OPINION 23
Selling water makes
no sense
Water is our most valuable
resource and this is without
any question for every New
Zealander.
ECan/Canterbury Regional
Council gave a non-notified
resource consent licence to
‘Cloud Ocean Water’ (Ling
Yun Hai of Rizhao in China) to
take up to 4.32 million litres of
water daily, from the Kaputone
Aquifier, which is located at
Belfast.
At an annual ECan licence
fee of NZ$2277 pa or NZ$6.24
daily.
This PVC bottled water is
subsequently sold in China
at convenience stores and in
supermarkets for RMB8.46 per
litre (equivalent to NZ$1.84 per
litre).
I respectfully suggest that
The Star readers can do the
mathematics here.
This makes absolutely no sense
for the people of Christchurch or
the wider Canterbury region in
effect it is ‘absolute madness’ at a
very high level.
ECan/Canterbury Regional
Council is charged to look after
the resources of this region for
the benefit of all the people
living in Christchurch and
Canterbury.
Question for the Environment
Canterbury chair: What is the
ongoing regional benefit to the
residents of Christchurch for
this ECan ‘non-notified’ water
mining consent as given to Ling
Yun Hai of Rizhao? – A White
