Red Baron Term 1 2011
Head of House Report by Sam Gibbs
After a long, hot enjoyable summer school
suddenly started and we flooded back into
the House for the 89 th year of School House
and the 115 th year of King’s College. From
then on we have had a great term and there
are many highlights. We have been fortunate
to gain some reasonable results already and
with no Merit Shield our efforts have not
faded. Further our fellow School House boys
at Christ’s College soon found out that we are
better to the extent one has decided to stay.
Way back in February as a House we went to
Shakespeare Bay on the Whangaparaoa
Peninsula. We had the annual inter-tutor
group beach/swim relay and also the dorm
beach flag race. Many great times were
shared here and I can quite vividly remember
putting the boys to sleep that night and seeing
80% of them slapping on the aloe vera! If
that is not a good indication of a fantastic day
at the beach I’m not sure what is.
One Tree Hill Run.
The House has competed and done well in House events so far. Term three is notorious
for the majority of House Sport and where House Sport reaches it peak but
nothing so far is to be frowned upon. Swimming was a write off picking up dead
last, however in my five years of being at the College the best we have achieved
is 6 th – even with the school champion way back in 2007.
At the end of athletics week we picked up a credible 6 th place. Athletics afternoon
is a great event in the calendar and is a fantastic show of School and House spirit
and although I was absent playing cricket across the field, the defining red of
School House was prominent in and around the track – that may be being biased
but it’s true! I was pleased with the House in the way we performed and kudos
must go to Marzellus Salaiviao for his exceptional performance in being the
King’s College Junior Champion. Watch out for him in the future.
On Sunday the 3 rd of April the house had its annual One Tree Hill run – a treasured
tradition since the early 1970s. Gone are the days of leaving the gate and
‘winging it’ to the top of that agonizing hill. Now it is a set route that sorts the real
men from the boys. I’m please to report that the fifth year dorm has retained its title
as the winning dorm for three years in a row – the first dorm to ever do so,
winning by over six minutes. Also congratulations to Thomas Murray for another
top win.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
Head of House Report by Sam Gibbs
In other House events we competed in the Cricket competition, for the third year
in a row against Marsden who beat us in one day – enough said there. In the lunchtime
House Touch competition we made the semis and lost to St. Johns in a
very tense match however we didn’t have luck on our side that day. Furthermore,
the House Tennis final would have to be the major achievement in the House so
far. We made the final for the first time in a long time, rumored to be the first time
ever, which is highly impressive. I played 6 th seed and was pleased to be part of a
great team.
In addition to all the House Sport the boys and I put on a dinner for the School
House Girls and it was a very enjoyably evening. Some may have doubted our
cooking ability but we certainly were able to demonstrate our barbeque skills in
cooking the food. It was a great evening and I know the girls had an enjoyable
time. We found it a good way of integrating the new girls and getting to know them
better.
To conclude, it only seems appropriate to thank the boys for a great term. As you
read the Red Baron you certainly see the great things that happen within the
House and it certainly has shown through the attitude and positive demeanor
within the House.
The Chapel by Denis McLay
Community Service in School House is
seeing a considerable influx of numbers
with Duke of Edinburgh being made compulsory
for Year 10s. The 10 dorm this
year have all been doing daycare center
where they interact with young children. It
is a community service where they gain
valuable experience in coordinating activities
and communicating with persons
younger than themselves. This working
together in a community project also
strengthens the bonds between the boys.
Olliver Treacy surveys the track
before the 100M final.
Reading in schools has been popular with older students during their study periods.
Notable people who were involved in reading in schools were Sam and Matt Gibbs,
Harrison Mataele, Mark Chapman, Hao Chen and Antony Quirk
We are seeing the progression of the Chapel Close nearing the middle stages and we
await eagerly the completion of the project. The Chapel Close will offer many opportunities
for School House only services.
The first years are looking forward to starting community service in Term 2.
Overall there has been a great involvement with the Chapel and Community service
within School House. We are looking forward to the opportunities that unfold as the
year continues.

House Swimming by Harry Gower
House swimming for 2011 showed that regardless of success or otherwise, School
House still has the most fun. Last place in the pool certainly doesn’t reflect our attitude
and energy on the day. Though a prize for the loudest and most spirited house wasn’t
awarded this year, it is certain we would have retained it from 2010.
Even though swimming is not our strongest sport, we still saw plenty of red caps in the
final events, claiming some respectable places.
The Standout Swimmers were:
Tom Murray with 5th in senior 50m freestyle and 7th in 100m freestyle.
Marzellus Salaivao with 6th in Junior 50m butterfly and 8th in 50m freestyle.
Betty Magee with 2nd in girls 50m freestyle, 4th in 50m backstroke and 6th in 100m
medley.
Sean Glasgow with 4th in intermediate 50m freestyle and 6th in 50m butterfly.
