The Voice of a New Generation

Dear Friends,
As I near the milestone of serving as LPU president for
24 months, I reflect on the incredible challenges and
opportunities we’ve all encountered over the past year.
Despite the disruptions, LPU has remained “open for
business” declaring this a time for each of us to rise with
courage and shine in the world. Faculty and staff have
learned that we are able to be strategically responsive
through adaptation, innovation, and prayer. Significant
initiatives, programs, and partnerships have been
birthed during this season! Even more, though, is what
we have gained. This extraordinary year has brought
us closer to Christ and a renewed commitment to our
mission, vision, and values as a Biblical University.
While it may seem as if the world is a dark place right
now, LPU is holding onto its mandate to be a beacon of
light, hope, and truth. I love what Aimee Selby, 2020-
2021 Professor of the Year writes, “…We are a Lighthouse. We, the staff, faculty, students, and alumni of LPU
are the thousands of individual flames that make up the Lighthouse of International Foursquare Evangelism
(L.I.F.E.), collectively reflecting the Light of the World in all His brilliance amid this storm. LPU is not merely a
collection of buildings – LPU is you and me. We are LIFE. We are Lighthouse people. And we were made for the
storm.” I hope you take a moment to enjoy the rest of Aimee’s devotional in this issue of Carry On.
People of the light. That is who we are. In his letter to the church in Ephesus the Apostle Paul writes, “For once
you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For the fruit of
light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.” (Ephesians 5:8-9 NLT). I’m convinced as we educate
biblically grounded men and women, we will see impact for the kingdom of God in the generations to come.
LPU and LPU-VA both offer on-ground and online regionally accredited education with flexible options. As
our dedicated teams serve, equip, and graduate Spirit-empowered world changers, LPU is able to further
strengthen our reach around the world. God is so good.
Our mission is clear. Life Pacific University is an institution of biblical higher education existing for the
transformational development of students into leaders prepared to serve God in the Church, the workplace,
and the world. I value and appreciate your commitment to cultivate and champion the University’s mission. It is
because of God’s faithfulness and the guidance of His Word, we step boldly into the future.
I am optimistic for what lies ahead of us. Powerful things are happening on our campuses, in the lives of our
students, and all around the world. LPU’s light is shining bright. As you read through the articles, stories, and
updates in this issue of Carry On, I hope you are also encouraged and inspired to bring light to your corner of
the world.
Rising with Courage:
LPU Responds to COVID
The Student Success Initiative assists LPU students with remote learning, offers Core Life Skills, and
provides Career Services helping develop LPU students into transformational leaders.
Rising With Courage
During an unprecedented year, we have witnessed
LPU students not just survive, but thrive. In fact, more
students achieved academic honors by making the
Dean’s list for Fall 2020 than the previous two fall
semesters. Amidst all the change and challenges, Life
Pacific executive leadership, faculty, and staff came
together and with an innovative and flexible mindset,
an indomitable spirit, and while following the leading
of the Holy Spirit, implemented safety protocols and
introduced new resources and services all geared to
help students succeed. With real-time responsiveness
at the forefront, LPU led the way while navigating
the challenging circumstances created by COVID-19.
Following are just a few of the cutting-edge adaptations
and amazing outcomes from this unprecedented year.
COVID Task Force
LPU developed a COVID-19 Task Force comprised of faculty, staff, and
executive leadership to streamline information and communication,
and make sure that all COVID-19 related mandates and regulations were
followed and implemented, helping to keep the LPU community safe.
Safety Protocols
In accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines, LPU implemented
numerous safety measures including appropriate social distancing and
masking protocols, temperature-check kiosks, a mandated check-in process
via the University mobile app, and hand sanitation stations. Quick adaptation
to an online learning model and adjusted on-campus living situations, LPU
served students through all phases of the pandemic while ensuring the
highest levels of health and safety standards.
Student Resources and Supports
Identifying the specific mental, emotional, and spiritual impact of the
pandemic on students and their overall well-being, LPU focused fundraising
efforts and collaborated with internal and external partners on the Student
Success Initiative. Expanding resources and services, the initiative included
Emmaus Road Counseling and Success Coaches. Effective utilization of
emerging technology allowed LPU to expand and improve connectivity for
students to classroom learning and campus programs.
