference in everyday lives around 

the world. Even though they come 

from different places, cultures, and 

backgrounds, they have similar 

leadership characteristics that I 

guarantee will inspire you. 

Character counts so (don’t know 

if this is her ‘saying’ – ‘and’ sounded 

funny) honor it! The importance 

of character and integrity can’t be 

overlooked in our everyday lives and 

career. Character is the foundation of 

how you present yourself to the world. 

A leader’s admirable character will 

influence others to be better. To honor 

this, compromise is not an option. Live 

by your moral or ethical character and 

it will fundamentally shape how you 

engage with the world around you— 

what you notice, what you value, what 

you choose to act on, and how you 

make decisions. Make a positive impact 

and it will have a ripple effect on those 

around you. 

Be the Force! In today’s world of 

social media we are always on stage. 

Be aware that you’re being watched 

and followed every day. That means 

demonstrating the attitudes and 

behaviors you want to see in others. 

Walk the talk and talk the walk. As 

you beam with perspective, integrity, 

passion and resilience, let the light of 

your leadership bring out your best so 

you can be proud of who you are and 

who you inspire others to be. 

Own it! Everyone makes mistakes. 

We are human. Own those mistakes 

and move on. When you show 

accountability for your actions, you will 

influence those around you to take 

responsibility for theirs. Don’t make 

excuses and blame others. It’s a form 

of bad leadership that creates a toxic 

environment and can lead to mistrust. 

People do business and want to be 

around others who they know, like 

and trust. People are watching. This 

is your chance to be the leader that 

demonstrates to others how to handle 

both success and failure. 

Remind yourself every day that your 

leadership is contagious. Your actions, 

words, attitude, how you carry yourself, 

are reflected unto others. Think and 

rethink how you show up. Don’t lose 

yourself. Be who you really are and 

don’t make excuses. Lead from within. 

Every time you exhibit motivating 

leadership to those who surround 

you, it moves us forward in creating 

a better world and presents us as the 

next agents of change. The world is 

watching….be your best you!

March is absolutely the best time of year 

to be in Arizona. This is why we live here, 

isn’t it? In light of the promise of spring, 

I hope you’ll join me in celebrating the 

vision of better times ahead for all of us in 

business. 

Be assured your Chamber board and staff 

are working hard behind the scenes to help 

our members get back to business as usual. 

In that regard, planning for longstanding 

events like the Community Awards are 

well under way. The past year won’t stop 

us from taking the time to recognize 

the achievements of local businesses, 

community leaders, teachers, police officers 

and firefighters. If you have someone you 

think should be recognized please do 

so here! Mark your calendars for June 4 

because I happen to know the committee is 

planning something fun for us all. 

Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion 

committee continues to have important 

discussions around best practices for 

businesses to create a culture of inclusion 

and understanding. The Chamber is making 

sure we as an organization are doing the 

same. I’d like to personally thank Dr. Bill 

Crawford and Tyler Conaway for bringing 

their expertise to next month’s general 

Board meeting to make sure Chamber 

leadership understands and implements 

the same principles. 

Our up and coming workforce needs 

to be ready as well. Our school systems 

are top notch, and so are our businesses. 

The Chamber is offering a platform to 

ensure the two are working in synch, with 

the ultimate goal of providing excellent 

jobs to our graduates, and a strong, 

educated workforce for our employers. 

The Chamber’s Education & Workforce 

committee is hosting a roundtable in 

partnership with Diversity and Inclusion 

to make sure the needs of students and 

businesses are working together. 

Speaking of which, this is just one 

of many industry-specific roundtables 

that take a deep dive into the needs of 

business. The roundtables are limited to 

people directly involved in each industry 

to ensure the discussion is both relevant 

and thoughtful. Check out the Roundtables 

on the March calendar to join your peers 

for focused discussions around Hospitality, 

Restaurants, Call Centers, Services or 

Manufacturing. 