Athletics by Jack Hailstone
This year the School House Boys and Girls proved to themselves they had huge
courage and could give it everything, despite the difficulties and array of injuries
and setbacks we had to overcome. Some very talented athletes within the house
put on a fine display for the red crowd and made a point to the rest of the school as
we tore up the athletics track. I can genuinely say the status of our house was lifted
up there with the best on the finals day, and only hard work and hearty determination
from the team to thank for it.
The overall results at the close of the finals day saw the School House members
happy and even somewhat surprised at out 6 th place, despite the low numbers and
the extra amount of running the lads had to do, but definitely not bad. As well as
the gutsy endeavor from the majority of the house there were some standout athletes
and several finalist winners.
Juniors; Daniel Easton, was very impressive with 2nd place in the 400m in 1m
1.79s and 2nd in the long jump with 4.69m. George Hailstone delivered well and
was 3rd equal in the triple jump with a distance of 9.07m. A special recognition to
Marzellus Salaivao as a distinctive crowd pleaser on the day, he was spectacular
to watch as he took out four events and the Junior Championship title with fine
grace and touches of pure class. 1st in 100m with 11.91s, 1st in 200m with 24.86s,
1st in 80m hurdles with 12.09s and 1st in the shot put with a throw of 10.58m. The
School House junior 8x100m relay team, were also exceptional, finishing closely
for 2nd Type to enter text
place.
From the intermediates; Chad Crossley was rewarded for his own efforts with 2 nd
in the 100m and 200m with times of 12.20 and 25.50s respectively. James Hay
fiercely competed the open pole vault event coming in at 3 rd place. Anthony Quirk
used his strengths well and finished 4 th in the High jump with at a height of 1.55m.
The School House girls were once again impressive and their own efforts were key
to the success of the day and much appreciated. Standouts were Laura Anderson
with a throw of 24.05m, winning the javelin, and Rosemary Horrocks with 3 rd
place in the javelin, throwing 17.88m. Jenny Medary also excelled on the day with
4 th in the 400m in 1m 11.49s and 4 th in the 100m hurdles at 21.63s.
Marzellus on his way to
winning the Junior hurdles

Red Baron Term 1 2011
Athletics by Jack Hailstone
Seniors; Harison Mataele courageously placed 2 nd in the high jump with an outstanding
jump of 1.68m and again 2 nd in the javelin, throwing 41.3m. Harison was
also 5 th in the 110m hurdles, running a time of 18.58s. Thomas Murray threw everything
he could at the 1500m, coming away with a highly regarded 3 rd place in 4m
38.7s against some talented opposition, also 4 th in the 400m at 56.15s and 5 th in
the 3km with 10m 33.66s. Barnaby Abdale-Weir put on a fine display of his talent
in the javelin event throwing 49.45m to put him in 4 th place. Further recognition is
deserved by close finishing athletes, Mark Chapman, 5 th in the 800m with 2m
22.57s, and Marcel Renata, placing 5 th in the discus at 30.18m.
I think we showed a lot of people, including ourselves, that the spirit and unity
within School House is strong and we’ve got what it takes to reach plenty of success.
Once again well done to all the achievers and a big thanks to all the boys,
and the very supportive team of School House girls, for all your effort put in.

Though it was a rainy day, this year orienteering
was fun as always.
In Senior team we have Denis McLay
started off first, finished in 54minutes
claiming that he “went too far” and ran
out of the area. Chris Pang ran for the
House second time, improved from 40
minutes to 35 minutes, while Raymond
Khau finished in 26 minutes, the best
result in the house, and well done on
getting top 15 in senior house.
Red Baron Term 1 2011
House Orienteering by Christopher Pang
Harry Wong at Swimming Sports
In Intermediate team, we have James Wong, who could have done better, but because
he stamped the stamp on the map instead of the boxes provided, he earned himself 15
penalties and getting overall time of 122 minutes, hope he will never make the same
mistake again, but good effort though. Veteran Alastair Sheard, finished in 35 minutes
with 2 penalties, which means he could get under 26 minutes within the top runners,
how unlucky. Matt Gibbs finished in 32 minutes, also well done.
James Witters and Sebastian Steinnger first time doing orienteering, not bad for their
first time, finished in 30 minutes and 42 minutes respectively, good job. Congrats on
Marzellus Salaivao excellent result, finished in 26 minutes, gaining 5th in junior house.
Also congrats to all the Juniors, coming 3rd overall in junior team and gaining House
colours
Overall we came 6th,though all of us have tried out best, we hope for better results next
year.
Tennis Report by Thomas Murray
It is safe to say that the School House tennis team for 2011 were the underdogs of the
competition. With only 3 of the 7 players being actual tennis players we did not look to
have a very good chance. The team consisted of Thomas Murray, Barnaby Abdale-
Weir, Mark Chapman, Simon Crotty, Harry Wong, George Koreman and Sam
Gibbs. However it turned out to be the complete opposite of how our season was expected
to turn out.
Up against St Johns first in windy and bright weather, the School House team dominated,
winning 8 out of 9 matches. The highlight of the day was Thomas and
Barnaby’s Comeback Tie-Break win against the St Johns number 1 and 2 seed doubles.