3
Emmaus Road Counseling is offered free of charge to help LPU
students navigate the difficult mental and emotional aspects of
pursuing a college education.
In The Spotlight:
Maggie Mejia is Shining Her Light
Recently accepted into Duke Divinity School with a 100% tuition scholarship,
Maggie Mejia ’21 participated in the prestigious DivEx Program at Harvard
Divinity School (HDS) earlier this year. Representing LPU, Maggie took part in
a cohort of 15 undergraduate students from prominent universities including
Georgetown, Howard, and Brown.
Maggie, can you tell us about your overall experience?
“I was so grateful to be part of this program with students from all over the
U.S.! Diversity covers so many topics beyond cultural and racial diversity. It
also is about affiliation, socio-economic status, gender identity, and disability.
What my peers shared is sacred. We got to practice contemplative prayer to
reflect on our experiences, bond with the other students, and learn from their
experiences.”
As a Christian, how did you fit in a group where all religions are given
equal consideration?
“I did not feel any tension with my peers—we were all very respectful of each
other! It was a growing and rewarding experience. It was very humbling to
have other people listen to my Pentecostal experiences without invalidating me. I learned more than I ever imagined!
What was the best part of being involved in the DivEx Program?
“I felt seen and valued. It was incredibly rewarding to see other minorities and diverse people who look like me seek to
further their education at a graduate level; we are breaking educational barriers. I have so many dreams and career goals!”
“Never in a million years did I imagine that I would be admitted into a rigorous and spiritually
growing program that would build upon the biblical foundations I gained at LPU.”
As she heads off to Duke, Maggie’s dreams are giant-sized. She says, “Never in a million years did I imagine that I would
be admitted into a rigorous and spiritually growing program that would build upon the biblical foundation I gained at
LPU.” Besides desiring to be a church planter and work with children from low-income communities, she also hopes
to be a Diversity Officer at a Christian university to encourage and support students to give back to their communities.
There is no doubt that with dual degrees in Communications and Biblical Studies, Maggie is equipped and ready to step
into her calling as a transformational leader who shines the light of Christ wherever she goes.
Pam Keselburg:
A Life on Mission
As a nine-year-old in Sunday School at the Foursquare
Church in Olympia, Washington, Pam Keselburg ‘67
received her calling. And even though Pam prepared
to serve God as a student at LIFE Bible College (LBC),
the journey toward fulfilling her mission took many
turns. Fifty years later, God began to tug on her heart.
It started one day when she noticed a local mobile
home park filled with residents struggling in poverty.
Working with underprivileged families was the mission
given to her as a child. Already in her 60’s, Pam thought
“I didn’t realize that it would take this long, but this is the
fulfilment.”
The mission began small with a team of only herself
and her cousin Joy. Bake sales raised money for
Christmas gifts and food for the residents. Over the
years, the team has grown as they have reached
beyond the local community. With donations from her
church, friends and church members volunteered to
distribute food in the summer and during the holidays.
Amazed, Pam watched as the mission given to her as
a child was being fulfilled beyond her imagination. But
God was not finished opening doors.
When COVID-19 hit in 2020, bake sales were
curtailed; however, Pam’s reputation for compassion
and dependability was so well established that
organizations began contacting her to help with the
surge in demand for services. With the assistance of
her favorite local hang-out, Farrelli’s Pizza Restaurant,
the team grew even larger and in partnership with a
local food bank, the team served 30,000 meals in just
three months (March through May).
While not at the same near-record pace, food
distribution continued throughout the summer and fall
including more than 500 meals for Thanksgiving. The
team was able to make Christmas especially sweet for
six homeless families with the help of a local motel,
restaurant, and the committed team from Farrelli’s.
On Christmas Eve, each family had their own room for
the night with pizza and snacks, bubble baths, and hot
chocolate accompanied by a Christmas tree and gifts
for each family member.
