On Sunday 3rd of April 2011 at 8:05am, 52 boys in red lined up at the King’s College
triangle awaiting the start of their 10 kilometre trek to the top of the hill in the far, far, far
distance. With the 5th years eager to make history and the 2nd years backed by Mr
Carrington ready to break the 5th years winning streak, the day was sure to be a
goody.
With the usual sprint to the school gates taking place the race to the hill was started.
Once again the Mangere Road lights proved costly, as Thomas Murray “Jay walked”
against orders and was the only runner to make it across the lights and continue his
run whilst the other 51 boys were forced to wait for the green man to flash himself,
other then a few naughty 5th years who had the perseverance, determination and
sidestepping skills to not stop until their journey was complete.
10km later Thomas Murray (Y13) made his way up the side of One Tree Hill to finish
his race in first place with a time of 43 minutes flat. Not too much later Rafy Shasha
(Y12) finished his well run race in a time of 50min 12 secs, closely followed by dormmate
Tom Loseby with a time of 50min and 37secs.
With much surprise to the spectators and teachers, Sam Tietjen (Y13), James Witters
(Y9) and Elliot Graham (Y13) were clambering over the last stile to get to the brick
wall with times of 54-Sam, 54.06-James and 54.31-Elliot which were great efforts.
With only 6 minutes left to get times under an hour to receive House colours, William
Cook (Y10), Simon Crotty (Y10), Harry Gower (Y13), Kai Peter (Y11), Connor Tottle
(Y11) and Matt Gibbs (Y12) managed to scramble up the mountainside just under
time with only minutes and seconds to spare.
With 4 year 13’s, 3 year 12’s and 2 year 9’s and 10’s making it in under an hour the
dorm competition was looking tight with the year 13’s nudging ahead. Over the next 37
minutes, 40 more boys walked, ran, tackled and hobbled up the mountain side to finish
their 10km trek and receive their Chocó bar, juice box and well earned rest.