This win sent the boys through to the semis.
Our next opponents were Mr Syms Selwyn boys. This too ended in a 7-0 upset with 2
games not played. Highlight for this clash was Mark Chapman’s #4 singles match
which ended with him being victorious in another comeback tie-break win. Mr Syms did
not take his loss lightly and was weeping for many days after the encounter.
After two days of tennis in a row the boys were all knackered but keen to play Marsden
in the final. Marsden were always going to be hard opponents with their top 3 players in
the School Senior 1 tennis team. However the spirit and support was high for the
troops as they begun their battle. Unfortunately the whitewash was against us with the
overall tally ending up at 7-0 with 2 matches not needing to be played. However it must
be mentioned that by making the final, the lads made history, as School House has
never been in the inter-house tennis finals before. This resulted in pizza and colours for
all the boys.

One Tree Hill Run by Thomas Murray
Top 3: Rafy Shasha, Tom Murray and Tom Loseby.
On Sunday 3rd of April 2011 at 8:05am, 52 boys in red lined up at the King’s College
triangle awaiting the start of their 10 kilometre trek to the top of the hill in the far, far, far
distance. With the 5th years eager to make history and the 2nd years backed by Mr
Carrington ready to break the 5th years winning streak, the day was sure to be a
goody.
With the usual sprint to the school gates taking place the race to the hill was started.
Once again the Mangere Road lights proved costly, as Thomas Murray “Jay walked”
against orders and was the only runner to make it across the lights and continue his
run whilst the other 51 boys were forced to wait for the green man to flash himself,
other then a few naughty 5th years who had the perseverance, determination and
sidestepping skills to not stop until their journey was complete.
10km later Thomas Murray (Y13) made his way up the side of One Tree Hill to finish
his race in first place with a time of 43 minutes flat. Not too much later Rafy Shasha
(Y12) finished his well run race in a time of 50min 12 secs, closely followed by dormmate
Tom Loseby with a time of 50min and 37secs.
With much surprise to the spectators and teachers, Sam Tietjen (Y13), James Witters
(Y9) and Elliot Graham (Y13) were clambering over the last stile to get to the brick
wall with times of 54-Sam, 54.06-James and 54.31-Elliot which were great efforts.
With only 6 minutes left to get times under an hour to receive House colours, William
Cook (Y10), Simon Crotty (Y10), Harry Gower (Y13), Kai Peter (Y11), Connor Tottle
(Y11) and Matt Gibbs (Y12) managed to scramble up the mountainside just under
time with only minutes and seconds to spare.
With 4 year 13’s, 3 year 12’s and 2 year 9’s and 10’s making it in under an hour the
dorm competition was looking tight with the year 13’s nudging ahead. Over the next 37
minutes, 40 more boys walked, ran, tackled and hobbled up the mountain side to finish
their 10km trek and receive their Chocó bar, juice box and well earned rest.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
One Tree Hill Run by Thomas Murray
With everybody finished it was time to calculate the dorm averages. As the year 13 and
10’s awaited anxiously, the times were added and divided with the results being as followed:
75.26, 74.66, 72.16, 72.14 and 66.6. The placements were; in 5th place=1st
years, 4th place=4th years, 3rd place=2nd years, 2nd place=3rd years and for a history
making 3rd consecutive year in a row the 5th years were victorious by a whopping 6
minutes with the prize once again being free pizza and their names down in the school
house history books!!
It must also be noted that Mr Stewart was the only staff member to run the race and
finished in a blistering time of 64 minutes and 35 seconds which unfortunately was not
quick enough for House colours but to make matters worst for him, was also 1 minute
and 30 seconds slower then his main competitor Kurt Barker in which a bet was held
between them resulting in Mr Stewart cooking Kurt a home made, stone cooked pizza
for dinner.
A big thank you must go to Mr Carrington, Mr Oliver, Mr Stewart, Matron and the
non-competing boys for taking their time to organise the run and stand as lookouts
along the route, as well as all the parents, siblings and grand-parents who came along
to support their grandson, son or brother run in the event. Congratulations must go to
the Year 13 dorm for winning the dorm competition and all the boys in general for finishing
the run.
Winners of each dorm were:
1st years: James Witters (54min 06 secs)
2nd years: Simon Crotty & William Cook (55min 05 secs)
3rd years: Kai Peter (60min 25 secs)
4th years: Rafy Shasha (50 min 12 secs)
5th years: Thomas Murray (43 min 00secs)
Tom Loseby’s final dive to finish

Red Baron Term 1 2011
Second Year Dorm Report by Johann Steininger and Harry Wong
James Yang (MAMA) . Yang has fit
right in this term, after his quiet start
when he entered School house in
the middle of last year. However,
unluckily he managed to seriously
injure his foot, which resulted in
crutches. As time elapsed he learnt
to take advantage of this technique
and had a team of personal slaves
to get his dinner and his shoes then
further to put things away for him .