“Don’t limit yourself; go beyond your
boundaries. Open your heart, follow God’s
leading. You don’t need a big church.
You can make a big difference in your
community with the power of a few.”
Pam equates this mission work to Aimee Semple
McPherson’s illustrative sermons and ministry lessons
she studied at LBC. Reflecting on her time as a student,
Pam says it was in her Pedagogy: The Art of Teaching
class that she learned about the strength of teaching
in action. Now, the teams serving with Pam are also
actively learning about compassion and generosity for
the underprivileged. Much like the mission that Sister
Aimee began during the Great Depression of serving
food to those in need, Pam and her teams are reaching
and inspiring a new generation of LPU students.
A recent gift by the Keselburg family investing in the
men’s and women’s soccer teams has carried forward
the legacy of this mission. Partnering with Second
Harvest Food Bank, RSMcares, and Shepherd of the
Hills Church in Los Angeles, the soccer teams served
nearly 15,000 pounds of food to more than 600
families last Christmas.
Pam continues the mission to this day and says to
anyone looking to change the world, “Don’t limit
yourself; go beyond your boundaries. Open your heart,
follow God’s leading. You don’t need a big church. You
can make a big difference in your community with the
power of a few.”
People of the Light:
A Devotional by Aimee Selby
These are dark and stormy days. We
all feel it. A global pandemic. Racial
inequality, injustice, and violence.
Ugly political divisions. Soaring rates
of depression, drug use, and suicide.
The ethics and morals of our society
sliding ever closer to a cliff. The youth
of our nation being taught to question
their sexual identities before they have
even reached puberty. The relentless
destruction of lives, dreams, and
jobs. These are hurricane winds and
crashing waves, fears and anxieties
that howl through the mind, pain that
relentlessly batters the heart. To the
storm-weary souls who are caught in
the riptides of grief and pain, it must
surely feel like there is no safe harbor
to be found.
Yes, these are dark and stormy days.
But friends, that is why we exist.
We are a Lighthouse. We, the staff,
faculty, students, and alumni of LPU
are the thousands of individual flames
that make up the Lighthouse of
International Foursquare Evangelism,
collectively reflecting the Light of the
World in all His brilliance amid this
storm. LPU is not merely a collection
of buildings – LPU is you and me. We
are LIFE. We are Lighthouse people.
And we were made for the storm.
The presence of a lighthouse assumes
two things: darkness and danger.
Show me the lighthouse that stands
as guardian over a docile beach. It
doesn’t exist! Lighthouses stand on
cliffs where storms rage, and waves
beat against jagged rocks. They stand
where there is real danger, where real
lives hang in the balance. They stand,
often alone, shining their light into the
darkness, beckoning lost and weary
people to the safety of the harbor.
Lighthouses are made for storms, and
darkness, and danger.
Being Lightkeepers in days like these
requires great courage. Let us learn
a lesson from Peter the disciple: the
strength of our courage is in direct
relation to the focus of our eyes. If
we focus on the wind and waves, the
terror that swells in our hearts will
threaten to swamp us. However, if
we fix our eyes on Jesus - the Wave-
Walker, the Light Himself, the very
one who established our Lighthouse
nearly a hundred years ago and has
been faithful to sustain it through
every storm since – if we fix our eyes
on Him, we will find ourselves filled to
overflowing with the kind of courage
and peace that is unshakable.
Friends, we are Lighthouse people.
God has placed you exactly where He
needs you to be in order to carry out His
mission during these dark and stormy
days. He will not leave or forsake you.
He will be faithful to sustain you, and
to equip you with everything you need
to reflect His Light in the darkness of
this storm. Trust in Him. Fix your eyes
on Him. Wait on Him. As we do so,
He will continue to uphold us. We
are His Lighthouses, spread out on a
thousand hilltops across our country
and throughout the world, shining for
the glory of His Kingdom and guiding
people to the safe harbor of His love.
In 2019-2020, Life Pacific University
received significant estate gifts from
generous friends and alumni.
