Third wave brings in grave threat

than first two- Opine experts

Edmonton(ATB): While

patios reopen in

hotspots across

Ontario and vaccines

roll out nationwide,

doctors are bracing for

the impact of a third

wave of the COVID-19

pandemic.

An Ontario

doctor isn't surprised to

have seen the number

of infections tick back

up as restrictions loosened

in the province in

February, and once the

variants took hold he

felt it was only a matter

of time until a third

wave of the pandemic.

Now, he says this wave

could be the worst yet.

Ontario's top

doctor declared this

week that the province

is entering its third

wave, while Alberta

and B.C. have not

made it official yet as

their infection rates

continue to increase.

"I think it's impossible

to avoid a

third wave that's likely

going to be worse than

the first two," infectious

disease specialist Dr.

Abdu Sharkawy told

CTV.

"Many of us

felt that this was an inevitability,"

he said.

"This is pretty much

the trap that this pandemic

has proven its

ability to present to us.

That's why we call

them waves, you get

lulled into a sense of

complacency and then

cases start picking

up."

This time, he

said, we're seeing the

virus hit harder in

places that have previously

handled it well.

"And of course we've

seen what these variants

can offer, they can

really lead to an explosion

of cases very

quickly," he said.

And it's not

just densely populated

hotspots that are facing

the brunt.

"Look what

happened in Thunder

Bay," he said, referring

to the northern Ont.

city where case numbers

recently reached

a peak, setting a new

daily record with 64

cases on March 1. The

previous record was

60 cases on Jan. 19,

and prior to that their

highest daily case

count was 33.

There are

many factors propelling

surges, but

Sharkawy points to the

slow vaccine rollout

and variants being the

main drivers of the

third wave.

"What we're

witnessing now is a bit

of a perfect storm," he

said, adding that complacency

with some of

the public health restrictions

isn't helping.

"There's an

element of fatigue that

has seeped into our

practices," he said.

"There is obviously an

ineffective rollout of

vaccines and the rapidity

that's needed to

meet the race that's

going on with the variants

and I think systemically

we haven't

done enough."

The third

wave is infecting

younger people this

time around.

"We're seeing

younger, healthier

people develop this

disease because

they're unvaccinated

and these variants are

just likely to hit them,

you don't know where

you're going to end up

on that dial and unfortunately

we're seeing

some pretty tragic consequences

of that."

He said the

number one driver to

beat back the wave will

be vaccines, and most

likely, another

lockdown."We don't

have enough vaccines

getting to us quickly

enough, we're getting

controversies with

things like

AstraZeneca, pushing

people away from vaccines

and vaccine

hesitancy is starting to

creep into this situation,"

he said.

In order to get

everyone vaccinated,

not only do we need

the supplies, but we

need a willing population,

he added.

Until we get

enough vaccines, a

lockdown will likely be

necessary to keep the

spread under control.

"I can't foresee any

other way of dealing

with this, it's just not

tenable," he said.

771 Covid variants of concern in India

but not enough to cause surge: Govt

New Delhi,

(ATB) The government

on Wednesday

said apex genome sequencing

body had

detected 771 Covid

variants of concern but

not in enough numbers

to be linked to the

surge some states like

Maharashtra, Kerala

and Punjab are witnessing.

The Indian

SARS-CoV-2 Consortium

on Genomics

(INSACOG), a grouping

of 10 National

Laboratories that was

established by Ministry

of Health, has been

carrying out genomic

sequencing and analysis

of circulating

Covid-19 viruses, and

correlating epidemiological

trends with genomic

variants.

Genomic variants

of various viruses

are a natural phenomenon

and are found in

almost all countries.

With daily Covid surge

continuing the government

on Wednesday

said since INSACOG

initiated its work, 771

variants of concerns

(VOCs) had been detected

in 10,787 positive

samples shared by

states and UTs.

“These include

736 samples

positive for viruses of

the UK (B.1.1.7) lineage;

34 samples

were found positive for

viruses of the South

African (B.1.351) lineage

and one sample

was found positive for

viruses of the Brazilian

(P.1) lineage. The

samples with these

VOCs have been identified

in 18 states of the

country.”