As being out for sport he climbed
his way through the academic rankings
of A5 and decided to make a
wise investment of increasing his
marks .
Resident Chef, Barney Abdale Weir.
Phantorn Chaikwang (Poon) Poon is very quiet . He keeps to himself a lot until the
occasion when he gets the opportunity to say ‘Wat duh’ . He is a good tennis player
and has improved his english skills a lot and demonstrated this by moving up to A3 .
Kasidit Chongsuttanamanee (Kassey) Kassey searched the land far and wide , cutting
down trees and making all sorts of survival essentials to make his way through
the night ... In Minecraft (A game) . As unfortunate as Kasidit is he always gets caught
do something illegal and addictive in week days for School house - GAMING . However
Kasidit still takes part in the external tennis team system. Academically Kasidit
has been stepping up his ‘game’ in 10 A5 and has dramatically improved.
William Cook (Cookie) Cookie brings brains and pure effort in his academics to the
dorm . As well as an outstanding student he also brings the heat within a large variety
of sports . His large list of specialities consist of cricket , tennis, running and soccer .
Considering the legit good stereotyped student he’s the perfect example . Always arrives
at prep early to stretch the extra mile, even working or reading ahead during
lunch time. Although Cook may seem to focus on school work, he is still currently
working his magic, texting with his girl Gemma.
Simon Crotty . Simon is always a good joke to have in the dorm. Despite gaining
great marks in 10R, Simon is also a sporting demon, being in Int Tennis1 and also being
a probable 7A player next term. Simon also completed the One Tree hill Run in a
startling 55 minutes and 5 seconds tied with Cook in a joint 1st place finish for the
dorm. He is also clocking up the hours on community service at Treehouse.
Ice Damapong . (Rice) Ice is a cheeky yet hilarious member of the dorm. A noticeable
aspect of ice is that he loves burnt toast and rice . He always contributes the hilarious
comment at the end of something casual . He makes sport fun when he mocks
many famous players . Mister Ice is pro at running and has the funniest jokes.

Second Year Dorm Report by Johann Steininger and Harry Wong
Harry Wong . (Wong) Wong also
played in the House tennis team
with Simon as his doubles partner
, It worked as a great combo . He
is great at table tennis and contributes
smart logical thoughts to
bad calls on fully random out of
the blue unnecessary statements .
However when it comes do Harry’s
academics he is determined to do
his best, and when there is a test
coming up he’ll be finding time to
revise, this shown in his results in
10R. His favourite teacher is Miss
Meng .
Charles Benedek-Rooney
(Rooney) Charles keeps to himself
in his room (which rowers
do) which he loves and cherishes
. He is a most valued member of
the rowing team and made
amazing achievements at the
Maadi cup rowing competition .
Beneficially for both our dorm
and Charles he has his own
room, so when he wakes up at
some early time in the morning,
whenever rowers do. He does
not wake up the whole dorm with
his alarm or snoring. Nonetheless
Charles is still a great addition
to the our dorm, and does
extremely well in class, shown by
his promotion from A3 to A2.
Barnaby Adbale-Weir demonstrates his powerful
forehand against Selwyn
George Koreman at the house tennis finals.
William Eddowes (Eddowez) Eddowez’s
soccer/rugby/golf/cricket/basketball/tennis/lacrosse/swimming/American football/horse
riding/surfing/F1/baseball/Wing Chan and stalking Ice’s family have kept him quite
busy during this long term. However, he has also performed well in 10R and also in his
own weekend sports with cricket 5A1. He is an active member of the dorm despite his
hobbies and his bright and cheery moods keep everyone happy. He is also a member
of college groups, such as the chapel choir.
George Hailstone (Price) Hailstone got his nickname from a failed attempt from
somebody to write and spell ‘Prince’. After this, his nickname has been Price. This term
has been quite successful for young Hailstone, after being moved up from A3 to A2 his
results have been great still. He is also an active tennis player. He has also been a
member of Kapahaka who have performed well in Polyfest recently.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
Second Year Dorm Report by Johann Steininger and Harry Wong
Jono-Amelia Sheffield-Kemp (RL, Hemp) Jono has done well this term in cricket
and class, improving on his results from last year. He is also captain of the 5A2 cricket
team, this was a success because of the massive competition going for the role.
However, after injuring himself, he could not fulfil his role. He is looking forward to the
soccer terms ahead after his arm recovers. He has been going to treehouse for community
service.
Ben Levene (Blav, Blavin, PF) B Lavin is a well-respected member of the dorm, and
has been a great and devoted member and captain Intermediate 7. However, he is
very much looking forward to showing off his soccer skills in next terms sports. His results
in A2 have been good too. In the dorm Ben is friendly with most and friendly in
the dorm.
Tom Mulholland (Gazelle, New RL) Tom has again leaped through the term, like a
Gazelle, but this time, he has been a member of the Kapahaka group, who did extremely
well at Polyfest, as well as playing and practicing his guitar frequently in the
term. His fantastic results in 10A4, as well as his outstanding gym work throughout
the term have resulted in a great term for him.