Major Legacy Gift
For years Harry Rogers prayed about
a major legacy gift that could make a
long-term difference in the lives of LPU
students. His mother graduated from
LIFE Bible College in the 1930s, and
he always cherished the memory of
his mother’s stories about the exciting
years of revival and ministry in her
college days. Later in life Harry served
as the youth director of Van Nuys
Foursquare Church (now known as
The Church on the Way). A contractor,
Harry also built several Foursquare
church facilities in California.
Visiting the San Dimas campus shortly
before the pandemic, Harry had the
privilege to tour the beloved university
he had never experienced in person
but cherishes so deeply. As a result,
Harry gave LPU an irrevocable life
estate of cash and investments valued
at 7-figures. He also created a gift
annuity that will provide a monthly
life-long income for himself with LPU
as the charitable beneficiary.
Testamentary Estate Gifts
Two additional donors named LPU as
a beneficiary of testamentary estate
gifts. Selma Guzman ’71 earmarked a
bequest in her will as a gift to Athletics.
Theresa Jolley and her husband
Mark created a revocable living trust
and designated a 6-figure cash gift
to support the Homer and Eilene
Hummel Endowed Scholarship in
memory of her parents. Eilene taught
voice lessons as LIFE Bible College
faculty, and both Eilene and Homer
were inspiring musicians and served
as Ministers of Music at Angelus
Temple for 19 years.
Contingency Legacy Gift
Last fall, President Emeritus Jim J.
Adams ‘77 and Lori Adams included
a contingency legacy in their estate.
Should Jim and Lori be pre-deceased
by, or co-deceased with, their children,
their estate will be distributed to
various beneficiaries including LPU.
While a contingency legacy is only
distributed if a catastrophic event
were to occur, this option is another
way to ensure that their bequests are
aligned with their desire to support the
mission of Life Pacific University.
Media
Campaign:
The Voice of a New Generation
“What is my task? To get the gospel around the world in
the shortest possible time to every man and woman and
boy and girl!”
- Aimee Semple McPherson
In 1923, Aimee knew that if the Gospel
was going to go into all the world, it
would be on the radio and through
film. She embraced the technology of
her day and established this legacy of
innovation that continues at LPU today.
Building on the compelling work
already being done at LPU in
video production, media relations,
webinars, podcasts, livestream, and
online courses, the Aimee Semple
McPherson Digital Media Studios will
link four locations across campus in a
digital network of cutting-edge, fully
equipped media studios.
“We are committed to supporting our
students as they find new and creative
ways to share the gospel with the
world,” says President Angie Richey.
“The Aimee Semple McPherson
Digital Media Studios is our biggest
project for 2021, with a goal to
complete the campus-wide studio
system for our Centennial in 2023. We
are proud to walk in Aimee’s footsteps
with a new generation of men and women who will share stories of salvation
and hope through new and transformative media.”
With the help of generous donors and partnering with leaders in the
industry, this $1.5 million project will bridge students’ classroom education
with real world projects. Students will receive hands on experience with
the latest production technology and have opportunities for mentorships
with influencers and industry leaders. Whether producing content for
masterclass-style online courses or developing media resources for the
local church, the Digital Media Studios will further allow LPU students, staff,
and faculty to produce and share content around the world.
Andrew Hawksworth ‘09, LPU Professor and Marketing Videographer, states,
“With over $750 billion spent annually on media content, digital media is
truly the language of the future. By investing in emerging technologies and
intentionally empowering the leaders of tomorrow, LPU is writing a new
chapter in its legacy, paving innovative pathways for education on campus
and setting the stage for unprecedented global impact grounded in the
timeless Word of God.”
Lynnette Lozoya M.A. ‘13, Executive Director of Development, says, “We have
already secured more than $620,000 in capital and scholarships toward this
exciting project. LPU is looking for creative partners to come alongside us as
we envision this innovative media environment. We invite studio executives,
pastors, entrepreneurs, and leaders in this emerging field to join us as
partners and help lead LPU and a new generation of students forward in
this vision.”
process by using a new online portal this year. Taking into
consideration the applicant’s financial need, GPA scores, and
ensuring that all eligibility criteria was met, LPU awarded
nearly $100,000 in scholarships to 106 students for the 2020-
2021 academic year. Awardees include students from both the
San Dimas and Virginia campuses, Online Degree Completion
program students, and Master of Arts students.