Genome sequencing

and analysis

have been carried out

on samples from arriving

international travellers,

contacts of those

positive for VOC and

community samples

from most of the states

at INSACOG partner

laboratories which are

10 in number.

“The analysis

of samples from

Maharashtra has revealed

that compared

to December 2020,

there has been an increase

in the fraction

of samples with the

E484Q and L452R

mutations. Such mutations

confer immune

escape and increased

infectivity. These mutations

have been

found in about 15-20

per cent of samples

and do not match any

previously catalogued

VOCs.

Star

Native village/Country, parent’s background

I was born in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India.

My father was the late Shri Nitya Nand Swami

was a lawyer who served as a member of the

Legislative Assembly for five years, a member

of the Legislative Council for 14 years,

Chairman of the Legislative Council for 12

years, and finally, as the first Chief Minister of

Uttarakhand until his retirement. My mother

was the late Smt. Chandra Kanta Swami, the

Inspector of Schools of all junior high schools

in Dehradun and the surrounding areas. She

spent her free time running the free school in

the area and was always willing to open our

home to the impoverished people in our

community. Being raised by parents who having

high values and ethics to serve community

taught me at a very young age as to how

important it is to give back to others.

Your early education

In 1978, I earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

degree from Gadhwal University, Dehradun,

India.

When & why you came to Canada?

In 1979, I married my husband, Preetam

Sharma, and I immigrated to Edmonton,

Alberta, Canada to start our family and our life

together.

What you did for initial survival?

Our oldest daughter, Priya, was born the year

after we arrived in Canada. When she was a

year old in 1981, I started working at the

Misericordia Hospital. I have been fortunate to

build a wonderful career there, and have been

at the Misericordia now for the last 38 years.

Your career advancement initiatives and

present occupation

I attended NAIT and completed the Supervisory

Development Program. I currently work at the

Misericordia Hospital in the operating room

booking office. I have also been involved in

community service and volunteer projects with

many nonprofit organizations, including serving

as President of the Hindu Society of Alberta,

which operates the North Edmonton Hindu

temple. As well as President of the Alberta Hindi

Association, where they teach Hindi to anyone

who wants to learn. Currently, I am the

President of Council of IndiaSocieties of

Edmonton(CISE).

Your regret in life

While I am happy and grateful to have been

able to build a life here in Canada, I do regret

that Igloo country is so cold.

Pick any one of your the best achievements

My greatest achievement is my family. My

children are generous, loving and successful,

and I am very proud of them. In regards to my

own personal achievements, I am proud to

have received the “Unsung Hero” Award by the

Council of India Societies in Edmonton in

appreciation of my services to the community.

Were you ever discriminated?

No. I am fortunate to have immigrated to an

accepting and inclusive Nation where people

of all backgrounds and beliefs are respected

and are welcome.

Gunjan Sharma

What you miss in Canada?

I miss my sisters and extended family the most

though. But I also miss day-to-day Indian culture

andfriends coming to visit all the time without preintimation.

Are you happy in Canada?

I am very happy here. Canada is a very peaceful

country and I love being part of it. I have spent

most of my life here and I consider it my home

country next to India. I am privileged and prideful

that I am Grandma (“Nani”) and I love spending

my evenings with my granddaughters, Sloane,

Remi and Veda.

Any comments on Canada’s weather

The summers are very nice, but I still can’t get

used to the bone-chilling winters and abundant

snow. I try to go away to somewhere hot in the

wintertime if I can!

Any comments on Canada’s culture

I deeply appreciate the freedom and acceptance

that Canada offers. The values and beliefs of

minority cultures are accepted and respected,

even if they are not shared, and there is an

opportunity for everyone to find belonging here.

What brought you success in Canada?

Honesty, hard work, networking, the support of

family and friends, and the willingness to accept

new challenges. I place on record the unflinching

support of my significant half, Preetam Sharma.

Are you willing to help new comers and How?

