how it felt to be back in lockdown again. 

When I wrote my first lockdown article, I said I 

hoped that by the time it had gone to print, we 

would be back to “normal”. Sadly, that didn’t quite 

pan out. Thankfully there is now light at the end 

of the tunnel so hopefully this will be my last 

lockdown update… 

Uni-boy is back. Again. Back in his old room (pig 

sty), rent free. Not that I’m bitter. I love the mess. 

The wet towels on his bedroom floor. The sodden 

bathmat that never gets hung up to dry. The crumbs 

that litter the kitchen floor directly under the treat 

cupboard that he, allegedly, never goes in. The 

endless yogurt pot scraping. 

At least now he has learnt to cook and pretty 

much feeds himself. Just after he moved back 

in, there was a shout from the kitchen and I went 

rushing in – what’s up? “I’ve left my Bircher pot 

in Loughborough.” There was silence while we 

processed this remark and he realised how poncey 

he sounded. Wow Uni-boy, you’ve changed. What’s 

wrong with Crunchy Nut cornflakes? 

Youngest son is trying to get a part time job (about 

time). He gets notifications from Indeed and when 

reading one, he commented on the pay being really 

good. Really Frankie? What makes you think that? 

“Well, it says sick pay”. Not sure the world of work 

is ready for him yet! 

Previously, I moaned about Zoom chats and my 

total incompetence at using this technology. Well, 

Lockdown

fast forward a year and get me, doing online fitness 

classes, having pub nights and even giving virtual 

presentations. I totally miss the gym, but there are 

some advantages of keeping fit in your bedroom. 

When you have to drop to the floor for press ups, 

if you position the camera at the right angle, you 

can sneak a few crisps and have a quick breather 

incognito. So I’ve heard anyway… 

During lockdown no.1 I shared the horrific images 

of my old dog, Harry looking embarrassed – half 

clipped, half dreadlocked. Well, things have 

improved on that front. We now have a proper 

grooming kit. In fact, Harry now has the smartest 

haircut in the whole house. Luckily, we can all wear 

woolly hats for at least another month or so. 

One good thing to have emerged from being locked 

down again – I have become house proud. Yes 

indeed. Whilst eating crisps on the floor during a 

HIIT class, a large cloud of dog fur wafted past my 

nose. Enough was enough. I grabbed my cleaning 

caddy (yes, I do have one) and started from the top 

floor, working my way down. No room remained 

untouched. And the weird bit…I ENJOYED IT!!!! 

Although the house has benefitted from lockdown, 

my appearance has taken a further nose dive, if 

that were even possible. Dog walking clothes have 

become the new black. Hair gets washed once a 

week – surely that will stop the colour fading so 

quickly won’t it?? If I am really pushing the boat out, 

I will put my best Christmas PJ’s on for the weekend 

and float around my gleaming house smugly 

sipping prosecco. You’ve got to get your kicks 

somehow, right? 

Lockdown, you have a lot to answer for.

Rehana’s Recipes 

I have been shopping at Rajah 

Foods in Sherwood for years. 

I actually remember the shop 

opening in 2013 and being 

really excited. I love cooking 

Asian food and was delighted 

that I would no longer have 

to travel far to load up on 

the ingredients. 

Rajah has a butchers at the 

back of the shop and a great 

selection of fresh fruit and veg, 

as well as a mind boggling 

array of herbs and spices, 

rice and breads and snacks 

and nibbles. And if you are 

really, really lucky and time it 

right you can also buy fresh, 

homemade samosas and 

pakora. But you have to be 

quick. The minute they arrive 

they are snapped up. 

Apart from the fact that the 

produce is really great value 

and fantastic quality, buying 

local has never been so 

important and Rajah now also 

offer a delivery service. 

Owner and all-round lovely 

lady, Rehana was delighted 

to share three of her favourite 

recipes with us this month. 

They are all delicious and 

easy to cook and you can 

get everything you need from 

Rajah Foods. Just a note 

about the recipes – Rehana 

uses a normal cup as a 

measure. I used a small mug 

for the lentils and Sarah used 

an American cup measure 

for the bhajis. As long as you 

use the same cup for all parts 

of the recipe you won’t go 

far wrong.