These awards come from more than 75 endowed and nonendowed
scholarship accounts established from the gifts of
churches, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the University.
Since July 2020, nine new scholarships (endowed and nonendowed)
have been created totaling $612,000. These
noteworthy scholarships include:
• The Alabaster House Women’s Scholarship Endowment.
Management of this existing endowment was transferred
from The Foursquare Church to LPU, helping streamline
the applicant and awarding process.
• In support of the Aimee Semple McPherson Digital
Media Studio project, two new scholarships were
created by two families of donors to provide financial aid
for students pursuing training in digital media.
• New non-endowed scholarships were created, including
the Active Military/Veteran Family Scholarship, Online
Undergraduate Scholarship, and the Student Success
Scholarship for traditionally underrepresented students
at LPU – ethnic minorities, low income, first generation,
and female students.
Of the recently awarded scholarships, 83% of the
students represent an ethnic minority and 72%
are women. It is only because of the generous
support of donors that so many LPU students
are able to not just survive but thrive on their
transformational journey toward earning a
degree and fulfilling God’s calling.
LPU-VA: A Lighthouse in the East
Located in Christiansburg, Virginia, LPU-VA is the university’s East Coast
campus and is now fully integrated as a part of the greater LPU community.
LPU-VA offers students an innovative 2+2 Pathway to graduate with a
bachelor’s degree and hands-on ministry experience. This program is
designed in partnership with The Foursquare Church, so that graduates
are well-rounded and equipped to lead effectively. Life Pacific University
President Angie Richey shares, “With its own distinct programming,
LPU-VA delivers quality instruction and leadership development and
provides students a relevant, cutting-edge educational experience while
remaining true to our Foursquare heritage and University mission.”
During their time at LPU-VA, students spend their first two years of
classes on campus in a traditional university setting. Students gain a
strong academic and spiritual foundation by attending classes, engaged
in discipleship, involved in community outreach, and learning from local
leaders. Prepared to launch into the second phase of the program, the
students spend the next two years in residency at a local church or
ministry. Students complete the remainder of their classes online, earning
their bachelor’s degree. Residency placement occurs within a growing
network of local churches and ministries within The Foursquare Church.
Warrior Athletics
Like many communities across the world, Life Pacific
Athletics has seen and experienced the struggles of
COVID-19. However, LPU Athletics continues to adapt,
grow, and thrive through unprecedented circumstances.
Thankfully, six of our sports programs had successful
seasons with limited interruption due to COVID, and our
programs made strides in the GSAC and at the national
level.
• Two of our Women’s Wrestlers went to the National
Championships
• Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs finished their
respective seasons at the top of the GSAC
• Women’s Volleyball finished the year with their best
finish in the GSAC in program history.
• Six Warrior Athletes earned GSAC scholar athlete
honors
Introducing Cameron Riley,
Director of LPU Soccer and Head Coach
Coming to LPU from San Diego Christian College, Coach
Cameron Riley brings over 10 years coaching experience.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine and
has a wealth of experience developing Christ-centered
athletes on and off the field. Cameron and his wife Cathryn
are excited to be a part of the LPU community.
Alyssa Salgado and Adam Saavedra both received the Cliff Hamlow Champions of Character Award.
Breaking New Ground for Beach Volleyball
As a competitive collegiate sport, beach volleyball has grown
exponentially over the past decade. Currently, there are 90
NCAA schools with beach volleyball teams and the NAIA
historically follows the NCAA in sporting trends. With eight
GSAC teams in existence, LPU excitedly looks to enter the
playing field during the 21-22 season. This spring, renovation
began with the creation of a new sand court and an upgrade to
the existing sand volleyball court. LPU anticipates expanded
recruiting and student athlete development opportunities
with the addition of this up and coming college sport.
LPU Athletics’ mission has been and will always be to serve as an
outlet to advance Life Pacific University through intercollegiate
competition that promotes integrity, discipline, and Christ-like
character development.
