MAYOR’S FOREWORD
Milí přátelé,

Academia Film Olomouc je mezinárodně renomovaným festivalem,
který je pro Olomoucký kraj jednou z profilových akcí v oblasti kultury.
Ač máme v pandemické době tendenci zapomínat na pocity
z účasti na kulturních akcích, je přínos festivalu v oblasti popularizace
vědy nezpochybnitelný. Organizátoři již v loňském roce
dokázali flexibilně reagovat na ztížené podmínky a připravili festival
v online podobě. Plán pro rok 2021 je ještě ambicióznější. Mimořádným
počinem je zejména rozjezd platformy videtavedet.cz, díky
které se alespoň část festivalové produkce dostane k daleko širšímu
spektru obyvatel bez ohledu na to, zda kina budou přístupná
veřejnosti, či nikoliv. Z hlediska kraje je sympatická snaha rozšíření
promítání také do dalších měst v rámci našeho regionu, které jsou
důležité nejen pro budování značky a publika festivalu, ale také ve
smyslu šíření špičkové kultury mimo Olomouc. Současná věda je
nucena rychle reagovat na nové společenské a zdravotní výzvy, těší
mne, že festival AFO za ní nepokulhává, ale naopak ukazuje cestu
i dalším organizátorům kulturních akcí.
Academia Film Olomouc is an internationally renowned festival and
one of the leading cultural events in the Olomouc Region. While we
tend to forget how it feels to participate in such events in these times
of a pandemic, the festival’s contribution to the popularisation of
science is unquestionable. Last year, the organisers were able to
flexibly adapt to the adverse conditions and hold the festival in an
online format. The plans for 2021 are even more ambitious. The
launch of the videtavedet.cz platform is an extraordinary achievement
thanks to which at least a part of the programme will reach
a much wider audience, regardless of whether cinemas are open
to the public. From the regional standpoint, the effort to extend the
screenings to other cities of our region is admirable and essential
both for building and expanding the festival’s brand and audience
and spreading scientific content throughout the region. Current
science is forced to quickly respond to new social and medical
challenges. I am pleased that the AFO festival does not fall behind
but instead shows the way for other organisers of cultural events.

už podruhé se „nejlepší vědecký festival Mléčné dráhy“ musí vypořádat
se specifickou těžkostí naší doby, tedy se společností bez
velkých osobních kontaktů. S potěšením mohu konstatovat, že
pořadatelé Academia Filmu Olomouc zvládli svou roli v loňském
roce a svou roli tak jistě zvládnou i letos. Na šestapadesátý ročník
festivalu se proto těším a nebojím se, že by nevyšel.
AFO opět přinese soutěžní filmy, přednášky či rozhovory. To vše lze
uskutečnit i online formou a z loňska víme, že to funguje. Opět nám
bohužel bude scházet setkávání, výměny názorů a zkušeností „face
to face“ a celý ten specifický ruch a shon a další prvky festivalové
atmosféry. Přesto je ale moc důležité, že se další ročník odehraje.
AFO přece není obyčejný festival, jakých jsou na světě desítky.
AFO je cenným nástrojem popularizace vědy a jako takový má
své poslání, které musí plnit v časech dobrých i zlých. Věřím, že
zkušenosti z těchto náročných ročníků jeho organizátory posílí.
A dodávám, že díky přestěhování do online prostoru nakonec AFO
osloví více lidí, než kolik by dokázal zvládnout sebevětší promítací
či přednáškový sál.

Dear friends,
For the second time, the “best science festival in all the Milky
Way” has to deal with the time of hardship, when we need to get
by without wider social interactions. I am pleased to say that the
organisers of Academia Film Olomouc did a great job last year,
and I believe they will do so again. Therefore, I look forward to the
56th AFO festival, and I am not at all worried about it working out
this time.
Once again, AFO will introduce new films, lectures, and interviews.
All of these can be presented online, as we know from last year’s experience.
Unfortunately, we will again miss the face ­to ­face interaction
and exchange of opinions, as well as the hustle and bustle
of the festival and its atmosphere. Nevertheless, the crucial issue
is that the festival takes place as planned.
AFO is not just any ordinary festival, which is a dime a dozen. AFO
is a valuable tool for the popularisation of science and, as such,
has a duty to fulfil in times both good and bad. I believe that the
experience of these challenging years will only make the organisers
stronger. Moreover, by moving online, AFO manages to expand its
audience reach beyond the limits of the largest movie theatre and
lecture hall.