I am always willing to help newcomers by offering

food or housing, as well as smaller things that

can help them prepare for life in Canada, such

as boots and winter clothing. I am also willing to

help newcomers find jobs and to connect them

to resources that will allow them to be successful

and lead joyful life.

Your message for Canadians of Asian origin

Never forget your origin and culture; these have

helped to shape who you are. You are lucky to

live in a country like Canada that is full of

opportunities and diverse cultures, so take every

opportunity that you can and make the most of it!

Always give back to society. Canadian

abundance is boon and share with needy to

evolve universal happiness.

stressed on the need to

of the economic and

said.

"While the Indian

Singh asked.

"If there is a

Covid resurgence

Exactly a year after India imposed

the world’s strictest lockdown in

order to contain Covid-19, the second

wave of the pandemic is spreading

across the country. The daily caseload

has reached around 47,000, the highest

in the past four months or so, even

as the fresh coronavirus infections have

been rising at a faster rate than the recoveries

for the past over 10 days. The

worst-affected states have started reimposing

restrictions, with Punjab enforcing

night curfew in the districts

where the situation is deteriorating fast.

The efficacy of such steps, however,

remains questionable.

The nationwide lockdown from

March-end to May-end last year had impacted

millions of lives as well as livelihoods.

The economy, which had

slipped into recession, is still struggling

to regain the pre-Covid growth rate.

Going by this nightmarish experience,

another lockdown is ruled out. The

Maharashtra Government has made it

clear that people must follow Covid-19

safety protocols if the state is to avoid

another lockdown. This holds true for

the rest of the country as well. The basic

drill — wearing masks, washing

hands and maintaining social distancing

— is still as relevant, if not more, as

it was a year ago. The violators should

be strictly dealt with as per the law so

that it deters others from becoming

reckless. Even though the election season

is in full swing, the onus is on political

leaders to encourage Covid-appropriate

behaviour at rallies and exhort

their supporters to arrange smaller

gatherings. Political and social congregations

that turn out to be superspreaders

of the virus will jeopardise

India’s valiant fight against the pandemic.

It is also critical to extend the

vaccination programme beyond the

limit of 45 years set by the Centre on

Tuesday. People in the working age

group (25-60 years) need to be covered

at the earliest so that they can keep

contributing to economic recovery without

the fear of getting infected. Though

the daily caseload is rising, it is nowhere

near the peak of around 98,000 that

was witnessed in September last year.

This should inspire confidence among

all stakeholders and spur them to

minimise the damage caused by the

second wave.

Indian street food

cravings – not anymore

Yes, you heard it right!!!! Let me take you through what I came across and how it

has addressed my deepest cravingfrom my days in India. When we move to

another country from India, we miss our families and friends and other things we

left behind. But there is one thing that we all can agree on that we miss

unanimously, our very own Street Food!!!! You name it - Paanipuri, pavbhaji,

masala sandwich, bhajiya, kathi rolls, paneer tikka, dosa, masala chaietc etc...

I am already drooling as I reminisce and write this, and I am sure you

might be too as you read these names that bring back vivid memories and

nostalgia. Most of us surfYouTube videos to learn and cook these, but it’s never

the same. Well now the wait is over. Introducing- Bombay Talkiz – the one stop

shop for your street food cravings, as owners Girish and PunitaPandit state. Chefs

Kedar and Yash, who carry a deep passion for food and culinary skills from India

promise to deliver street foods to your palate’s fancy.

We had the pleasure of

trying some delectable dishes. The

Pani Puri is just perfect to satisfy

your taste buds, you’ll want to keep

drinking the pani long after the puris

are gone. The Paneer Tikka and

Soya chaap are done to perfection

maintaining the softness, the texture

and the haunting tandoori flavour.

The Masala Dosa tastes close to

homemade. Kathi rolls or Frankies

are quite a filling and nutritious

option as they not only satisfy your

taste buds but satiate your hungry tummy. The chicken masala and tandoori

options has a kick that stays with you, long after you leave the restaurant.Overall

Bombay Talkizdon’t fail to impress further with their ambiance and reflections of

great movies –bringing you back yesteryearsTalkiznostalgia all the way.