Tadka Dal 

(Red Lentil Soup) 

PART ONE 

1 cup – red lentils 

½ medium onion – diced 

1 medium tomato – diced 

1 tsp turmeric 

1 tsp salt 

1 tsp ginger paste 

1 tsp garlic paste 

1 tsp chilli powder (optional) 

3 whole green chillies 

2 x bay leaves 

3 dessert spoons sunfl ower oil 

PART TWO 

½ medium onion – diced 

65g butter 

1 tsp cumin seeds 

5 x garlic cloves – crushed 

Fresh coriander 

Method 

Wash lentils and place in a large 

saucepan with 2 cups of boiling 

water (if you want a thick dal) or 

4 cups (if you want a soup). 

Add salt, turmeric, garlic and 

ginger pastes, oil, bay leaves 

and whole chillies. Add the 

tomato and onion and cook on a 

medium heat for 12-15 mins with 

the lid on, stirring occasionally. 

If you are making dal you should 

have a thick, custardy texture. 

If making soup it will be much 

runnier but the lentils should still 

be cooked. Then set aside. 

In a separate frying pan, 

melt the butter. Add diced 

onion, cumin and garlic and 

cook gently until the onion is 

caramelised and golden. Add 

this mixture to the lentils and 

mix. Simmer for a further 5 

mins and garnish with chopped 

coriander. 

Delicious served with nan 

bread and yogurt or as part of a 

bigger meal. 

Onion Bhaji 

PART ONE 

4 x medium onion - sliced (not 

too thin/not too thick) 

1 x large potato - cut into very 

thin match sticks 

2 x finely chopped green 

chillies 

One handfull of chopped 

coriander 

One handfull chopped 

spinach 

1 heaped tsp ginger paste 

1 heaped tsp garlic paste 

2 tsp fenugreek seeds 

4 tsp curry powder 


1 tsp ground coriander 

1 tsp ground cumin 

1 tsp whole cumin seeds 

PART TWO 

4 x eggs (substitute for water 

for vegans) 

2 tsp salt 

2 cups of gram flour 

vegetable oil to fry (about 

500ml) 

Method 

Using your hands (with a 

disposable glove), mix all the 

ingredients from part one for 

3- 5 minutes until vegetables 

are all covered with spices. 

Add the eggs (or water) and 

mix for 3-4 minutes. Add the 

salt and mix. Add the gram 

flour and mix well until you 

get a sticky texture. Heat the 

oil in a pan (we used a deep 

frying pan). Wet your hands 

with some water and mould 

into golf ball size circles (do 

not squash the mix or the 

inside will become soggy) and 

place carefully into the oil. 

Reduce the heat if the oil gets 

too hot. You need the bhaji to 

cook inside as well. Crisp on 

a medium/low heat for 5 to 8 

minutes, until golden brown. 

Tandoori 

Chicken 

1 tsp salt 


1 tsp chilli powder 

1 tsp ground coriander 

1 tsp ground cumin 

½ tsp garam masala 

2 tsp garlic paste 

2 tsp ginger paste 

1 heaped tbsp tomato puree 

Juice of 1 x lemon 

8 tsp Pataks tikka spice 

marinade 

5 tbsp vegetable oil 

2 heaped tbsp plain yogurt 

900g-1400g chicken (wings or 

boneless thighs or breast) 

Method 

Mix all the ingredients (apart 

from the chicken) together in 

a bowl to form a paste. Mix 

the chicken into the paste. 

Leave to marinade for at least 

2 hours (overnight is best). 

When ready to cook, place 

under the grill, turning half 

way through until the chicken 

is fully cooked. This would 

also be delicious on a BBQ. 

We served with a yogurt and 

mint dip and salad.

motivations and expectations 

when interacting socially. 

We experience our environment differently: we may be 

over- or under-sensitive to noise, light, taste, smells, 

touch, proprioception and pain. We are also experts in 

the things that interest us, the value of which others 

may not comprehend. 

However, the rest of the world doesn’t seem to understand 

or appreciate this, so autistic people think that they are 

either not trying hard enough to integrate or they are 

failures. We become distressed with having to put up with 

all the sensory clamour in order to succeed in achieving our 

goals. We feel frustrated that we can’t give enough time for 

our interests because it seems everybody else’s priorities 

are more important than our own. 

We don’t get any support until we become a problem: 

children with noticeable learning disabilities or 

difficulties; adolescents with ‘challenging behaviours’; 

adults with mental health or social problems. 

Autistic Nottingham is run by autistic people. We 

provide advocacy, support and connection for adults 

who are struggling to find appropriate help when dealing 

with public services that others take for granted. Our 

advocacy team are skilled in ensuring that you are 

taken seriously by gatekeepers to support services. 

