Plenty of trick gear in Subaru’s<br />
A READER emailed me the other<br />
day. He had read my recent article<br />
on the Subaru Forester hybrid.<br />
I had made mention of the<br />
horizontally-opposed (boxer)<br />
engine that powers most Subaru<br />
models, and how I related to the<br />
design harking back to the 60s<br />
when I first became interested in<br />
motor vehicles.<br />
Because I mentioned Jowett,<br />
Porsche and Volkswagen the<br />
reader suggested I had forgotten<br />
other important manufacturers<br />
that built flat-four engines – Alfa<br />
Romeo and Lancia.<br />
Sure, both those manufacturers<br />
did produce flat-four engines,<br />
Lancia certainly during the 60s,<br />
but they weren’t commercially<br />
available in New Zealand, and<br />
Alfa Romeo’s flat-four came in<br />
1971. I can reassure my correspondent<br />
that I have fond memories<br />
of the Alfa 33 that I evaluated<br />
in 1989, its boxer engine was<br />
indicative of the sporty image<br />
that Alfa generated at that time.<br />
This evaluation surrounds the<br />
Forester, a non-hybrid model<br />
new to Subaru’s books, of course,<br />
powered by a boxer engine; it’s<br />
a Sport variant also wearing an<br />
X badge, a model that carries a<br />
lot more cosmetic bling than the<br />
model it is based on. The Forester<br />
X Sport sits at $47,490, which is<br />
bang in the middle of the range.<br />
The series starts at $42,490 and<br />
ends at $49,490 for the top-spec<br />
Limited. Incidentally, the hybrid<br />
model also lists at $47,490.<br />
It would take some convincing<br />
to get me into the X Sport, simply<br />
because I find the entry-level<br />
model more appealing, but for<br />
those who want something just<br />
that little bit out of the ordinary<br />
in terms of looks, there’s no doubt<br />
the X Sport has that appeal.<br />
Bright orange cosmetic detailing<br />
is used both inside and out,<br />
there are orange accents on the<br />
front, side and rear underguard<br />
and roof rails, also on the dash<br />
panel and centre console. The<br />
seats are orange-stitched and,<br />
in a nice touch, the cloth trim is<br />
heated and is water-guarded.<br />
To top it all off, the X Sport<br />
SUBARU FORESTER X SPORT: High level of fitment for popular four-wheel-drive SUV.<br />
model gets 18in black wheels,<br />
the whole package is designed to<br />
capture attention and it certainly<br />
does that, it received favourable<br />
comment during the time it was<br />
in my care.<br />
Elsewhere the X Sport model<br />
gets plenty of other specification.<br />
Major items include satellite<br />
navigation, electric front seat<br />
adjustment, keyless entry and<br />
ignition, electric sunroof and<br />
tailgate, and SI drive – Subaru’s<br />
take on engine management<br />
protocols – which can be<br />
adjusted by the driver to suit<br />
driving styles and the type of<br />
journey ahead.<br />