James Shera (Bulkscat) James Shera has had a ‘solid’ term after playing tennis and
performing well in A3. His prize tennis skills have shone through in internal tennis. He
also ran well in One Tree hill getting under 75 minutes. He was also a participant in
the Junior House relay team who managed a sound 2nd on Athletics day.
Johaan-not Amelia Sheffield-Steininger (First – year) The only first year in our
2nd year dorm has been gaming through most of the term, his immense hacking and
theft skills are a skill most people endeavour, however no one can match them. His
random phone calls while in the supermarket from JW are also quite funny. His barefoot
trips while pouring with rain to Sylvia Park attract comments from the entire dorm
too. Despite all this, his marks in A4 have been good as well as his social tennis on afternoons.
Red Baron Term 1 2011
Third Year Dorm Report by Kai Peter and Sean Glasgow
Kurt Barker- Kurt has had a good
start to the year, he beat Mr. Stewart
in the One Tree Hill run. And got a
choice as pizza. Algud G Cuz.
Sean Glasgow- Is a great guy. After
suffering a blow in the middle of the
term, Sean has come back to his
usual self. He has progressed in his
swimming, joining the Papatoetoe
Swimming Club, which has a gruelling
training regime. He also represented
the House in several Swimming
events.
Guy Wayne supporting house athletics
James Hay- James is ultra cute. He has had a good start to the year, and achieved
great results in the Pole Vault, and 400m events on Athletics Day. He is also playing
Bass Guitar in Small House and is improving rapidly. James also randomly represented
the House in House Archery.
John Lowe- John has had a good term to start the year. He received an A in Geography,
which is hard to get. John has been playing squash and has improved a lot but still
isn’t good enough to beat Kurt. He has also been going to the gym and can bench
press 10.0 kg now. John did Javelin and Discus for Athletics. He’s pretty bulky (jokes),
no surprises there. John was unfortunate enough to have been put rooming with
Hamish Witters, gutted. Jorge Wright is a follower. John has got battle scars from ripping
horns off herds of ibex.
George Koreman- George is the newest member to the Year 11 dorm and has settled
in exceptionally well. He represented the House in Senior Tennis, and also many events
in Athletics.
Henry Mannering- Henry has been selected as Captain of the Kiwi Under 19 Croquet
Team. He has also been selected to travel down to the South Island and represent
King’s in the sport of Clay Target Missing. Henry did a lot of work on the Red Baron
Trolley
Herc Noble- This term has kicked off very well for Herc in football terms. He has gotten
through to the first XI football team over the past 9 weeks of trialling and training and is
very proud of this achievement. He is doing well in class and his effort grades this term
were good picking up all B’s except for one C .His favourite class is art in which he got
a merit 5. This is a very good mark. Jozef will probably take his starting position on the
left wing (gutted Herc).
Kai Peter- Kai has had an interesting first experience at King’s. He has adapted well
and is well into his studies and sports. He did exceptionally well in the One Tree Hill
run, gaining colours for a time of 60 minutes, and coming first in the dorm.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
Third Year Dorm Report by Kai Peter and Sean Glasgow
Connor Tottle- Connor has had a swell term, focusing on getting into the Senior A soc
-cer team. Lately he has been getting into his Star Wars and Pokemon, with the hopes
of dropping out of school in the near future to pursue a career in Pokemon Training.
Jozef is better than Tottle in both Star Wars and Pokemon.
Ash Wilson- Ash Wilson is an amazing windsurfer . He has had a great term, getting
into his windsurfing every Tuesday and Thursday, he also represented the House in
the Inter House Sailing competition with Henry. He has also been competing in National
Competitions in which he is commonly placed in the Top Three.
Matt Wilson- Matt has had a good start to the year in his studies and sports. In the
summer he played cricket and hopes in the winter to get in to a good squash team
and the second XI hockey team. He is proud of his One Tree Hill run time, smashing
his last year’s time by 15 minutes, coming 2 minutes off getting colours with a time of
63 minutes.
Hamish Witters- Has had an amazing term, his only set back was having to room
with John Lowe. He has been playing a lot of lacrosse and is excelling in this sport, he
has been scouted in the last term by -5 different NCAA division 1 colleges and has
turned them down to continue his education at King’s. He has been going to the gym
and is skinny. Hamish is recovering from a foot injury from brawling with a Chihuahua.
James Wong- James has started the year on a successful note. In school he is a
member of the Concert Band, Senior Debating Team, and Gym. He also participated
in Summer Swimming and represented the House. At the House he is hardworking,
always helping people with their prep. Next term he will also sing in Small House and
speak third speaker in the House debating team.
Jozef Wright- Jozef has had a great term. He is a Senior member of the King’s long
distance running squad and his hoping to soon beat his 10K personal best of 13
months and 24 seconds. He is hoping to put these fitness skills into use in his second
season of playing for the left wing in the 1st XI. Jozefs dream job is to drop out of
school and join the Legion of Jedi Warriors where he will harness the force oh yeah
and his grades, sport and cultural stuff is pretty mean too.