We provide a support network for those who may feel 

judged by others for needing support in what everybody 

else seems to cope with naturally. We also offer 

opportunities to meet and socialise with other autistic 

adults in a way that autistic adults prefer and enjoy.

There is something utterly renewing and rejuvenating about 

Spring, and for this year in particular, that feeling is more 

significant than ever. 

After months of miserable lockdown and 

cold dreary weather, now is the time 

to spruce up our homes, embracing 

the sunlight and energy that 

comes with the new season. 

Who doesn’t love a Spring clean? 

It feels so good to get everything in order with a 

full clear out and a refreshening of our homes, 

from clearing counter tops to finally cleaning the 

microwave or defrosting the freezer. 

One magical cleaning agent I’ve recently discovered 

is white wine vinegar. Vinegar is a natural 

disinfectant making it not only cheap to use but also 

eco-friendly. It has the ability to dissolve mineral 

deposit, grease, dirt, grime and bacteria. To clean 

the inside of your kitchen cupboards simply use 

equal parts of warm water with white wine vinegar 

in a spray bottle. Spray inside the cupboards then 

wipe down with a clean cloth. 

Declutter 

Research has shown that clutter and mess can 

cause anxiety and create stress - our brains like 

order. Now is the perfect time to help recharge 

our batteries and purge unnecessary items. When 

you start, and particularly if you are a natural 

hoarder, don’t be overwhelmed. It’s important 

to focus on one room, one space or even just a 

zone within a room (eg, your bathroom cabinet), 

completing the job fully before moving on. 

One simple trick to help you declutter is to use four 

empty cardboard boxes:- 

Box 1 - Put away 

This box is for items that have crept out of 

their storage spaces, this could be a cup in the 

bathroom or a jumper in the kitchen. 

Box 2 – Donate 

This is for the charity shop and are items you can 

imagine another person wanting or needing. 

Box 3 – Recycle 

Items that need to be recycled such as plastic, glass 

or paper. 

Box 4 – THE BIN! 

Be brutal, if you don’t need it or use it, it serves no 

purpose or its broken beyond repair, then get rid. 

Bring Mother Nature inside 

Not only do indoor plants enhance the overall 

appearance of a space, but they’ve been shown to 

boost moods, increase creativity, reduce stress, and 

eliminate air pollutants — making for a healthier, 

happier you. Obviously, real plants are best but if 

you’re nervous about keeping one alive then there 

are some great faux products on the market now. 

Simple updates with minimal spend 

Put away heavy faux fur throws and wool blankets 

and replace with lighter fabrics like cotton or linen. 

Swap out dark colours which were right for winter 

and bring in bold pastels or neons to create that 

fresh spring look. Crisp neutrals can make a room 

feel bigger and brighter. For example layering 

whites and pale pinks can be a lovely way to add 

a pop of colour while keeping your space neutral. 

Adding a lovely woven basket or two is the perfect 

accessory for a room to store bits while still looking 

chic and stylish, a great way to reduce clutter and 

change up your look. 

Making an entrance 

It’s also nice to freshen up the outside and small 

changes can make such a difference. Transform 

the entrance by changing the colour of your 

front door or simply replace the door matt with 

something stylish and smart. Frame the doorway 

with a planter either side to make a warm, 

welcoming and elegant statement for you and 

your guests.

CROSSINGS 

by Nottinghamshire Ramblers 

Representatives of local organisations are 

planning to lobby councillors and Highways 

England to gain support for an initiative to improve 

the safety of people crossing the busy A52 near 

West Bridgford. 

Local groups such as the Ramblers, Pedals 

and the British Horse Society are concerned at 

how dangerous it is for people to cross the dual 

carriageway, particularly between the Nottingham 

Knight and Wheatcroft Roundabouts. With the 

Government pushing for an Active Travel programme 

it is very important that safe crossings are provided 

across this very busy road. 

The bridleways that lead onto the road provide poor 

views of approaching cars and people have to cross 

diagonally or walk along a verge to reach the other 

access points. A nearby underpass is difficult to 

reach and not yet easily accessible. The promise 

from Highways England that there will be crossings at 

the two roundabouts will not solve the problem. 

Concerned for the safety of children walking or cycling 

to school, and local residents wanting to access the 

countryside from their homes, the groups want to see 

some simple solutions put into place, such as making 

the underpass much more accessible.

Top Dogs: Meet Notts Police K9 Unit 

A police dog’s sniffer senses and 

determination mean they can hunt 

down suspects when they might have 

otherwise escaped, and uncover illicit 

items when they’re hidden. It’s a wellknown 

saying that dogs are man’s best 

friend, but when it comes to policing, 

they are also invaluable work colleagues 

too. 

