The majority of the adult population in British Columbia is expected to have access to immunization by the start of most Selkirk College programs in September. Health and safety protocols will remain the priority at Selkirk College with reducing the opportunity for infectious contacts a key component to revised plans. With the safety of all who arrive on campuses the number-one priority, what will remain in place is the now-familiar prevention activities of self-administered health checks, facilitating hand cleaning through access to soap and water, encouraging the use of hand sanitizers, use of masks, physical distancing, early detecting and rapid testing, and case and contact management. As the college moves forward in its planning for a safe return to campus in September 2021, there will be further details on what this means for specific programs, services and activities provided in the coming weeks. To continue meeting its strategic goals of access, Selkirk College will also incorporate what has been learned over the last year with regards to providing delivery of programming that is available to a wider cohort of students. “I have been inspired by the ability of our faculty and staff to adapt to the situation while continuing to ensure that students are delivered the education and training they need to succeed after graduation,” says Andrews. “We have learned so much about different ways to deliver programs and new light has been shed on how we can provide even better services that will enable learner success. Zebra mussels found in moss balls Anyone who has a moss ball in their aquarium is being asked to inspect the plant for invasive zebra mussels now that the highly invasive species has been found in a number of locations throughout the province. During the past weekend, conservation officers conducted more than 600 inspections at retail aquatic pet and plant stores and found zebra mussels in moss balls at multiple locations. Zebra mussels pose a major threat if released into a BC waterway. The tiny mussels can wreak havoc on aquatic ecosystems because they multiply rapidly and are extremely difficult to eradicate. The Conservation Officer Service (COS) is investigating how widespread the problem of mussel-infested moss balls may be in the province. The COS is working with ministry science experts, Canadian and US counterparts, industry retailers and distributors to help prevent any potential spread of invasive zebra mussels. To date, there has been no reported introduction of live zebra mussels into BC lakes or waterways. The moss balls, which are often sold as marimo moss balls, are species of green algae typically purchased for aquariums to improve water quality. Moss balls can also be purchased online. Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC Skiing for hope Teamwork is the fuel that makes Nelson CARES Society’s Coldest Night of the Year fundraising event such a success every year. The community comes together to make up teams of co-workers, family, friends, housemates or, this year, Nordic skiers. Nelson Nordic Ski Club put together a team that might have been powered by jet fuel. The team of seven cross-country skiers raised more than $8,750 – but that’s not all. On Saturday, February 20, the Nelson Nordic Ski Club donated another $345 from day pass revenue, bringing the total funds raised by the club to over $9,000. Each team member put in some serious distance. The youngest team member, Maya Abraham, 15, skied 50km on the day with her mom, Doris Hausleitner. Meanwhile, Richmond skied 100km with other team members Travis Hauck and James Crossman. Andrew Earnshaw rounded out the group, skiing 50 km. This year’s Nelson CARES Society CNOY fundraising campaign blew the roof off the previous fundraising numbers. Nelson ranked 31st out of those 149 locations on dollars raised. The Coldest Night of the Year fundraising event fully funds the Nelson CARES Society’s ‘Ready For Home’ program. At the core of ‘Ready For Home’ is a full-time paid staff member who works one-on-one with individuals to maintain their health and housing and prevent homelessness. This program assists Nelson CARES tenants with life skills development, connection to health services, employment and income support... anything that will help these residents stay housed in their affordable unit and off the streets. Nelson CARES Society preserves, maintains, and develops safe affordable housing, but sometimes a place to live is not enough and people need some support to maintain that housing.