Of course, we aren’t all work, and what 

would a March celebration be without 

St. Patrick’s Day? This month we salute 

our Sister City, Tullamore, Ireland, and 

the burgeoning craft whiskey market in

Arizona first in Country 

to experience interactive 

tour of Auschwitz 

Arizona groups and organizations 

are the first in the country to 

be offered the opportunity 

to experience a live tour of 

Auschwitz in a unique and personal 

educational experience. The 

Center for Holocaust Education, a 

division of the East Valley Jewish 

Community Center (EVJCC) 

has partnered with a long-time 

Auschwitz-Birkenau tour guide to 

bring this 2-hour live seminar and 

interactive tour from Poland. Tour 

guide Dr. Jerzy Wójcik reimagined 

how to educate the world by 

taking his experience, images 

and education and creating 

an interactive walk-through of 

Auschwitz. The tour is available to 

groups with a minimum 25 people 

for $30 per person. Discounts are 

available for multiple tours and 

schools. This includes an hour-long 

pre-tour seminar, and the personal, 

live tour with Jerzy Wójcik, and 

a question and answer session. 

The EVJCC is also developing 

partnerships with businesses 

that would like to participate or

The Chandler/Gilbert Family 

YMCA has been a Chandler 

Chamber member for 46 years. It 

has a rich history of serving the 

community the through their 

programs, services and initiatives, 

continuing to enable kids to 

realize their potential, assist senior 

citizens and empower people to 

be healthier in spirit, mind and 

body. 

The YMCA continues to offer 

all programs and services offered 

pre-pandemic in an adapted 

capacity. Garrett Brolsma,

businesses by offering funds for 

employee retention, hiring and 

personal protective equipment 

as well as supported non-profits 

and social service programs 

serving residents in need. 

The allocation of $9.5 million 

toward the I Choose Chandler 

Business Hiring and Retention 

Program provided relief to 544 

Chandler businesses in 2020. In 

partnership with the Chandler 

Industrial Development Authority, 

the City reimbursed 230 Chandler 

businesses a total of $103,548 

for their purchase of personal 

protective equipment. Thanks to 

our program with the Chamber, 

more than 500 businesses 

received personal protective 

equipment kits. 

The multi-faceted “I Choose 

Chandler” marketing initiative 

supported local businesses and 

informed the community of the 

impact residents make when they 

choose to spend their money and 

volunteer their time in Chandler. 

As we work to recover 

from the pandemic, we will 

continue to develop innovative 

programs and partnerships 

to support the community.

Filing Taxes in 2021 

T he IRS wants you to know 

about the existence of the Free 

File program and the importance 

of electronic filing and direct 

deposit (if a refund). There are 

also lots of questions surrounding 

the Economic Impact Payments 

and many people may not know 

that if they were eligible for the 

payments but did not receive them 

for any reason, they can claim the 

Recovery Rebate Credit when they 

file their 2020 tax return. 

Other items to check when filing: 

Taxpayers can start filing now: 

Electronic filing, including Free File 

is the best way to avoid pandemicrelated 

paper delays. E-filing 

combined with direct deposit is the 

fastest way to get a refund. 

Recovery Rebate Credit: If you’re 

eligible – and either didn’t receive 

Economic Impact Payments or if you 

think you qualify for more than you 

received – you’ll need to file a 2020 

tax return and claim the Recovery 

Rebate Credit even if you otherwise 

are not required to file a tax return. 

Earned Income Tax Credit: The 

EITC can give qualifying workers 

with low-to-moderate income a 

substantial financial boost. EITC 

not only reduces the amount of 

tax someone owes but may give 

them a refund even if they don’t 

owe any taxes or aren’t required to 

file a return. 

Important change for EITC: 

Taxpayers may use their 2019 earned 

income to figure the EITC if they 

earned more in 2019 than in 2020. 

• IRS reminds taxpayers to 

double-check to ensure they have 

all their tax documents (W-2 and 

1099) before filing a tax return; these 

forms are available online, but, if 

unavailable, taxpayers who haven’t 

received a W-2 or Form 1099 should 

contact the employer, payer or 

issuing agency directly to request 

the missing documents. 

Self-employed individuals can 

now claim their sick & family leave 

tax credits due to COVID-19 on the 

new IRS Form 7202. 

Choose a tax preparer wisely. 

Most tax return preparers provide 

outstanding service. The IRS urges 

taxpayers to check their tax return 

preparer’s qualifications and history. 

Choose wisely because you are 

responsible for all the information 

on your income tax return. 

Eligible educators can deduct 

COVID-19 unreimbursed protective 

item expenses incurred after March 

12, 2020 to stop the spread of the 

virus in the classroom.

Joan Saba 

We would like to wish Joan Saba and 

her twin sister Jeanie, a very happy 

birthday this month! The name “Saba” 

is an icon not only in Chandler, but 

the entire Valley. Saba’s Western Wear, 

owned by the Saba family, has been in 

Chandler since 1927. 

