Manukura Kōrero
Mā te kimi ka kite, Mā te kite ka mōhio, Mā te mōhio ka mārama Seek and
discover. Discover and know. Know and become enlightened.
Our focus on hautūtanga/leadership in 2021 provides us with exciting opportunities
to identify and grow some of our kura’s strong and capable leaders. The
2021 school year began well with positive numbers of senior ākonga in years
11 to 13 returning to kura to continue their studies for NCEA. Ākonga success
in 2020 was very positive with greater numbers of ākonga achieving NCEA
Credits at Levels 1, 2, 3.
Our ākonga are to be commended on their commitment to study and their
improved results. Junior school hautūtanga/leadership continues to grow from
strength to strength. An exciting innovation in 2021is the launch of our Intermediate
School structure for Years 7 & 8. Housed in Korepo the Year 7 & 8
ākonga are working with kanmahi to co-construct a dynamic ako/learning space
that allows them to enjoy all the advantages of an Area School environment
with the added focus on those important intermediate years. Whānau are
invited to attend the weekly assemblies to catch a glimpse of the exciting mahi
covered at this level. The school roll has increased this year and as a result we
have welcomed a number of new kaimahi to our kura. The Board’s specialisation
employment policy has provided us the opportunity to employ Specialists
in Chemistry, ESOL and Te Reo Māori.
Our first month of Term 1 has been challenging. We joined with the people
of Ōtautahi to commemorate the lives lost in the 2011 Earthquake and then
moved again into COVID-19 Alert Level 2. I am so proud of our ākonga and all
they have achieved in the few shorts weeks we have been back at kura. with a
real sense of pride in the young men and women who make this the remarkable
school that it is!
I want to thank you as whānau for sharing
with us your greatest gift – your tamariki and
rangatahi. They live in a pressurized world
and are often expected to be old before their
years. As a community we need to let them
be “kids.” They have a lifetime of responsibility
ahead of them – so for now let’s allow
them to focus on schoolwork, homework,
sport and cultural activities and most importantly
positive age appropriate relationships.
It is going to be a great year and I am looking
forward to working with you and for you in
the best interests of all.
Charlotte Burrell
Haeata Community Campus warmly congratulates
Haeata Student Charlotte Burrell on the publication
of her witty piece of writing, ‘The Janitor’s
Office’. This has been published in the yearly journal
Re-Draft. Re-Draft is a nationally acclaimed
collection of teenagers’ writing, published each
year by Clerestory Press.
Any New Zealand teenager can enter work
using the form found in the back of the current edition of Re-Draft. Entries can be any
creative writing genre and will be judged by award winning New Zealand writers. This
accomplishment is a credit to Charlotte’s hard work, and we are so proud of her!
Student Leadership 2021
Whaia e koe ki te iti kahurangi; ki te tuohu koe, me maunga teitei
Seek the treasure you value most dearly; if you bow your head, let it be to a
lofty mountain.
On Tuesday 2 March, we celebrated the appointment of our student leaders. This is the
second year that Haeata Community Campus has had student leaders and we are so
pleased with the culture change this is instilling at Kura. The event was a great mana-enhancing
event for our ākonga, whānau, and kaimahi as we celebrated their appointment. Our hospitality
pathway students also put on a great spread for our guests to enjoy afterwards.
We congratulate our 2021 Student Leaders as they embark on an exciting adventure leading
our school, and being an example to our ākonga in 2021.
Haka Off 2021
Two of our Pathway programs: Services Academy and Mangopare Senior
Sports Programme performed a haka off at Haeata. Services have their own
Haka, and the composer of the Aranui Community Sports Haka gifted it to
the school for our sports teams.
This was a great opportunity for our ākonga to explore Te Ao Māori, Haka,
and Collaboration. Soon our seniors will support our juniors to learn each
haka as well, to build a supportive and culturally aware kura. We are so excited
to see where our ākonga go in these amazing programmes.