The years 12 and 13 dinner with the Girls in the front common room.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
Fourth Year Dorm Report by Thomas Loseby and Xavier Field
Pawan Chaikwang: Pawan has
started the new year strongly, focusing
on his academic studies.
However, he also played tennis for
Intermediate 7 and was involved in
‘Reading in Schools’ for his community
service.
Mark Chapman: This term Mark
has enjoyed great success playing
1st XI cricket for the college. Despite
his large commitment to college
cricket, Mark also partook in
community service and a number of
House events. Currently Mark is in
Dubai playing cricket for the Hong
Kong Cricket Club in the 2nd Division
ICC World Cup.
Mark Chapman wins Man of the Match playing
for Hong Kong in April
Hao Chen: This term Hao has put a sizeable focus on his major sport, basketball; as
well as trialling for the 1st V Basketball team, which he was in last year, Hao is also
coaching the Under 15 basketball team along with Ash Franks. This dedication to basketball
has not deterred Hao from his academic studies, and he also was involved with
‘Reading in Schools’.
Chad Crossley: Once again Chad has lived up to his reputation in athletics; and
when it came time for inter-house athletics Chad achieved 3rd in 100 metre and 200
Xavier Field: This term Xavier was rewarded for his tireless effort towards the academic
side of his college life; and achieved academic half colours. In addition to this,
the other aspects of the college were not forgotten as Xavier was involved with the
3A1 cricket team and he also participated in the ‘Reading in Schools’ programme offered
for community service.
Ash Franks: Starting a new year has brought a spark to the academic side of Ash’s
repertoire, and he was often to be found taking a multitude of photos for one of his
most enjoyed subjects, photography. In addition to his studies Ash also put a large
portion of his time into college basketball, coaching the Under 15 team with Hao
Chen, and also trialling for the 1st V team. Furthermore, Ash also participated in
community service.
Matthew Gibbs: Last year, Matt accumulated the highest amount of credits for level 1
NCEA and this term he has showed no slowing down; spending a large fraction of his
time on his studies. Additionally, Matt has had success with his sport; competing with
the 1st V shooting team. At the moment Matt is trailing for the 2nd XV rugby squad.
He is also involved in community service doing ‘Reading in Schools’.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
Fourth Year Dorm Report by Thomas Loseby and Xavier Field
Kahu Ingram: Once again, this term Kahu has gotten involved with all aspects of college
life, focusing on his academic work but also finding time to participate in the Kapa
Haka group with Harison Mataele, and perform community service for the college. In
addition to this Kahu has been trialling for the 1st XV rugby squad and made the tour
team to the Gold Coast defeating several top Queensland schools.
Samuel Levene: Despite having the best part of this first term disrupted by his torn
labrum and the consequential surgery on his shoulder which left him in a sling for the
majority of this term and unable to participate in any sport, Sam has showed great
moral integrity and inner strength to remain at school and persevere with his academic
studies.
Ash Franks, Rafy Shasha, Alastair Sheard and Matt Gibbs enjoying the Year 12
and 13 Girls Dinner.
Tom Loseby: This term Tom has thoroughly enjoyed the switch from history to classics,
much to Mr. Stewart’s disgust. Also Tom was a vital member of the Senior 6 tennis
team, and participated in the ‘Otahuhu Homework Programme’. At present time
Tom is trialling for the 2nd XI football squad.
Harison Mataele: For the start of this year Harison launched back into his sport with
rigorous enthusiasm. He provided crucial points for the house in inter-house athletics
achieving 2nd in both javelin and high jump events. Furthermore Harison is trialling
not only for the 1st XV rugby squad but also the 1st V basketball team. Harison also
featured in the Kapa Haka along with Kahu Ingram, and ‘Reading in Schools’ was his
community service.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
Fourth Year Dorm Report by Thomas Loseby and Xavier Field
his community service. Ardy is a good member of the dorm and has enjoyed a great
start to the year.
Antony Quirk: Antony has gotten involved with all aspects of school life in the start of
this term. Along with trialling for the 2nd XV rugby team and being a prominent member
of many house teams, most notably coming 4th in intermediate high jump in interhouse
athletics, Antony has also been a component of the college Jazz band and furthermore
participated in ‘Reading in schools’ for his community service.
Rafy Shasha: Rafy has had a good term overall, as per usual he has had a good run
with his grades especially in Biology with a grade of 90. He has trialled and is now a
member of the 1st XI football and has recent played in their promotion – relegation fixtures.
He has also taken part in ‘Reading in Schools’ for community service.
play sports this term he plans to play squash in the winter, which he also did last year.
In the way of academia, Guy thoroughly enjoyed the subject’s history and divinity and
looks forward to purchasing a van.
