Formedin1915, theWomen'sInstitutewas
originallybrought to life to revitaliserural
communitiesand encouragewomen to
becomemoreinvolvedinproducingfood
duringthe First WorldWar. Sincethenthe
organisation's aims have broadened andthe
WI is nowthe largestvoluntarywomen's
organisation in theUK.
TakingpartinLymington Carnival
LymingtonWI, whichmeets on thesecond
Wednesday morningofthe month, has
around 70 members. As well as a
programme of monthlyspeakers andother
activities, we normally have twobook
groups,abakinggroup,craft group, social
groupwithdartsand skittles, andawalking
group, as well as in bettertimes arranging
monthlycinemavisitstothe MaltCinema.
Currentlyunabletomeetfacetoface, we
have developedour monthlye-newsletter
andpaper newsletterand startedholding
monthlymeetings by Zoom.Weare looking
forward to meeting properly againand
meanwhile welcome enquiriesfrom

Whats nottolike?
TransitionLymington is alocalgroup taking action
to create amoresustainableSO41, as part of the
globalTransitionTownsmovement. Formedin
2008, we are anot-for-profit,non-political, diverse
andfriendlybunch. We meet once amonth in the
eveningtoorganiseeducational andskill sharing
eventstoreducewaste andimprove wherewelive.
Ourprojectsand events include:
Jean Genieworkshops to reuseold jeansand
denim.
LymingtonRepair Cafe,where ourvolunteer
expertswillhelprepair your item.
ClothesSwaps - foreveryone to come and
regeneratetheirwardrobe
Sowing Seedsfor LocalFood - sharing skills and
informationongrowing some of your ownfood
PenningtonCommunity Allotment - akeen group
of sowers,growers andrecipemakerswho learn
fromeachother.Theyalsocollaborateondifferent
acitizen scienceproject or trialeach year.
BoomerangBags - upcyclingfabrics to make
washable,reusableshopping bags.Currently we are
making bags alongside othergroups acrossthe
forest area,togivetothe NewForestBasics Bank.
This will help them remove single use plastic bags
fromtheir deliveries.
Recycling - we promoteNFDCclear sack recycling,
but also have an additional listofitems,supporting
localgroups andcharities.
Ournewsfor 2021 is that we arejoining forceswith
localchurches andorganisationstoorganise the
firsttown-wide GreenWeek. We areplanningover
15 events to encourageeveryone to live more
sustainably, youcan findout more at
