Royden Woods Nature ReserveAWalk bySuzanne AshworthAccessedvia :Sandy Down,Lymington,SO418PL ;1mileSEofBrockenhurstOS MapSU315009386 hectaresoflowland pasture,heath andwoodland with bridleways andpermissivepaths –variousroutesand canbemuddy off themaintracks.Managed by the Hampshire andIsleofWight WildlifeTrust,thisreserve is ahaven of peace,particularlyoffofthe roughunsurfaced tracks –someare steepand often muddy,but themainbridleways are gravelled. Access points includefromthe A337 nearthe FillyInn via abridleway,fromTile Barn Lane or Sandy Down Lane, behind thechurchatBoldreorfromRoundhillcampsite.You canfollowthree waymarked routes –yellow,blue andorange.Kindlydonatedtothe Wildlife Trust (www.hwt.org.uk)in1978 by PeterBarker-Mill, this reservewasalsoonceowned by NetleyAbbey.Banks andditchesshowevidenceofits historyand youmay comeacrosssigns of pitsawing, charcoal burningand brick-making as well as relics ofcottagesand otherbuildings.Duringthe SecondWorld Warthere were campsinthe woods inpreparationfor D-Day andthe land wasalsousedfor training in jungle warfare.Inrecentyears apopular Wood Fair hasbeenheldhereannuallysohopefully this will be back in 2021,all beingwell. TheWildlifeTrust motto is protecting wildlife,inspiring people andthisistruly evidentinRoyden Woods.DesignatedaSite of SpecialScientific Interest,these woods arerenownedfor autumn colour,themany bluebellsinspringand as awonderfulplace to simply escape andfind tranquillity.Thereare many ancient treesamongst thecopses andareas of beeches, conifers andhazel.Tragically, theash treeshereare sufferingfromthe fast-spreading ashdie-back,which is killingup to 95% of ashtrees as thereisnodefence to itsfungalattack.Withsporesabletotravelupto10 miles, hymenoscyphus fraxineus (asthisdisease is named) wasabletocomeintothe UK until2012 due to theimportofash treesfrominfectedareas.The Trustare workingtoclear diseasedtrees andthere is sadlymuchevidenceofits damage in Royden woods.The only hope is that theresistanttrees will fight back andre-populatewoodlandoverthe next 50 years–meanwhile,theimpact will become ever more visible.Continued.Entrance to reserve Please mentionThe from SandyDown Lymington Directory Bluebellswhen responding Evidence to advertisementsof Ashdie back9