Fourth years finishing the One Tree Hill Run

Red Baron Term 1 2011
The Red Baron by Taylor Zhou
Last year King’s College
School House placed an application
for the third Red
Bull Trolley Grand Prix and
was astound when our design
was one of only 100
designs chosen from over
2000 applications throughout
New Zealand. We were astonished
to finish in 35 th
place out of all 84 competitors
present. Over 100,000
people raced to the event,
which was held at Auckland
Domain where Lower Domain
Drive was transformed
into a 700m-race track complete
with numerous tight
bends. Furthermore, we
were one of only two underage
teams competing in this
event.
The design of our trolley was a replica of the famous German biplane flown by Manfred
Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, known as the Red Baron, in the World War I.
After six weeks of planning and constructing we had achieved what some say was
impossible due to our skill and time constraints.
The team consisted of Sam Gibbs (Pilot), Taylor Zhou, Sam Tietjen and Henry
Mannering who had spent many hours in the top secret King’s Technology Centre.
We would like to greatly thank Mr. Mann and Mr. Oliver for giving up many hours of
their own time in supervising and aiding the team with throughout the six-week period
while sharing their expertise with us. I am sure we have got a large bill ahead of us.
We also thank Harry Gower, Marcel Renata, Barnaby Abdale-Weir and Anthony
Quirk for supporting the team through the construction period.
We would like to thank Mr. Burns for financially supporting the project and Mr. Dyer
for giving us the opportunity to participate in what was truly a staggering event.
Our trolley consisted a four-wheel steel chassis with a rack and pinion steering system.
Additional wood framing was added to support the PVC sheet body throughout
the trolley. A new braking system was added in hope to provide further braking power
as additional weight has been added. The trolley was finished in a red (a tribute to
the original Red Baron and School House, obviously) and finishing touches include a
wooden propeller, a custom made Iron Cross with ‘School House Red Baron’, a
matching helmet and a series of King’s College and School House crests.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
The Red Baron by Taylor Zhou
A scrutineering day was held on Saturday, a day prior to the event, where the Red
Bull event organizers got a chance to meet the teams and pass through a thorough
check of wheels, steering, brakes and dimensions. Exceptionally happy to have
passed both brake and weight test (where we weighed at 78kg with the limit being
80kg) we took the opportunity to observe the other trolleys at the pit tent. The New
Zealand Air force’s “Ground Hawk”, Optimus Prime, and Decepticarts were one of
the many trolleys, which managed to gain our attention. The scruntineering day
concluded with a track walk through where, for the first time, we questioned our trolley’s
braking power.
Race day began at 7:30am where a short briefing of the day took place. Creative
judging soon got under way where the Red Bull girls along with New Zealand Drift
Champion Mike Whiddett judged the originality and creativity of each trolley. They
were impressed by our build quality and wished
Racing commenced at 12:00pm but the schedule was soon delayed by two hours
due to a vast number of crashes and the need to clear the track. Only two races
prior to ours, team Decepitcarts rolled and crashed at a speed of 70km/h resulting in
the copilot flying into the hay bales and the pilot severely injured. No pressure Sam.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
The Red Baron by Taylor Zhou
Our race commenced at 4:10pm, two hours behind schedule, where Taylor Zhou
began waving the trolley onto the starting line in proper aviation style. Our entry music
was “Top Gun Anthem”, a guitar instrumental by Steve Stevens to enhance the
aviation theme. The commentators commented on our “very professional looking job”
and how they expect “nothing less from youth workers”. Pushing the trolley on the
starting line was Taylor Zhou, Henry Mannering and Christopher Pang. On the
track Sam Gibbs completed a very tidy race while sporting a good racing line. Our
trolley got over the jump “so easy” while the commentators, targeting our age, described
Sam jumping “that teenage hurdle of puberty”. Surprisingly (and some were
disappointed) we completed the final hairpin with no drama. We were awarded a
6,7,6,8 and another 7 by the judges. Overall we are astonished with our performance
especially when we given the fact we not completed a down hill test run prior to the
event.
The Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix is not an annual event as the previous event happened
in 2005. However, I encourage School House and the School to get involved
in hope of build a trend and to represent the capabilities King’s on a different scale.
A big thanks to Red Bull New Zealand for hosting the event, the Technology Department,
Mr. Carrington, our Matron Mrs. Reed, the boys of School House, everybody
in the school community who has supported us and Amber Peebles (one of the
judges) who gave us an 8.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
From the Housemaster Ken Carrignton
Mr Carrington getting his money’s worth with a Kart ride.
It certainly has been an incredibly busy and long term. We have managed to fit in
House Picnic, Swimming Sports, Athletic Sports, Yr 9 trip to Mannering’s farm, two
Sunday Chapel Services, Dinner in the House with School House girls - 51 in total,
Red Bull Trolley Derby, senior House Cricket & Tennis and Touch Rugby. I will have
undoubtedly missed numerous other activities. As well as these, our boys have also
been involved in their own individual cultural, sports, and Community Service activities.