Joan married David Saba in 1954 

and took over the management of the 

store. Joan has been involved with the 

Chandler Chamber since 1985. She is 

a life member of the Chandler Service 

Club, served on two land update 

committees, the Cultural Foundation 

Board and helped to organize the 

Downtown Chandler Community 

Partnership. Joan has served on the 

Board of Directors for the Desert 

Cancer Foundation, Historical Society, 

Fresh Start for Women and Positive 

Paths. She has served two terms on 

the Chamber’s Board of Directors and 

in 2007 was named to the board of 

the Chandler Chamber’s Community 

Foundation, serving as president from 

2009 to 2011. 

Joan is still serves as an advisor 

for the Foundation Board and 

continues to give 150% to any 

organization she serves on. If Dr. A.J. 

Chandler founded Chandler, Joan 

continues his legacy through her 

commitment and involvement with 

the community.

The Chandler Chamber Community Foundation Leadership Institute is back in 

action! Class 37 participants came together for Orientation last month, where the 

class had the opportunity to participate in a number of leadership development 

workshops and activities focusing on Remote Leadership, Effective Communication 

Techniques, and understanding Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. 

This year’s class is led by Class 36 participants who completed year 1 of the 

program back in 2019. Planning and leadership efforts of Class 36 are spearheaded 

by our four Quad Chairs who have gone above and beyond, continuing to serve 

within the Leadership Institute program as we’ve navigated the transition to virtual 

and hybrid programming.

Molly is Celebrated her 3-year anniversary with 

GoDaddy in November of 2020 with prior leadership 

in sales and marketing. Molly brings a wealth of 

experience from both large companies like PayPal 

and MCI telecommunications and starting up 

companies like KnowledgeNET and PCA SKIN along 

with owning her own company. 

Molly has a Bachelor of Arts in Human Resource 

Management with an emphasis in Marketing 

from Briar Cliff University. She has completed her 

Marketing certification at Harvard University

Rick Heumann is a long time 

Chandler resident with a prolific 

background in community 

service and civic engagement. 

The former Chandler Vice 

Mayor and Councilmember 

served on the City Council from 

2008-2016. Rick is the current 

chairperson of the City of 

Chandler Planning and Zoning Commission. 

During his Council tenure he created the Chandler 

Education Coalition, that led to the creation of the 

popular Chandler Science Spectacular technology 

festival. He was also integral in working with the 

Coalition to develop the Read On Chandler early 

stage literacy campaign. 

Additionally, he has served in a number of 

appointed capacities on both the local and regional 

levels, including six years on the Board of the Arizona 

Municipal Water Users Association where he held 

the longest tenured position as the association’s 

president at two and a half years. He also served 

six years on the Regional Public Transportation 

Association’s Board of Directors. 

He has worked as a sales manager for CMA, a 

manufacturer’s representative group in the home 

furnishings industry throughout the western United 

States. Rick has chaired the Chamber’s Public Policy 

Committee and is the Incoming Board Chair for 2022.

early on her calling was to be an 

attorney. She has always loved

Tullamore is arguably 

the most central town 

in Ireland, located 

half way between 

Dublin and Galway. 

It is a thriving town with a 

population of about 15,000 

and serves as a gateway to the 

midlands. Prosperity came in the 

form of the Grand Canal, a link 

from the port of Dublin in 1798. 

Tullamore has its share of 

prestigious architecture with St 

Catherine’s Gothic Revival church 

of 1818, and the Charleville Castle, 

standing in a woodland containing 

many splendid oak trees. Visitors 

to the town can learn about its 

history through the Tullamore 

Town Historical Audio Tour. 

Situated on the Grand Canal, 

it is a popular destination for 

fisherman. The Tullamore Golf 

Clubs offer pristine courses in 

scenic surroundings while others 

sports enjoyed in Tullamore 

include Gaelic Football, Soccer 

and Rugby. For hikers, hillwalkers 

and lovers of the great 

outdoors, Tullamore is an ideal 

base to explore the Slieve Bloom 

Mountains. 

The town’s most famous export 

is Tullamore Dew – an Irish 

whiskey distilled by Tullamore 

Distillery – that can be traced 

back to 1829. The town also 

celebrates the Phoenix Festival, 

brought on by the success of the 

local economy. The Phoenix is 

now the town’s coat of arms. 