There are two types of dog which you 

can find in policing; search dogs, or 

‘sniffer dogs’, who sniff out suspicious 

items and general purpose dogs, who 

chase and detain suspects. All have 

been highly trained and have gone 

through various assessments and 

training courses to ensure they are 

suited to the role. 

Police dogs are cared for by their 

dedicated handlers. Handlers have to 

ensure they have sufficient space and 

a kennel for their dogs at their family 

homes and their canine colleagues 

travel to and from work with them each 

day, where among training and other 

exercise they are ready to be called to 

an incident at a moment’s notice. 

As well as being ready for urgent 

call-outs, the dogs are also involved in 

a number of pre-planned operations 

and patrols, and support various 

other departments in force with their 

important police work including finding 

missing people. 

Nottinghamshire Police’s Dog Section 

have also welcomed seven new 

handlers in the last year, bringing new 

dogs with them. We would like to 

introduce you to some of the brightest 

members of the pack: 

PD Quantum is one 

brave police dog, 

and has had an 

eventful career with 

the force, bouncing 

back from injury a 

number of times. 

Whilst successfully 

chasing two violent 

burglars in Top Valley during March 

2018, the now five-year-old Belgian 

Malinois and German Shepherd cross 

received stab injuries to his face. 

However, this hasn’t stopped him and 

he can most recently be found on the 

latest season of TV documentary Police 

Interceptors with his handler PC Jen 

Ellse, where among many successes he 

was able to pick up a scent after finding 

a ditched car in Broxtowe Estate and 

tracked down two suspects who were 

hiding in a nearby garden. 

PD Cooper joined 

Nottinghamshire 

Police after his 

family got in touch 

feeling that he 

needed more of 

a challenge, and 

that he was simply 

too energetic in 

his usual family home setting despite 

getting a couple of hours of exercise a 

day. He passed his course and joined 

the force officially in February 2020, 

where he also joined the family of PC 

Jen Ellse and PD Quantum. 

Cooper is a ‘sniffer’ dog and has been 

trained to search for a wide range of 

drugs, cash and firearms. He’s shown 

great success as a ‘sniffer’ dog, and 

during one particular job he helped 

uncover £3,000 in cash which was well 

hidden in between a radiator.

commonly owned pet in 

the UK. With more of us 

choosing to own a dog, 

sadly this has led to a rise 

in dog theft. Below are a 

number of preventative 

steps you can take to 

reduce the chances of your 

dog being stolen. 

Stay Alert: It’s important to be aware of any 

suspicious behaviour such as anyone approaching 

dog owners to ask them lots of questions about their 

dog. If you notice unusual markings in front of your 

house, report them. Keep up to date with online local 

community groups. Don’t hesitate to contact the 

police by calling 101 if you witness any suspicious 

behaviour. 

Preventative Measures: Even the most basic of 

security steps can help to reduce the risk of your 

pet being stolen. Avoid leaving your dog unattended 

outside in a public space or in your car. Secure your 

garden. Try not to leave your dog unsupervised in 

the garden. Installing security cameras can act as a 

deterrent. If dog thefts are common in your area, this 

may be something to consider. 

Protecting Your Dog From Dog Theft: Ensure 

that your dog is microchipped. All puppies must 

be microchipped by 8 weeks of age by law, and 

definitely before they leave their breeder. Make sure 

your dog is wearing a collar and has an accurate ID 

tag without your dog’s name on. Recall training is 

particularly important. 

What should I do if my dog goes missing? You 

should report this immediately. Here is a list of who 

you should inform as soon as possible; the Police via 

101; your neighbours; local community online pages; 

your local council; your vet and other local practices; 

local animal rescue centres; the database with which 

your dog’s microchip is registered. 



The Road to Recovery 

Well, here it is… normality is 

getting a few steps closer. 

We’ve either become the best version of ourselves in 

lockdown or waited to create the best version once 

we are back to ‘normal’ life again. 

Either way, it starts today. Reading this right now you 

get to make a choice in what you do with your health 

going forward. 

There are always three main focuses to consider 

toward improving health. 

1. Nutrition 

When it comes to nutrition, eating the stereotypical 

diet of chicken, rice and broccoli isn’t how long 

lasting results are achieved. You want an approach 

that you enjoy, with foods you know and love so it 

doesn’t feel restrictive. This is an area we spend a lot 

of time on with our members. Dieting doesn’t need 

to be painful. 