We have also had seven boys from Christ College staying with us at various
stages over the term, one of whom, Tom Bostok, from the Hawkes Bay, has decided to
remain with us permanently.
The boys do lead busy lives. Cultural practices such as Orchestra and Jazz Band occur
mostly before school while Kapahaka practises, in the early evening after normal
sports practice time. The KIng’s Kapahaka Group, with eight School House boys,
came second in their division in the Auckland Polynesian festival recently. Our School
House members of the Kapahaka group are; Marcel Renata, Jack Hailstone, Thomas
Murray, Harison Mataele, Kahu Ingram, Kurt Barker, George Hailstone, and Tom Mulholland.
Community Service activities are available during some study periods for seniors as
well after school for them as well as juniors - years 9-11. Seniors go to local primary
schools to assist with their Reading programmes as well as manning the Help desk at
Middlemore Hospital in the evenings.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
From the Housemaster Ken Carrington
After school Community Service activities are; Retirement Home visiting, Refugee
Visiting, I.H.C Home visiting, helping at Day Care centres, assisting with special
olympics athletes at the school track and also the Kidz First Hospital at Middlemore.
As well as this there are many opportunities to get involved collecting for various
charities. Our Year 10s have had plenty of opportunities to get their hours up for
their Duke of Edinburgh qualification, depending on their other summer commitments.
It is pleasing to see that all of the boys have taken part but special mention
must be made of James Shera, Johann Steininger, Benjamin Levene and Kasidit
Chongsuttanamanee.
Debaters compete in the inter-school competitions in the evenings. As well as these
we have the Film Club and Theatre Club that also take groups out in the evenings.
Mark Chapman our sole representative in the very successful 1st XI spent the last
2 weeks of term playing for the Hong Kong Senior Representative Team in an International
tournament in Dubai! Hong Kong finished 4th in the tournament with
Mark contributing with some fine performances with the bat.
Marzellus Salaivao our Junior Athletic Champion competed at Central Zone and
convincingly won the Junior Hurdles and unfortunately pulled a hamstring while
leading in the 100m and still hung on to win in an impressive 11.71 secs!
The King’s Football squad prepared for important promotion - relegation preseason
matches, mostly in the dark before school, as well as with games on Sundays. We
have Elliot Graham, Rafy Shasha and Herc Noble in the squad. Unfortunately the
XI were unable to cement their spot in the premier league for 2011.
The Ist XV squad, toured Australia, successfully, with three School House boys in
the squad; Barnaby Abdale-Weir, Marcel Renata and Kahu Ingram. Barnaby was
selected for a Blues U17 Development squad camp held over the holidays.
Our Tennis players in first teams this summer were Thomas Murray in Senior 1 and
in Intermediate 1 Simon Crotty and Harry Wong once he recovered from injury.
Charles Benedek Rooney had a great rowing season at the North Islands and
Maadi. Charles is our sole rower in the House and we should have more boys involved
in this sport.
House Music is on the horizon next term and we have had auditions for our small
House group. That will be the next major House focus. The Small House competition
will be held on Friday 13th in the great Hall. This is a student only event due to
space restrictions, however the winner does perform at the Big House competition
on Friday 20th at the Telstra Events Stadium at Manukau. This a very popular evening
and tickets will be in demand.
We have also had a small team building our downhill trolley racer with tutors Mark
Oliver, Dan Dyer and year 13 Taylor Zhou. We are appreciative for the help from
the Development Office and Richard Burns in helping with the initial purchase of
the trolley.

Red Baron Term 1 2011
From the Housemaster Ken Carrington
The School House Red Baron trolley piloted by Head of House Sam Gibbs came
36th on the day in front of a large crowd with several spectacular crashes before
our run adding to the tension. Apparently one of the judges, Amber Pebbles often
on the social pages, awarded the team 8/10!
The dinner hosted by the Yr 13s for our Year 12s and School House Girls was a
real success. It was enjoyed by all and gave all an opportunity to meet and socialise
in a different setting.
Open Day -School House Saturday 14th May Drinks 4.30-6.00pm
Kings College 1st XV v Sacred Heart 1st XV for the Fitzpatrick-KIrkpatrick Trophy
Parents and families are cordially invited to call in to School House at some stage
on Saturday 14th May. This should be the beginning of all the grade Soccer and
Rugby competition matches and the 1st XV match starting at 2.30pm. The 1st XI
match has yet to be confirmed, however they usually start at 12.30pm.
We will have tea and coffee available throughout the morning and following the
XV match all are welcome back to the House for our own after-match function.
I have really enjoyed the very busy term and I thank the boys of School House for
their good humour, demeanour and positive attitude. Sam Gibbs and his prefect
team have been efficient and effective and have contributed significantly to the
overall tone of the House. A huge thank you to our House staff, Matron Gill and
Tutors Mike, Dan, Mark and Richard all of whom spend many hours in the House
and to my patient and supportive wife Rosemary.
I hope that you have had an enjoyable Easter break with your families.
