A Biker’s Tale
by John Hellemans
An hilarious tale about an epic event, written from a unique perspective. To be able to
appreciate the story, the reader needs to be young at heart, have a vivid imagination and
a love for adventure. If that sounds like you, join the writer on his journey, and experience
his daily ups and downs with him. The Tour Aotearoa is a mountain bike ‘brevet’ (a timed,
long-distance cycling event) covering the length of New Zealand. It starts at the most northern
point of the North Island, Cape Reinga, and finishes at Stirling Point, just south of Bluff at
the bottom of the South Island. The Tour is held biennially and requires participants to follow
a set route covering 3,000 km which consists of existing mountain bike trails scattered
throughout the country and connected by back country roads. The Tour is unsupported, so
participants carry their own gear. To be awarded the brevet, the riders need to cover the full
distance within 30 days. The writer took part in the 2018 edition of the Tour. His experience
was different from what he expected. He encountered all types of challenges, from getting
lost to physical ailments, serious weather events and loneliness. In between he had plenty
of time to contemplate and let his thoughts and imagination run free.
Tales & recipes from a New Zealand Sheep Station
by Philippa Cameron
Life on Otematata Station, a 40,000 hectare high country station in Otago, is busy and
varied. Philippa Cameron and her husband, Joe, who is the fifth generation to work the
role as station cook, this is the story of mustering in autumn, lambing in spring, the
freezing days of winter and the scorching heat of summer. Along with looking after her
two small girls, her garden and various animals, Philippa feeds the teams of workers.
She collects and shares a selection of delicious, hearty recipes with other farm cooks
on her popular Instagram page @whats_for_smoko. This book also features Philippa’s
most trusted recipes, tested on many approving musterers.
and love. She uncovered new relatives, deeply sad adoptions, harsh parenting, complex
marriages and a few rogues. These stories often highlighted how tough life was for women
and children in an era when women had to fight for every bit of independence they gained.
This compelling, moving book is about mothers and daughters, ageing and the way deep
family traumas echo down through the generations. It is also spliced with wisdom on caring
for someone with dementia.
The Light of Days
Women Fighters of the Jewish resistance
by Judy Batalion
A fascinating history about a little-known group who took on the Nazis . . . The individual
tales of these courageous young women are remarkable’ Independent One of the most
important untold stories of World War II, The Light of Days is a soaring landmark history
that brings to light the extraordinary accomplishments of brave Jewish women who inspired
Poland’s Jewish youth groups to resist the Nazis. Witnesses to the brutal murder of their
families and the violent destruction of their communities, a cadre of Jewish women in
Poland - some still in their teens - became the heart of a wide-ranging resistance network
that fought the Nazis. With courage, guile and nerves of steel, these ‘ghetto girls’ smuggled
guns in loaves of bread and coded intelligence messages in their plaited hair. They helped
build life-saving systems of underground bunkers and sustained thousands of Jews in safe
hiding places. They bribed Gestapo guards with liquor, assassinated Nazis and sabotaged
German supply lines. The Light of Days at last reveals the real history of these incredible
women whose courageous yet little-known feats have been eclipsed by time.