2. Exercise 

To produce any result, we need to know our intake 

and expenditure numbers. We can’t just move more 

and expect a result if we don’t know what we are 

putting into our bodies and the numeric values 

of this. We have to work out the calorie deficit 

otherwise that’s a whole lot of moving for very little 

reward. 

Don’t neglect resistance training (building lean 

muscle) over cardio for fat loss. The more lean mass 

we have, the faster and easier it is to maintain a 

healthy weight. It will also, in time, allow you to eat 

more food, as you’ll need more fuel to exercise. WIN, 

WIN! 

3. Mindset 

This area is EVERYTHING and, in my opinion, the 

most important area of focus. If you aren’t ready, 

aren’t honest with yourself and find it easy to place 

blame elsewhere, your mindset will be challenged 

and you’ll think that the result isn’t possible. 

The change you are about to undergo will feel 

difficult at times, you’ll feel like giving up and you’ll 

question if it’s possible. 

These three areas are the staples of any 

transformation we undertake. They also blend into so 

many other areas of our lives and are based around 

the belief you have in yourself to make the change 

possible. One bad day doesn’t mean it’s a bad week. 

So don’t let the outcome defeat you before you’ve 

begun to see the result you deserve. 

2021 may have started off a little rocky, but it doesn’t

where shall we go? walks in and around nottingham 

by Nottinghamshire Footpaths Preservation Society (nottsfps.org.uk) 

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought with it a 

renewed interest in outdoor activities, particularly 

walking. The absence of alternatives has seen 

our pavements and path networks a lot busier and 

people eager to seek new routes. 

Ordnance Survey maps, in particular to 1:25,000 

scale Explorer series are very useful but can be 

somewhat bewildering. Fortunately there are 

various guides available to help find suitable walks 

in and around Nottingham. These, combined with 

either paper or electronic copy of Explorer sheet 

260 for Nottingham, are a great resource. Here are 

three that you might find useful: with details easily 

accessible on the internet by following the links: 

The Notts Wolds 

Way - nottsfps.org.

was devised by the 

Notts Footpaths 

Preservation Society 

and covers 26 miles 

south and east 

of Nottingham, 

described in four 

sections. The route across the Nottinghamshire 

Wolds takes in many villages. Starting at Bunny in 

the west it visits the three Ws, Wysall, Willoughby 

and Widmerpool before continuing north to 

Keyworth, Plumtree and Clipston. From there it 

goes south to Stanton before turning back north 

to Cropwell Bishop and the end of the route at 

Cropwell Butler. The area has a rich history, a lot of 

it described in the brochure. As NWW is linear you 

can either simply turn back and re-walk it back to the 

start, or work out a different way on the many paths 

and lanes back to your starting point. 

100 Walks From The Poppy & Pint - 

castlerockbrewery.co.uk/event/100walksfromt 

hepoppyandpint/ has been put together by Trevor 

Riddiough and will be of interest to those in West 

Bridgford, particularly those living in the Lady Bay 

area. This work, now in three volumes, is the fruit 

of Trevor’s labours during lockdown. The Poppy 

and Pint’s location in Lady Bay is great for access 

to the River Trent, Holme Pierrepont Country Park, 

the Grantham Canal and a host of other places for 

walking. The pub’s owners, Castle Rock Brewery 

host the walks on their website, set out in three 

volumes. All the walks are circular, so there is no 

problem getting back to your starting point! 

The Nottingham

is a 60-mile route, 

circumnavigating the 

city of Nottingham, and divided into 12 sections. 

It celebrates the villages and countryside around 

Nottingham, and explores its rich tapestry of local 

history – from the rolling hills and industrial towns 

of the north-west to the alluvial plains of the Trent 

and Soar with its small villages in the south-east. 

The route is 60 miles in total, so each mile walked 

represents a minute on the clock face (hence you 

can claim it as ‘a mile-a-minute walk’!) Each section 

has good links by bus or tram to get you to the start 

and from the finish.

that date. As has been the case since June 2020 we 

will be offering a limited service, opening times have 

been reduced and there will be limits on the number 

of people in our buildings. However, please keep an

TORKARD ENSEMBLE (HUCKNALL) - a friendly community 

choir and open orchestra, currently meeting via Zoom but 

hopefully back to “in person” in Hucknall soon. We work on 

all sorts of music and aim to make music-making available 

to anyone. No audition is required - our choir is open to 

anyone, whether or not they have any musical training or 

experience. We suggest Grade 5 standard for the orchestra 

due to the type of music that we play.
