Please givea thought to those who suffer witha hearing loss when conversingthrough a mask.The most common type of hearingloss in adults is sensorineural. Thisis a permanent irreversible hearingloss that occurs when there is damage to eitherthe stereocilia (tiny hair cells found in the innerear) or the auditory nerve itself. The mostcommon type of sensorineural hearing loss ispresbycusis which affects the hair cellsassociated with the higher frequencies. Highfrequencies are especially important when itcomes to speech comprehension. Speechsounds can be simply divided into twocategories - consonants and vowels - with therebeing 5 times more consonants than vowels inour alphabet. Consonants are found in thehigher frequencies of our speech spectrum - theparts that are usually damaged with asensorineural loss - and are usually used at thebeginning and ends of wordsSo, whilst it may be beneficial to speak slightlylouder to those with a hearing impairment,volume does not give clarity. Instead of raisingyour voice, concentrate on speaking moreCLEARLY. Also, try to move away frombackground noise such as busy roads. Mostpeople with a hearing loss miss the beginningand ends of words. This is wherethe "silent"consonants are - the sss, shh, p, phh, k, h, g, ffff,ch, lll, li, la, mmm, nn, ti, th. See how manytimes you use these types of sounds at thebeginning and ends of a sentence or word -you'll be amazed!So, remember, not only is it problematic forthose with a hearing impairment to followconversations in normal times, they now havethe added burden of trying to hear you clearlythrough a mask!Most of all though, be patient.