Sister Cities was born in 1956 

when President Eisenhower and 

100 prominent Americans created 

the People to People initiative. 

They believed if the individual 

would cross international 

borders and befriend people 

in other countries that better 

understanding would promote 

world peace. This initiate soon 


led to the forming of Sister Cities 

International which aims to 

promote peace through mutual 

respect, understanding and 

cooperation, one individual at a 

time. 

The Sister City Mission is to 

cultivate and maintain a strong 

reciprocal relationship between 

the cities of Chandler, Arizona and 

Tullamore, Ireland to encourage: 

Cultural Understanding, 

Community Involvement, 

Economic Development and 

Educational Exchanges. Jack 

Sellers is the Chandler Sister Cities 

President. “The main thrust of a 

Sister Cities Organization, learning 

cultures and building relationships 

with people in other countries, 

is very satisfying. But using those 

relationships as a bridge for 

international understanding and 

to develop mutually beneficial 

economic ties is becoming more 

critical in our evolving global 

economy,” said Sellers. 

Efforts to “twin” the two 

cities began in 2008 with 

the signing of the Sister 

Cities’ agreement finalized 

in 2009. The two cities 

explored opportunities 

to share education, 

culture, diversity and 

economic development. 

This relationship 

provides opportunities 

for citizens and City 

officials to experience 

and explore the Irish 

culture through a longterm 

partnership. This 

includes encouraging 

business-to-business 

relationships and hosting 

visiting delegations.

COVID-19 Vaccinations 

Chandler-Gilbert 

Community College’s 

Pecos Campus is 

currently serving as 

a point of dispensing 

(POD) for COVID-19 

vaccinations, operated 

by the Maricopa County 

Department of Public 

Health and Dignity 

Health. In addition to allowing 

Chandler-Gilbert to serve the 

community, hosting this POD 

has provided a unique hands-on 

learning opportunity for CGCC 

nursing students. 

In order to put their skills 

to good use, Chandler- 

Gilbert nursing students are 

provided with the opportunity 

to volunteer at the POD in a 

variety of capacities, including 

administering COVID-19 vaccines, 

monitoring patients for adverse 

reactions and educating patients 

on the vaccine and vaccination 

process. Students volunteer for 

12-hour shifts, putting the skills 

learned in their courses into 

practice in order to support our 

already-stretched healthcare 

professionals. Beyond the patient 

experience, nursing students are 

coached and trained by Dignity 

Health nurses before beginning 

their shifts. 

“I personally administered 42 

shots during my shift,” said CGCC 

nursing student Jill Fagan. “In 

a normal block 1 clinical, I may 

have been able to perform 5-10 

injections over the course of a

semester. This experience gave me 

confidence in administering shots 

and courage to practice my other 

nursing skills.” 

CGCC’s nursing program is 

approved by the Arizona State 

Board of Nursing and accredited 

by the Accreditation Commission 

for Education in Nursing (ACEN). 

“One of our primary goals is to 

serve our community, and the

The Chandler Chamber of Commerce, via a contract with 

the City of Chandler, is distributing I Choose Chandler PPE 

(personal protective equipment) Kits to Chandler businesses 

who qualify for the program. 

The Chandler City Council authorized the use of $500,000 

of Arizona Cares Act funding for the purchase and distribution of personal 

protective equipment (PPE) to Chandler businesses to further protect the 

public health during the current emergency. “Protecting public health has 

been Council’s top priority throughout the pandemic,” said Chandler Mayor 

Kevin Hartke. “The I Choose Chandler PPE Kit Program is another way the City 

continues to create innovative programs to keep employees and patrons safe 

while providing much needed assistance to our business community.” 

The PPE Kit consists of the following: 

• Two (2) boxes of 50 each 3-Ply Non-Medical Face 

Mask with Ear-Loop 

• One (1) automatic hand sanitizer dispenser 

with Stand 

• One (1) hand Sanitizer, 1 Gallon 

Chandler businesses must meet the 

following criteria to be eligible: 

• Be a registered business with the City of Chandler 

• Business must be located in the municipal 

boundary of the City of Chandler 

• Have 100 or less employees 

• The following are excluded from qualifying: Non- 

Profits, home based businesses, vacation rentals, 

rentals of commercial property, internet based 

businesses, kiosks or vending businesses, car service 

provider (i.e. Uber, Lyft, other taxi service)

has chaired the Ostrich Festival going on 7 years. He
