THE ROLE OF THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE<br />

The Chief Executive is responsible for setting and delivering the overall <strong>Stonewall</strong> strategy,<br />

developing and nurturing external relationships, influencing our stakeholders and directing the<br />

activities of the management team. The role requires a detailed understanding of and empathy<br />

with <strong>Stonewall</strong>’s objectives, a passion for and proven adeptness at leading social change and<br />

tackling structural inequalities, and an ability to campaign effectively on the national and<br />

international stage.<br />

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:<br />

• Representing <strong>Stonewall</strong> externally and campaigning for social change by influencing:<br />

• current and potential supporters, from individuals to large corporations<br />

• public sector organisations, across education, health, law enforcement and the<br />

judiciary<br />

• UK government and parliamentarians in Westminster, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast<br />

and local government<br />

• Traditional and social media – national, international and LGBT<br />

• Working with the Board of Trustees to set organisational strategy and leading the<br />

<strong>Stonewall</strong> team to deliver upon it<br />

• Building and managing an outstanding senior leadership team to enable <strong>Stonewall</strong>’s<br />

c150 FTE staff team across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to flourish<br />

and work effectively<br />

• Ensuring robust financial management and commercial and investment strategies that<br />

safeguard the organisation’s future are in place<br />

• Overseeing the evolution of service provision across the public, private and third<br />

sectors to further <strong>Stonewall</strong>’s social change mission<br />

• Leading the development and growth of <strong>Stonewall</strong>’s international work<br />

• Championing the organisation’s commitment to equality of opportunity in all that it<br />

does<br />

THE PERSON<br />

We are seeking an individual with experience of:<br />

• Leading an organisation or a directorate of comparable scale and complexity<br />

• Effectively collaborating with a board and leadership team to deliver social change<br />

• Powerful, credible influencing and campaigning skills that bring staff, activists, policymakers,<br />

corporates and institutions on a change journey<br />

• Media awareness and media management skills, with a sense of the opportunities and<br />

risks that come with leading a high-profile organisation<br />

• Commercial nous, with the ability to position <strong>Stonewall</strong> for funding from major donors<br />

and corporates<br />

• Ensuring impact capture is robust and measurable<br />

• Empathy with <strong>Stonewall</strong>’s aims and objectives, and a strong understanding of the<br />

current issues with regard to taking the agenda of <strong>Stonewall</strong> forward, including an<br />

awareness of racism as an issue and the experience of marginalised identities within<br />

LGBT communities<br />

• Resilience in the face of scrutiny combined with a generosity of spirit
